For one the male ratio is usually lower so the need to pop more beans. That aside the ratio of quality males compared to quality females for the same amount of plants is lower. A good breeder can for the most part locate a good male by eye. There's things like root structure for one that is important but yes...ultimately you don't really know until you test the offspring.Good males are harder to some by then good females because the selection process isn't as immediately evident.
I know some breeders go so far as to make hash out of all of their males to test that as well.
