Anyone know anything about good cameras and home surveilance products?

I currently have an Linksys IP camera that works, but not to the quality, speed, and caliber that I want. It was easy to setup and allows me to watch the surroundings of my home while I'm at work, but just doesnt cut it...

even worse its viewer only works in internet explorer.. which means I cannot use it on my liunx loaded laptop in firefox.


I think I may be looking at something they call a speed dome.

used to have a motion detector that called me, but required a home phone line which I refuse to have nowadays. Buddy got popped by answering the door once to LEO claiming a 911 call was made from this landline.

something that notified me via email would be great, but full video of the property from a remote location is really what I'm after. It'd be super nice to have a heads up if the landlord or anyone for that matter come snooping around.


note - I'm talking about exterior portions of my home... I know its a no-no to broadcast video of a grow..

Theres something out there thats supposed to be pretty good, a whole setup with cameras and a function to text message your cell phone when certain sensors are tripped.
Good vid is so important for that peace of mind factor, I'll see if I can find it.

Look into ZoneMinder. Free, linux based system.
I use it with a mix of wired and wireless IP cameras. Also supports PCI capture cards for traditional CCTV cams. If you are a DIY'er with ~some~ computer skills, its a great system.

Edit: Just saw you run a linux based setup. ZM has support on many distros, its available in lots of repo's, but I prefer to compile it myself on CentOS.

I get email alerts based on times of day movement, real time 'montage' of all cams, etc. over the web or VPN.

Expect to pay top dollar for higher end IP cameras. Look into Vivotek or Axis cams for quality. PoE (power over ethernet) is great for wired IP systems where you have no power source but can run some CAT5.

If you have no problem with running power/cabling for the cams, CCTV systems are a bit cheaper.

Several vendors on ebay sell a turnkey 4 and 8 cam wired bullet Vivotek system based on QNap NVR. Starts ~$1500 for 4 cams. No experience with it yet, but they get decent reviews. You will need some additional items (switch, PoE adapters, HDD, etc.)

I decided on the TRENDnet SecurView cameras. They aren't really high end, but good value for the money, lots of option choices, and they work together.

I have several of the TrendNet cameras. IP-100W, IP-110W, IP-400 and 400W's.

I think they are a little better quality than the Linksys cam that he has, definitely cheap, but not the highest quality, but decent quality/price point. My IP-400's with PTZ 'follow' motion once its detected.

I've worked with some AXIS IP camera's. I like them. They have good features but you won't break your bank. PoE is good and you could set it to email you on detection. The quality is more than good enough to identify someone. Check out the 210A. Small, simple, easy.
