Portable Dabs

I've been playing with the 24g a lot since it arrived and I'm actually having a hard time finding a coil that is like "The One". I've done various diameter and length of wraps, both dual and single coils.... I dunno I can't find the sweet spot yet for the 24g.

I was trying to go down to a single coil so as to hopefully not have to load as much, or make it slightly easier to only load one -- but just doesn't seem as effective. Then having said that, while the pen does work well, I am wondering if I am using more product to get the same effect from the nail?

Definitely using more but if I can get my coils sorted I find it easier than pulling out the rig. I will see if I have to use more than titanium but I was thinking it is about the same.
How are your 24 dual coils? That still seems like it would be the best stiffness. I have been considering trying a 22ga sleeper but only if I can't find another solution

Did first build on real Patriot. Difference is night and day compared to Hcigar clone. 24 gauge is easy to thread with no magnification even. Anyone looking at clones - make sure to get one with full size post holes. I guess I lost sight of the 1:1 requirement when I saw how everybody loves the Hcigar.
Seems like the same efficiency as a nail but someone who dabs more should do a real test. I like the ease and not having glass to clear as with a nail. Can get just the size hit I want
Like the real Patriot but probably would have been happy with a clone if I had gotten the right one. I wonder if the real version will have better screws over time

7 wrap dual coil gave me 0.34 and it hits like a beast. I can't imagine needing a bigger hit than this produces but some people take in amazing levels of thc so maybe.

How are you counting your wraps, from the top?

I did just did a 7 wrap dual coil from 24 gauge and im down to .26 around a 2mm post, which is a little too hot for my liking, which is why I usually add 8 turns, what size post are you wrapping around?

I count the turns that go over the top including the first. I believe it is 2mm but going by the little screwdriver that came with my Patriot clone.

How often is anybody doing a dry burn to torch the residue? Seems like every 2-3 uses would be a minimum. I am getting not the best flavor like has been mentioned - burnt metallic kinda notes in there. Maybe just the nature of this setup
edit - yeah maybe it is too hot. eight wraps you say

I only did 7 because you had mentioned 7. That is good to know which way to go in turns if my ohms go lower - or I guess if I am finding it too hot (now that you mention it maybe a little cooler would be better). 8 wraps is fine with me if it needs it. The bigger surface area the better I guess.

I am not getting much on the deck either. I was overloading it to play with the coils before.

i count my wraps on the top and as long as I put in the right specs usually come out dead on the correct ohm reading.

what size post do you normally use? i find myself going to my 5/64th the most which is close to 2mm. but I have been varying them sometimes up to 1/8th or as small as 1/16th

I really put it to the test today... took it out on the boat with some friends. many many (probably oversized) dabs were had on it without one dry burn. it performed pretty damn well. highly successful i'd say haha. also no bad flavors, which may be due to leaving everything saturated for the next go around. I did get a bit on the deck from the over-usage but nothing to be mad about.

I bought everything on fatslabs list. Finally got all the pieces and put it together. Making the coils was a pain but seems like itll get easier with practice.

I am getting readings from .35 - .50 depending on how I adjust the coils/wick.

The other thing that will take practice is getting the oil to sit nicely on each coil. Depending on the oil, it is usually either too sticky or too crumbly.

My best results have come from putting it on a silicone mat, folding it, and flattening it down into a tiny pancake, then draping the tiny crepes over each coil.

The center pin's hole is too small for 2 strands of 24g Kanthal. My fingertips were bleeding from several puncture wounds by the time I gave up/ I was able to get each in halfway and tighten the screw.

Drilling out the side air holes made a big difference in the size hit/cloud.

I can see me getting proficient quickly ; )

and fatslabs,

I am interested in your offer. Last time I checked you werent able to receive pm's.

Sounds like a pita.

Standard e cig. Big variable voltage battery. Ceramic atpmizer and personally like the cloutank m3. Bout 50 bucks retail and you got a nice wax piece. Flavour is good without cleaning every few dabs. Everythings replaceable.

I know its not gonna give huge ripps but most people dont do rips at all. So this is perfect for me and I assume most everyone else. Easier design and use wuld make the mech mod more attractive.

If you want something discrete and works flawless the ecig and cloutank m3 ceramic at9mizer is the way to go. I do blasts in public all the time. Most think its an ecig.

Good clean wax and you dont have to clean it.

For the past 6 months, I've smoked concentrates exclusively. Once you use a torch and nail for any period of time, it really makes any other method unacceptable.

I bought "the Kind Pen" so I might have a way to get up in public or on vacation. While it got me stoned, it was nothing like taking a dab off a hot nail. I wouldn't even consider them the same drug.

It was around $100 and is basically a toy version of what I have now - which was around the same price.

I like design, machining, and general aesthetics of these customizable ones. They are highly customizable, and I like the DIY aspect of the coil builds. Its only tediuos because I have never done it before. I made a bunch earlier and I do it faster and they are better looking.

Not to mention the $ I'll make selling replacement wicks to my lazy or otherwise unmotivated friends.

Who doesn't loved machined metal and simple circuits? They're heavy and have a victorian vibe going on I cant quite pin down. And who doesn't love 19th century ephemera?

If you are happy with what you have, more power to you.

The thing I have sitting in front me is a different animal than my last device. Still not 100% there but getting closer

i am lazy and unmotivated
AND I buy pre made coils!
its not a bad thing
we all have our niches to fill
fill em and live and let live

i am still rocking my nemesis. still rocking the same coil. a new one will probably be a welcomed change. and a new/different coil design would probably be even better!

but i also just bought a new version of the micro g. they are fun. and the wife doesnt get scarred hitting it. and for air travel its pretty easy to handle. but still kind of weak sauce...

but some sauce is better than none!

aloha for all the killer info in this thread

Dont get me wrong, the kind pen worked, it just wasnt what I was expecting.

However, I did find the other attachments to be worthless.

And I would totally buy coils/wicks pre-made and pay to have them installed by a good installer. Just didnt have that option.

100' of 24g Kanthal and a sheet of #400 ss mesh should get me up to speed.

Seems like the design of the coils/cup could be more efficient for dabs.

Could you flatten a coil/wick with a pair of pliers so the oil would have a better platform to sit on or is the circular wrapping necessary to maintaing proper ohms...

And can anyone point me to an article on the science behind the coils & battery circuit? I hooked my Patriot up to the meter and got readings from .5 to .35. I guess I am shooting for .5 but I don't really understand how to adjust the coils to change the reading.

thanks

Yeah your right. Im not a dabber so would never consider the mech mod. Dabs make anything else pointless like you said. Love a good joint. So for the peeps who dont dab those 510 pens r fine, if your like me and the bong stays in the closet till party time.

hmmmmm...maybe I need no dry burn at all. Could be that charred it and ruined the flavor.
