Reverse Osmosis Filter Won't Stop Spewing From The Spout

Hey guys, i found a 5- stage RO Filter on craigslist for 50 bucks. its a 100 GPD but theres a problem with it. The owner says its "missing a spring inside which is suppose to make the water stop coming out the spout. the water keeps flowing through the spout without it." Did a quick google search and am wondering if its the Auto-shut off valve?

The thing is I plan to run my reverse osmosis filter straight into my hydro control reservoir which will have a float valve in it. I want too put a T on my washing machine cold water supply so I can run constant water to RO filter which automatically tops off my Control Res via float valve. Is it okay that an RO filter never shuts off and is continuously trying to push water out?? Can i just use my float falve to control On/Off of the RO filter??

The stealth 100 and 200 models have a shut off valve on the clean r/o output side, no valve on the input. Should work fine, though I prefer to top off manually once a day as it gives a larger pH swing. ;)

I have a 50 gallon, food-grade barrel I fill up and water from there. :D

I don't know much about RO filters, my dad has one for his aquarium but I don't usually ask too many questions when I go visit him.

One thing I recommend is checking out salt water related forums. Most people with reef tanks use RO/DI filters and have a ton of information.

the aso valve shuts off the brine waste when the permeate flow is shut down via a solenoid or what ever...

they are cheap as hell. i just saw one on amazon for like 10 bucks.

from what i understand, they are just a spring loaded shuttle/spool check valve... when permeate is flowing, it pushes permeate valve open which is coupled to the brine/waste line.

what has probably happened... is the permeate valve is stuck open without the spring to close it when flow is stopped. this means the brine is probably stuck open as well.

in other words, just get a new one.
