Outside is good because the fresh air. When samurai mentioned that he ran a bubbler in his perlite that is adding the necessary fresh air. What you find out after a few runs is that fresh air is the key to no contams. fresh air fresh air fresh air

this is some really great info! and i was wondering if there was something like a seedboutique of mushroom spore syriges? just a relieable place to order them from.
anybody know?

If you could name one thing that is imperative for success and one thing that will surely bring demise please post it.
Stamets book taught me a lot but I'm always willing to learn from successful growers.

Success: Maintaining proper environmental controls. Temperature, Humidity and Moisture content throughout all stages of growth. From Autoclaving, to Incubation, to Spawn runs, to Casing layers, to Fruiting.

Failure: Lack of clenliness. You can't be too clean -- use bleach and rubbing alcohol generously.

I thought this thread was to fill us in about growing mushrooms? I am totally into this but now very confused. I would ask that the thread be started completely over and gone thru step by step a little more thoroughly to explain the proccess. Maybe start out with a PF Tek method and let people catch on then go to the Bulk style because Im sure we all want pounds and pounds of shrooms. Im all about the cash flow here and it appears to me that one could make a decent living on just shrooms alone.

thanks tystick!, ill check it out, but i gots another question, ive been lookin at all the differsnt strains off Psilocybe Cubensis and theres alot of different types, will they all give you a different experience like it is with ganj?

For Starters

Mushroom Growing starts with a spore print or syringe. To answer your question, Griffin, there are different varieties of spores available and people believe certain ones to have different subtle effects like different strains of bud do. The most widely cultivated (hallucinogenic) mushroom is the psilocybe cubensis. There are many different strains of the cubensis from around the world. They vary from moderate to high potency, depending on the strain/growing conditions.

Once you've decided which strain to go with, you need to pick a starting substrate. For the PF tek this starting substrate will be brown rice flour mixed with vermiculite and some water, you can find the exact measurements at erowid.org where they host the guide, or the shroomery etc.

If you are not doing the PF tek you will be using a grain of some sort. You can use rye grain, wheat, barley, millet, wild birdseed, popcorn seed, etc. etc.

With the PF tek it is very important to add the correct ammount of water to your mix, as too much or too little can ruin your effort. This is why I like grains. With grain, you rinse it, allow it to soak in warm water overnight, rinse again, then simmer in a pot until about 5% of the kernels burst. Rinse once more and you're ready to sterilize (pressure cook/autoclave). This way you are sure the mycelium will have enough water to get it through the first stage of growth.

Whether you do the PF tek or a grain tek, you will be using glass canning jars to grow the mycelium at first. Adjustments are made to the lids to allow air into the jar, but through some kind of filter. I make my lids by punching a hole through with a screw driver, then wadding up some PolyFil to stuff down into the hole. These procedures can be seen at sporeworks.com I believe in a step-by-step presentation. This is also where I've always ordered my spores from and have always had them in hand within a matter of days. But I'm not trying to advertise for them, just sharing my experience.

Anyways, here are a couple pics of some recently started jars. The first pics were taken before innoculation

The white on top of the lid is a coffee filter, I tuck this on the lid before screwing the cap ring closed as an extra barrier against contamination while the jars are being sterilized and cooling. It is removed to innoculate the jar.

When injecting spores, you use the hole the PolyFil is stuffed into, sticking the syringe through on the side, and not directly through the PolyFil.

And this is B+ (left) and Penis Envy (right) about a week or so in without incubation. The B+ appears to have the most vigor, despite the cooler temps.

Don't have any pics to show of the PF tek, but I can explain it probably. Basically you use half-pint canning jars, poking 3 holes spaced evenly at the edges of the cap, and after adding your substrate to the jar, you fill the last inch or so up to the top with dry vermiculite. The top layer of vermiculite with the three holes in the lid allow air exchange and 3 points for innoculation.

I find grains to be much easier to work with than PF tek substrate.

A nice pressure cooker/canner that fits many quart jars will run ya $100-$400

There are some good sized kitchen pressure cookers too for under $100, though. You just gotta shop around.

full colonization!

full colonization!

This jar is fully colonized & the other is only slightly behind. If anyone wants me to continue posting as this one jar turns into many jars and those many jars into many boxes and those ... you get the point, let me know. took about 2 weeks to get from spore to this.

yeah I used to cultivate mushrooms ...
Pretty easy once you understand why and how...

The only thing now is I want to try Pan. Cyan. and have heard these grow on pastuerised straw ... and sources for this as im accquiring spores soon?
and i dont want to have to boil and sterilise my own I'd prefer a growkit without spores....

Keep up the good work ..

Peace

Unfortunately vhGhost, I got those 2 jars expanded x4 each (8 jars total) all fully colonized, but then didn't have enough time to carry on to the bulk substrate. Also, when I went to the pet store to buy the straw I usually use, I couldn't find it. I went to 5-6 different pet stores searching for it and couldn't find it. It was a 3 grain straw mix of oat, wheat and barely. $4.00 for a 4 pound bale. It was perfect for growing mushrooms too. All I can find now is green straw w/ no info as to what type of straw it is. That and alf afla. I've heard alfalfa contams super easy so I don't want to try it. I guess I could soak the green shit a couple times and let it dry in the sun. Then pasteurize it and should be good to go.

I can post pics of the 8 jars in the near future. They're old, but they still photograph well I bet.
