And as far as non-english speaking immigrants living here, I don't see what the big deal is. Yes, it's annoying when they don't understand the national language, but they are productive members of society, and an asset as cheap labor. The government knows this and that's why they don't do much about them. Have you seen how many Mexicans work for the city? So what if your garbageman/lawn care guy can't speak english? They get the job done without 'dem fancy book learnin's, and without that American sense of entitlement.

And I'll be willing to bet that 95% of the "learn it or leave" crowd are people who only ever lived in one country and have never had to learn a new language to function in society. They don't know the pressure and general bullshit that comes with learning a new language. Expecting grown adults to learn a whole new language is ignorant to say the least. Their kids will probably pick it up since they're young, but with laguage, it's like the saying, "you can't teach an old dog new tricks."

Non english speaking Mexicans are far less a problem than non-working welfare leeches, crooked politicians, and the gouge-fest that plagues every aspect of our domesticated lives. They just want to live comfortable lives like we do. Is that so offensive? Not good enough for them dirty brownies maybe?

"American" doesn't mean anything since this is a country comprised of (you guessed it) IMMIGRANTS. Part of what makes this a great place to live IS diversity of people and cultures. Why not take your idea a step further, paint everyone white who isn't white already, give them a briefcase, and throw them into middle management or construction?

Every immigrant wave that comes in typically does not speak engish (well) in the first generation, but subsequent generations have no problem speaking english. I'm sure that people would have zero problems learning english if that were the only stipulation for being in this country.

I'm curious as to whether other countries print bilingual ballots and such? Does Mexico cater to english speakers? I know they do in tourista area's but what about everyday government?

Seems I remember there were some hot debates in Canada awhile back about half the country wanting french as their official language and winning but do they still teach english in schools? Also do you have to press 1 to get a voicemail menu in english?

It is interesting for me to watch Newt Gingrich because he is really not that great of a politician. It is not his fault because he tries very hard at it though. Now he is a decent politician but he is not in the league of a Bill Clinton. A little history, he went to war with Clinton as Speaker of the House in the mid 90’s over the government shut down. Clinton pretty much beat him pretty bad. Sort of like Michael Jordan in his prime playing a pick up game against a average division I college player.

Any way now forward to the present, I think Gengrich sees himself as some pragmatic American values unifier that can rescue America. But the truth is he is an average at best politician with a ton of baggage his opponents can disparage him with. Now I will say, I agree with his message that English is the language of prosperity but any politician worth his weight that is considering being president needs to avoid this issue. After all it is not 1994 anymore.
