Powdery mildew -- please explain the concept to me

W

Whatever

When you start running a larger space you have to cull weakness when you see it...the sooner the better. The weak stuff shouldn't even make it to the production tables. Run most of your space with a proven winner(s) and experiment on the side. Uhhh...a table of mixed variety would be better run fed by hand with run-to-waste making adjustments for each strain. Maybe more like soilless and feed/water every few days so not so intensive. You should be able to neglect it a bit and still be OK. Who needs a woman you gotta babysit?

You'll figure it out

That's exactly what I was doing, with that 4th table as a tester/experiment table... although laziness got the best of me in using a single feed. Diseases and sicknesses singling out strains never really entered the equation, though. Another day, another lesson learned.

I've certainly learned from the mistakes made, and hopefully at the cost of loss of yield only on 1 table; not only due to loss of 2 plants but also just a lack of coordination, planning, etc on that table. So like the man SQ says... I'll just get what I get and learn to move on, to continue the show, with the new knowledge and experience I have now.

I have never had pm before, used a sulfur burner for prevention until week 4 of flower. About 3 days ago (start of week 8 of an 8.5 week strain) started to see spots on a couple of plants but now they are starting to spread throughout the garden. It is just a leaf here and a leaf there but it is on several plantsw. They are at 7.5 weeks and I wanted to take them 8.5 and they have only had three days of flushing. If anyone could give me their expert opinion on whether I can let them go 3 to 5 more days safely to finish my flush or if I should just chop now and be done with it would be much appreciated. I am going to decide tonight so please let me know!!!!
thanks

I can't tell you for sure as I haven't been "through" it yet, but this late in the game it seems you're a little too late for any remedies... except possibly Zone + Penetrator or potassium bicarbonate (not sure how that works). But even that I'd be afraid of giving a foliar application of Z+P this late, if not because of the scare of mold but also possibly ruining taste & safety? I wish I knew more about what's in that stuff... maybe someone else can chime in on experiences using potassium bicarbonate very late in the game.

Don't know what to say, personally and naturally my reflex action might be to flush ASAP and see how things go, but again never having experienced this I can't really say...

Another line of thinking tells me perhaps go with some sort of treatment (again, such as potassium bicarbonate or Zone + Penetrator), but possibly delaying flowering a bit to help "wash away" the foliar applications that you may choose to give, for better taste? Again, I'm not sure...

no I'm too late to do anything. I started a new thread but the are like 3 to 5 days from being peak ripeness I have already been flushing for three. so my question is more like am I safe to just let the pm go for 3 or 4 or 5 days so I can get all my flush and peak ripeness or should I just chop. choping tonight even would be fine but I would of course like to wait till it is perfect. am I playing with fire? or should I be ok for a few days

What do you plan on doing with the PM-laden bud?

The way I understand PM is that it will really pick up speed and spread exponentially quicker towards the end of the plant's life as the plant is dying and there will be less and less resistance.

its not on any buds at all just random leaves
I think i might just chop tonight...guess it is a sick day tommorow
would still welcome advice on how fast I can expect it to progress

im not too worried. I actually took a class on plant pathology and mycology and I am pretty sure pm isn't really any danger to people unless you smoke pm LADEN buds. and the mycelium are only growing insided the leaf which is infected. True, the mycelium will move through vascular system but that is really a small amount of fungus and it does not contain any spores. I wish I would have asked more questions that would apply I just need some sort of estimate on how fast I can expect it to spread. the professor was fond of pointing out mushrooms on our field trips that he liked to "smoke". he said it was like drinking a nice merlot! he was from india and Im not sure if he understood that we tend to frown upon that:)

Like i said I guess I should just chop. Why take the chance to get that extra 4 or 5 days. it's just not worth it.

PM is the toughest one to get a grasp on. It is often around alot but not everywhere. In 1930's PM infected hops plants in East coast. They tried to fight it but gave up. The whole hop growing industry moved to Washington state! Fast forward 60 years and late in 1990's PM started showing up in Washington! There are many types but only TWO infect cannabis. They have diferent environmental needs tho.

I think that maybe spores get into leaves occasionally but never make it to fruiting stage. Tehy gotsta get to it in a few months before u harvest.

I have been adding ProTekt - Silicon supplement to my plants alot as a preventative.

To research close to cannabis search on hops which is a similar plant and greenhouse tomatoes or cucmbers which grow in similar environments.

Once there are lots of spores its tough to fight. I had to harvest room and clean and start over. If you have many strains you might find a resistant one and grow only that for awhile.

Keep some clean moms in another place like ina aquarium elsewhere indefinately.

I posted some of my findings here a while ago

Differentiate between control=manage and eradicate. Control means you still can get it. Eradicate menas gone forever. You manage Herpes, you eradicate Gonnorhea!

My guess is 90% of growers mistake control for eradication. Impossible to erradicate outdoors but indoors possible. Filter your intakes and get air from in your house not outside.
