Reparations anyone? Good? Bad? Who should / shouldn't get them. Why?

The history of the world has many instances of injustice. Many people think reparations might be a good way to correct past injustices.

Who owes? Who is owed? Is anyone owed? How should any reparations be paid?

i can't think of a more difficult method of attempting to atone for a nations past sins. that IS what "reparations" boil down to. do ALL people of color get a check? only those who descended from Sally & Thomas? :dunno: where in hell could you even pretend to draw that line? what about the folks who sold themselves as indentured servants and were frequently abused? or do they not count as "slaves" because of their skin color?:thinking:how could one prove in a court of law that they were descendants of slaves, who frequently had no last name? i don't see this as realistic.

Thank you. Whether someone thinks it’s right or wrong to give reparations to people now doesn’t matter. It’s physically impossible to do it in a fair and certain manner.

I have a black friend i went to high school with, a descendant of slaves, whos a financial adviser with charles schwab. He owns a 6 bedroom home in westlake hills austin, along with two other properties, and even he would get a check. You cant pick and choose favorites with a thing like that.

Half the country is Hispanic now. If you think it would piss off white tax payers just imagine how theyd feel.
Believe what you'd like, its a free country. But it sounds like a great way to start a race war to me

Yvette Carnell doesn't need to 'break down the debate', all she really needs to do is just stand there without even opening her mouth. 'nuff said! :shucks:

When making any claim for restitution, that's all any reparations are, the burden of proof of the harm should be on the person making the claim.

Within that claim, people should identify specific people and how they did the harm, not a generic, "you're white therefore you're automatically guilty of things people that might look like you, but aren't you, did two centuries ago".

So I'm opposed to blanket reparations based on race. That could even be a form of racism if instituted the way government might institute it, if the fuckers ever did. For example, affirmative action, being a racist policy is a kind of racist reparations policy already and has lead to unintended consequences as well as being fundamentally unfair to some individuals. I am opposed to people alive today being forced to pay for harms they didn't do. it's a policy that attempts to use racism to "cure the problems of racism". That mindset is fundamentally flawed.

Then again
In some instances, if there is documentation, it might be possible for a person to prove their ancestor had property stolen and if that property is identifiable and known to be held today by somebody wrongfully. it could be proven it should go the ancestor of the person it was stolen from. Civil court maybe?

Individual cases could be weaker or stronger depending on what info. is available. Obviously calling witnesses from the grave can't happen so an important piece, eye witness testimony, would be impossible. Again, the burden of proof is on the person bringing the claim. Being a specific race today is not evidence, people today of a different race harmed you, that's nonsense.

I think Politicians use blanket "reparations talk" as bait to gain votes.

I don't think any "reparations" for proven property harms done to your ancestors, as described above, should come from "government money" (the money government takes from the populace) it should come from the individuals that did the harm (all dead) or their heirs alive today who still hold the property.

The problem with that policy is government won't allow it, once they realize it opens the doors to other types of claims. like what about all the land from sea to shining sea and how that was taken etc.

Maybe we should just move on and stop whining about it like every other country with a history of slavery has?

....... just to get Black/Dem votes. Didn't work this time, nobody got 'nuffin, 'cept some 'activists' bought a few mansions. :shucks:

It does seem like some money went missing.
Don't hear much about that now.

Whatever happened to BLM and the fuzzy accounting for the donations they received?

some money lol about $8 million in the year 2021 alone to three greedy fatasses for mansions and luxury cars

I cant believe they're still operating. The Firemans Fund helped black people more than the BLM ever did

How is this executed? Who gets exactly how much? If your family came here in 1920 do you just get Jim Crow money? If you’re half white, what then?
