just to clear out a few camera terms..

Thanks esbe ! But I have no merit, I just pushed the button ! The Tosh pics were shot with a, probably older than I, Canon camera without flash. Sure doesn't get the resolution of today's digicams, but makes great pics !

fortunatelly when the early canon reflexes came out (the A-1 and following cameras) they had an excellent auto-focus. the A in the name stands for that.

also i got to say the picture quality in the old reflex cameras in general is ALLWAYS better than in any digicam - since before the invention of the image sensors - the light that reached the film - was DIRECT - so there is virtually no distorsion, - also this means "resolution" is a term u can only aply to digital cams.

only real grain amount in the image is set by the ISO number of the film.

i learnt fotografy with an A-1..

I agree the Canon A-series were built like tanks, but I always preferred Nikon, I had two secondhand F1s, a secondhand F4 and for a while a Canon AE-2, but the best camera I ever owned was the F4, wish they made high res digital backs for old Nikon cheap, as I'd go buy one right away. I don't like how automated and complicated modern cameras have become, I still like setting aperture and shutter speed manually when doing serious photography, something that was simple and intuitive with the old manual Nikons, still not seen a modern digital SLR that is as simple to use in this way. I had a few Russian Leica copies too, I used to carry one everywhere with me - nice and small, but not very light - solid metal, but I loved rangefinder cameras. Wonder what the latest Leica digicams are like?

yup, that is a Canon FT-QL

Built like tank indeed and of course super heavy ! the little guy went through a lot during my first Asia journey and although the lens started to move a bit on its axis after two month, it never failed ! I really like to shoot with this one.

the canon A-1 i had is aparantly from 1978

now adays i use a canon d-400 - but the feeling is never the same as with real film.

the taste for particular camera brands is highly personal we all have different eye - trigger finger and hand sizes - i loved the A1 mostly because it was the first "real" camera i travelled with. but i think honestly if we are talking about good cameras - nothing beats a hasselblad hehe but in the lack of humungus piles of dosh one goes for something more achievable hehe

at work i have the oportunity to take a lot of photos, and
i think the canon D400 i use a lot nowadays is very easy to use - and personally i only think its a bit small in size - but thats because my hands are fairly big - the solution is the extra battery pack that gives extra weigth and size. and honestly its a cheap cam - with a lot of possibilites - same goes with most other brands today - they are all pretty good and reliable. now the main difference lies in the optics used - so much difference in the range of lenses and etc - one can go crazy trying to get an allround kit of different lenses etc.. it all quickly orbits up in price.. its more like an ongoing project for an undefined time.

mriko - yeah man a book! - or atleast a article! been reading and checking ur pics for such a long time now - and if us old potheads and younger ones like it - im definetly sure the book would sell! go for it man!

For color accuracy consistency among different photos , I generally find the best way is to use the flash and have no other light sources .Then you only need to set the WB setting to Flash or Auto.. Do you happen to have any of these Golds shot under flash light and with properly setup WB Raco ? I would be really interested to see the true actual colors/gonden tint , cause correcting the WB afterwards on jpgs is not accurate by any means and the non-WBalanced pics dont allow the true colors show up..

personally i think going the complicated way is the best. in my photografy kit i got a sheet of white non-gloss paper. when ever im in a situacion where the camera has problems in its modes of white balance..

i just grab my white sheet - hold it up and take a pic of it - later i go into my camera and set it to use that photografy as the source of white balance information. its works like a charm.

sounds complicated - but with the D400 u do the whole process in 3-5 seconds.

most work in photoshop should be made in RAW format for best results. atleast for stills. IMHO

anyway - i can just ad that even night time pictures can be made holding the camera by hand - there is a lot of technique involved - not too different to that of shooting of rifles - breathing and the pulse is important to have in count.

i recently sold (!! ) several nightime pics i took under a semana santa procession, i didnt use flash or tripod - just iso 800 to 1000 and a very steady hand.

everything is possible. just BELIEVE in your self hehe

eheh, thanks bros, feels good to have such feedback ! I've already written some articles actually(Parvati and Kashmir), was for The Red Eye Express, but surely not my best articles as chief-redactor rewrote them a lot, especially the Kashmir one. But was nothing more than "stoner reading", just about 2 guys roaming the Himalayas for their first time eheh...

I'm in the position where I actually MUST write some new articles, which I should do for my next journey this coming fall (Should go through Kashmir, some "secret" Himachal valley and Northern Pakistan of course).

For the book, it is a pretty old project I'm still sticking to, but for now I don't have enough material for such a work. I need more pics of ripe plants in their homeland, pics of people harvesting, rubbing, sieving,pressing and I need to visit more countries as well (All the 'stan's, Iran, Xinjiang, Nepal, Sikkim, Bhutan, Altai area and so on). But that's life-time work for sure. I could try to publish something lighter, but needs at least to visit Afghanistan, Xinjiang and Nepal for that, plus a better coverage of Pakistan and Northern India.
Hopefully from Next January/February I'll go back every two months or so to Asia for business purposes, so that will be of some help to gather more material !

Here's some pics of the second generation of seeds from the Durban Poison I've been growing. This is some real DP here. She has poor yields unfortunately and needs some heavy training/topping or needs to be tree size to have good yields. Buds are also airy but nice and chunky. Any flaws in this strain, or at least this lot I'm growing, are blown out the water by the high. The high is truly trippy (well as trippy as ganja can be) and electric. No downer, really long souring sativa high. I haven’t yet come across anything that beats the high, happy weed to the maximum. I have also heard that the DP considered to be the best by long-time DP growers here in SA tends to be the small bud versions like these ones.

This second generation of seeds (second generation to me, most likely heavily inbred before) show very low vigour compared to last generation. I think making seeds with a male from the same seed line has pushed them too far, to the point of loosing vigour. I'm sure they have been inbred over the years in KZN where they're originally from and are now suffering from it. Now I'm waiting to find some fresh DP genes to introduce to the line. I have come across many different DP seeds from different locations but it's hard to find the really special ones.

Yes it yielded pretty nice ! Too bad it smoked like hemp, so I turned it all into bubble and oil . I hope you are more lucky than I was !!! I will try some more swazi plants when I have time to experiment though!
