remote memory killer...sounds scary right

Erasing a hard drive doesn't actually get rid of anything. Download a restoration program and run it, you can recover pretty much anything you ever erased. Law enforcement has programs able to go a minimum of 8 levels of deleted files and recover it without any difficulty. I use a program called restoration.exe, it's free and effective.

Using a powerful electromagnet will permanently destroy the hard drive, but all of the information is still recoverable. The more you try to destroy the data, the harder the police will try to recover it.

Encryption is the most viable thing to protect your data from being discovered, it will take years to break a high level encryption code, and the key is protected by the 5th amendment if you memorize it (for now).

There is a company that makes a self destructing hard drive. It injects acid into the casing and dissolves the platters.

Yes, in Windows, "deleting" a file, that is certainly true. It doesn't delete anything. That is why if you are serious about police or any adversary recovering your data, you should use some sort of secure delete that will write the previous space used out with zeros and ones.

ok get some acaica bark, some lye and naptha, learn about extracting dmt leave the dmt desolved in the naptha and just wire a fuze in there with the manor mentioned about it will burn off fast and leave a room full of dmt vapor leaving anyone in the room tripping face for atleast 10 mins now that would be great

No shit!!
you guys are the real deal! ThCx!!! i am not really worried about it enough to take any of these steps... I was just thinking and here we are.. I am the cat and mouse type of sociopath....:dueling:

WTF you ARE a TRIP man...you would get flagged (prolly for something worse than growing ?) just for the acquisition of materials...

DoD writes the 0's, then they run the drives through an elctromagnet, then shred the drives and then melt them. Physical destruction is the only sure way to prevent recovery of data. I had to destroy a few when I was in the army.

We use a plasma cutter when destroying a customers' data. It's always cool to bring a box of cut up disks back to the customer when they ask "how do you destroy data?"

I've seen some pretty cool disk destroyers that actually crush the platters.

So, let's recap. First, zero out the drive, 8 times
Second, run a huge electromagnet over it
Lastly, run it through one of these destroyers.

No more readable data, ever.....

OOOHH wow what a creative post!!! The way you add snarky sarcasm with just a hint of pretension and that underlying feeling that you really have no usefull knowledge to offer BUT you make it seem like you do! BRAVO MY FRIEN D.....BRAVO

You know you love my post... smartass. who knows WTF pretension is but yea.

Here's an idea off the top of my head...smartguy. I would buy one of those electromagnetic locks with the open switches. I would place the 2 locks on my harddrive, both sides. Then I would place the switch in a safe place so I don't push it on accident! that would suck. I would suggest placing your switch next to your security cameras. So if anything fishy, click, harddrive erased...

Here's some electromagnetic locks I found. Maybe they'll help.

I would use this:

How's that for creative, smartass?

Good info in this thread.

I dont think the magent trick will work because the HDD is eseentially magnets. Those magnets in the HDD are extremely strong so you would need an even stronger magnet to over come the magnetic field already in place, or disassemble the HDD and zap it with a magnet but i dont think its possible to re-assemble the HDD.

Remember the machine the FEDS use to recover data can recover data from HDD when they've been set on fire, submerged in water(salty) or whatever else u can think of to destroy the HDD physically.

Data cannot be recovered (by anyone) from a drive that has been physically destroyed (enough). Drill (or press) holes through all the platters in several places, plasma cut the drive in half, fold the drive in half. Pull the drive apart, run a grinder over the surface of each platter. All these things will destroy a disk to the point it is not recoverable. Can they be done remotely, and on the fly- no, but disk will be "clean" ;)

I'm betting it will work. We won't know until we try won't we? lol. I would do tests with it on a cheap hdd first to make sure. trial and error I say.

The magnet trick plus encryption should be enough to get you through.

An electromagnet will ruin a hard drive. However, the platters can still be recovered. The information on the platters will be difficult to recover without special equipment, which all LEO agencies have access to. Even writing 0's to a disk 100 times and running an electromagnet over it, there is still recoverable information. Having multiple AC electromagnets around a disk will make it more difficult, but still recoverable. The only, 100% secure way to protect data is to physically destroy the platters by melting and mixing them. Hard drive platters melt at a low temperature, or you can use acid. Grinding is a very secure method also, not likely to leave any recoverable information, but it requires removing each platter.

If you are being raided, the only option you have is a combination of encryption and degaussing (degaussing is pretty much a electromagnet). I would not rely on current encryption alone, quantum computing will be a reality in everyday life soon, and will make current encryption levels trivial.

I have a bunch of electromagnets that I use for my cab. I also have a 600 pound electromagnet. I was going to try and erase a hard drive that I had to send back but decided to use DBAN The best software for deleting a hard drive.

I might give the electromagnet a try sometime since I have a few hard drives sitting here. It would be interesting to use DBAN and an electromagnet and send it to a data recovery company to see if they could recover it. I'm assuming they probably would be able to, but its still worth a try.
