The curing of the bud is generally the larges contributing factor to grade A fine cannabis or pretty mids (if we are talking about sinsemilia). Beasters are a perfect example of pretty mids, looks alright doesn't have seeds smells mediocre but people still charge $50 an 8th where I'm from(Mind you I do not buy beasters because they are just pretty mids). If the stem snaps when you try to bend it it is dried properly. If you take the same bud and smoke it only dried and not cured properly and then smoke a bud from the same plant that has been cured properly it will be more potent, smell better, and taste far better than the one you smoked only dried. Also has the bud finished properly on the plant? If the bud has been harvested prematurely then the potency will not be their and the flavor will not be fully developed either. Trichomes are not always a fair indicator of how good the bud is. I'm sure many people here will agree with me on this fact, I have smoked herb that has many trichomes and it has tasted like crap(generally due to how it was smuggled, it will taste soapy if it was smuggled in dryer sheets which is apparent when you smell a bag, that is just one example it could be a few different things). I have also smoked herb that had few trichomes and was great, I met a grower once who had some of his herb that he had been working with for years that he called "The Retarded Seed". This man knew what he was doing when growing, drying and curing of the plants.
So, I would have to say you are just going to have to sample the herb to know what it is worth. When paying 50 an 8th or 100 a 1/4, or if you are buying Oz that go for 300, unless you are buying from a guy on the street corner I'm sure the hookup will let you take one hit to see how it is. I haven't met the pot dealer yet who doesn't smoke his or her self and one green hit out of their bowl shouldn't offend them at all. If it does maybe its time to find a new hookup.
