Do HID and Metal Halide bulbs use the same socket size? I know my ballast is switchable between them, but I wasn't sure about the socket.

A "mogul" based lamp is what you want in most cases. Most grow lights have mogul bases....although the smaller wattages often use a medium base I believe.

Hello all,

I use standard 250w hps bulbs and have great results.

It is my understanding that enhanced bulbs do offer an added benifit.

The question them becomes is the added cost worth the benifit.

And that question has not been emperically determined except by the bulb manufactureres and data is by default suspect.

However, sticking a HPS bulb down sweatpants is on the surface illegal and immoral but the below the surface is plain risky given the fragility of the bulbs. Not to mention karma.

Check my gallery for some results of a standard 250w hps or any other hps users gallery.

I believe that the bulbs like the Hortilux which are advertised as 55,000 lumens as opposed to a std bulb at 50,000 are worth the $40-50 extra. Why? $50.00 is like what an 1/8 cost. 10% more lumens is bound to produce more than 1/8 oz. extra weight over the life of the bulb. I don't see how it can't. I wish I had thought to buiy one when i bought my setup.

These grew pretty well under a $24.95 400 watt HPS They are starting week 10 of flower today. probably chopping soon.

Yeah if I dig a little deeper and am willing to drive a couple hours I might be able to find some. There are only smaller MH and HPS security lights at the local hardware store. But as far as like a Farm and Fleet(I dont really know of any other farm stores) theres none around here that I know of. Theres nothing but woods and small towns within a couple hours(or more) of here.
thanks for the reply though, I'll keep lookin :)
peace

just wanted to 2nd the guy who said to try an electrical supply depot / farm supply place. This is your best bet for cheap bulbs readily available. I buy my Phillips 1kw HPS bulbs by the case of 6 from my local ES Depot for about 44 bucks a piece...not too shabby.

One thing that was pointed out to me (in another thread) and I found to be true: The HomeDepot bulbs are usually OLD! I was buying mine from them and after reading this went and looked...my bulbs were almost 1yr old. Sure they are technically 'new' as they were never used, but a yr old bulb in the box made me a tad nervous.

So now I use a hortilux specific HPS and have the Homedepot bulb as a backup... figure it lasted a year in the store, can sure last another in a drawer.. :)

So just make sure you check those labels/bulbs before buying them!

It maybe different for others but from personal experience the Son Agro for Veg and Hortilux for flower just give more Range of light spectrum it does improve your buds including yield, if light is the only limiting factor.
