Red Snake

I was looking for seeds in the fridge and I found some Red Snake F2 seeds I made in 2019 and had forgotten. When I searched in the forum I found the thread I made, that is archived and I can't edit it anymore.

Since I have a good memory of this strain, I thought about growing some of these seeds, that I made after selecting the most compact females. Anyway, they deserve a thread that is alive, not a frozen one.

I'll get things posted.

Nice looking sativa flowers, I don't remember what's the genetic make-up of Red Snake, maybe you could make a small description of the cross at the beginning of the thread dedicated to her. If the other thread is archived it's not accessible by everybody anymore.

CBG guys made this strain crossing their Oaxaca '79 cut with some Punto Rojo, an old school strain from Colombia, and after that they spent several generations selecting from the best specimens before releasing. So this is the brother strain of Mextiza and they share some characteristics.

It is way faster than any Colombian, and the best plants smell and taste strongly like wood, cedar type, not piney. That's what I find more interesting. It is probably not as strong as Mextiza, and is also a light producer, but the buds are top quality. Light and airy, sativa-like. but packed with resin.

I've had plenty of positive experiences crossing Mextiza with longer flowering sativas, so I believe RS will have a great effect in this kind of crosses also, and the terpene profile is quite different and attractive. Oaxaca '79 produces little but extremely fast and extemely terpene-rich bud, so its outcrosses tend to have the same features. But as I've experienced, it could be a consequence of the poor gene pool of the Oaxaca '79, that was extremely inbreed.

So this strain should be a good breeding tool as Mextiza is. It is a little picky and special by itself, but helps a lot reducing flowering time and adding some new terpenes to the mix.

I'll plant some F2 in some time. The disadvantages of working with these genetics is that the gene pool is very narrow. That's a problem also in Mextiza. I wish the CBG had released a F1 instead of crossing the best plants over and over, but they used to incross too much every one of their strains.

very nice.

this is one i regret not buying (ok, one out of many) while charlie was still in the game.

i've got a couple different oaxaca crosses from ace and from vermont man, but i'm waiting to get better at murdering seedlings before i try with seeds i actually care about.

how's red snake compare to commercial sativas, like jack? and i see you've tried a couple other sativas from ace and cbg... can you give a tiny idea of how this red snake compares to ones you've gotten from them?

Hi
I think RS is absolutely different in concept to commercial hybrids. Commercial sativas, like JH, SSSDH, Amnesia, etc are made to produce a lot indoors and at the same time try to avoid the heavy comedown that comes with indicas. So that's a compromise: you want a plant that looks like an indica for growing indoors and to produce a lot in a short time, but also you have to breed and select to have something less narcotic.

The result is mixed, since the effect is totally different to the sativa effects you look for, but it is normally better and stronger than the effect from indicas. Anyway, there is a comedown.

Red Snake is a rarity. Effect is much better than those of commercial sativas, but it is not a commercial plant. It produces very little compared with a commercial hybrid, and the buds are very light, but the woody taste is unique, and characteristic from the original Colombian Punto Rojo strain. The effect is also much much better than that of commercial strains, it is motivating and has not such indica comedown. And thanks to the Oaxaca '79, the amount of resin and power of the smoke is much higher than that of the original Punto Rojo.

So, this strain is probably not for everyone. Like Mextiza, I believe this strain can be one of the most interesting ones if you want to reduce flowering times in very long sativas, or have a different bit of flavor, without risking the heavy comedown that comes with the indica hybrids. And that's what I plan to do. If you want you can have a look to a thread I made, "breding for the best stimulating effect".
