"The first use of the name Purple Haze for a specific strain of marijuana was in the 1970's. It is thought to have originated when a Seattle grower found a strange looking purple phenotyped female in a crop of the Californian Original Haze strain. The odd plant was kept and clones were cultivated and spread creating a clone-only strain. Technically any purple strain crossed with a haze strain could be called a purple haze, however many people will apply the title to any marijuana with purple foliage, either out of desire to increase sales and appear or just simple misinformation. The purple coloring is caused by chlorophyll breakdown triggered by environmental changes. The green chlorophyll no longer masks the purple-blue anthocyanin pigments, which some strains produce. It is claimed that the Original Haze strain has been preserved and actually genetically strengthened by cultivation, and is available from the Flying Dutchmen seed company."
Purple Haze was Original Haze with Columbian bloodlines.
