Radio Scanner is a must have......

Just picked up a Bearcat handheld radio scanner. Got the local cops and the hydro frequencies programmed in. I even heard the meter reader when she came by.....lol. Has a "local" feature on it that locks onto any frequency in either VHF or UHF band. The two wireless driveway sensors I have also transmit on the radio scanner, and they're about a mile from the house. If you can afford a radio scanner, I suggest buying one.

Nice to know the wireless driveway sensors transmit to the Bearcat. Thanks for posting. I been wanting one for a long time.

Don't get caught with it in your car! You will get in trouble. Bye bye Bearcat. :D

Can't take it away if you're in Canada, they are not illegal, only if you have cellular frequencies programmed. If you want I can help you order one and the frequencies for your area.....

Plus, amateur radio is fun!

I've been meaning to get one for a long time now, next pay check I'm getting one.
Borrowed one from a friend once,it was pretty cool,he had his set to pick up the forestry dept also.If you grow in the mountains it can be invaluable.

i went ot radioshack last time i had cash and bought a triple-trunking scanner....was kind of lame after a while. Too much shit to figure out - you have to like hit the save button when it trunks or whatever, and so many police are on such a a narrow band that it makes it almost indiscernable unless you live in the middle of nowhere. I was getting shit from like 20 different towns. I ended up selling it a month later
EDIT: also on that note, all the ipod through your car radio and cellphone through your car radio gadgets ONLY WORK if you live in the middle of nowhere. Otherwise there's WAY too much interference and it's useless.

These are good but what you need is to try and find the federal channels.. Maby the channel the DEA would use since they might be the ones commin to kick the door in. But a scanner is def a nice piece of equiptment to have. But if you get raided and they find the scanner... Well let's just say it's very hard to prove that you weren't operating a continous crimminal enterprise.. You need to get specific channels or else you pick up everything out there.. My opionion I rather put outdoor cameras on the rooftop overlooking a few block radius. Maybe buy you a few minutes to do some damage control. But thats only if your watching the screen 24/7...

why stop there - hook up a flame-thrower to the doorbell. Anyone who rings the bell gets instantly incinerated - DEA, grandma, mailman

Does this kind of stuff work in all areas? Are the cops now to hightech? My aunt used to have one but this was 15 years ago and she now says she cant get anything because they switched to digital or something.

I know nothing about radios obviously so if anyone could help.

Scanners are very useful. I had one since '94. In an emergency situation...you know; what the cops know...very useful.

As far as I know portable scanners are not illegal?...I'll used mine, in my truck for years.

There are normal analog transmissions with some PD's (can be heard on any scanner, just punch in the freq.)

Some use voice inversion which is the analog above inverted, analog scanners can recieve this as well, but without an inversion chip it's garbled.

A lot are switching over to digital, some can be recieved with a digital scanner. It's harder than analog tho to figure out, and way more expensive than analog scanners.

Last but not least - digital encrypted... if your PD has this, might as well save your $$. There is no scanner available that can decrypt digi encrypted signals.

Here's a site for more details about radio...
