Respect, given or earned

Earning respect is a difficult term to define. The person who is earning the respect of others should not be actively trying to earn their respect because it seems like fakery. Others earn our respect through their innate behavior. If someone is a true blue friend and has your back they have earned your respect but have not actively sought it.
Does that make any sense, I'm a little high.
the biker saying "Respect is earned, never guaranteed" is accurate but does not imply that the earner is doing anything other than being themselves. The respect is not given automatically or perpetual. It's in the deeds done.

Of course now the choice is whose respect does one want. If I wanted the respect of a mass murderer would I go out and kill as many people as I could? If I were insane,yes.
So it seems respect is neutral and defined by the giver.

It's both given and earned.. Noone is above anyone else were all equal and deserve the same amount. Now if one chooses to disrespect then obviously its not not given back or at all.. And vice versa. Lots of people out in the world think that for some reason god created them a lil better than the next.. Therefore thinking people around he/she owe them respect before they themselves owe respect to others. If people just put others before themselves some of the time this world would be a more respectful place to live in.. Just my 2 pennies... peace..

man you expect respect because you ride a bike? i started riding enduros at age 5. i also am over 40 and southern. most bikers i meet and know would have nothing to do w/your attitude. it is the reason most folks still see bikers as low class hoods...now i happen to know better about bikers, but theres still a few dumbasses out there that lend to the old streotypes. thanks...not

Respect is hard to describe like "Love" is hard to prove or disprove. To me Respect is "felt" in my gut (brain) when i meet people. If i meet someone who is rude, and interrupt's people for example.. i simply dont talk to them. Not because of "non-respect" but due to the fact i hate to be interrupted while i am talking or responding to someone else. the person that interupts while someones else is talking, obviously doesn't care for the topic being discussed or the person talking..
Also,, i dont feel like anyone has a "set given" amount of respect from the begining of knowledge of another person. Meaning. I might meet someone who after only 1 minute of knowing them and think to myself, "wow this person has no humanity or respect for other humans". Then on the other hand after 1 minute of meeting someone i might think to myself "wow! this person deserves massive respect from me or from others".. so...
Also,, i think the aspect of "respect" is a inner greed gene. i.e. When people go to other peoples houses; and there is a rule that you are not to wear shoes into the house. Yet the person who thinks "what the fuck? who the fuck? why the fuck? cant i wear my shoes? Then proceeds to wear their shoes into the house anyway.. That is greed in my book, and a lack of human respect.
I might have a twisted view on this, but non the less a view
