Some strains like NL naturally will have a bit of red to the stem. Stress from positioning can also cause the stem to be red. In veg, a red stem can mean a need for Nitrogen. I have cleared up red stems in bloom by adding more Potassium. Purple stems are usually the result of genetics or cold temperature. I hope this is helpful.
Hey thanks guys. Yeah my White Russian mom isn't looking so good these days. Red Stem thats getting hard. Also the Leafs are looking wilted.. Wonder whats up.
If it is your mother that is showing these problems then it is probably time to replant her in something bigger. A container with about a 5-10cm bigger diameter should do fine. Take it easy on heavy feeding and more changes, just let her adjust, and in less than a week the roots will have expanded and you will notice that new stem growth is nice and green, as well as the new leaves.
Actually they can be caused by nitrogen as well. Also if you are missing a micronutrient it can cause a lock out of macronutrients. Phosphorous would cause weak stems as well, but make them very soft. Phosphorous would be accompanied by browning older leaves. Most macronutrient def. look alike anyways. Giving a well balanced fert will fix them asap.
In my experience. Red means they want N, purple means they want P. But even if they are red a week or so before flowering (naturally or forced), Don't give them any N or VERY little. N will hinder the flowering process and it want take full affect untill the N levels drop and the P levels are is increased.
