Pollen hazard ⚠️

Fellow growers, as I did a small hike with the missus after dinner last week I’ve stumbled upon a ten by ten square miles hempfield about 3 miles from our home. This is a commercial hemp field from Hempflax [Sensi seeds], and I was wondering if the pollen from these fields could screw up my little [10 plants] yearly backyard growing operation? Any recommendations, tips, tricks or should I just give up straight away.. 😅

You may want to consider a small greenhouse, that's a lot of hemp. Hopefully your plants are located in the opposite direction of prevailing winds.

As an experiment maybe leave one or two plants in the open and see if they get pollinated. With few trees and other obstacles, pollen can travel on the wind pretty far.

Philosophical question - Since the hemp growers don't seem too concerned if their hemp pollinates weed (the kind we consume) would it be fair if their hemp got pollinated with thc cannabis?

Great question @Captain Red Eye; I think these particular farmers really don’t give a damn/are aware what their crop does to other crops.. Their hemp is mainly used for fibres they use in car industry and not for consumption.

I agree, with that big of a hemp farm it's likely the farmers don't care about any "collateral damage" to people growing backyard weed. Although the actual damage is real. many people would not consider that weed growers are suffering a harm caused by hemp growers.

While it might sound odd, the reality is it's a potential case of hemp males raping thc cannabis. Since I like to point out government absurdities, (it's target rich) you might consider bringing a civil suit and claim your healing plants have been victimized (raped!!) by bands of roving pollen particles launched from the loins of thousands of male hemp plants. It could make an interesting case. Lol.

Only if there's males to produce pollen, most farmers use femminized seeds i thought

That's a good question.

I'd guess on that size hemp production fem seeds would be costly and if it didn't diminish the finished hemp product regular seeds would be used to increase profit.

I would think It depends on the prevailing winds. In my opinion the worst thing that might happen is you will get lightly seeded weed , no big deal. I regularly move male plants just 50’ or so to collect pollen and I end up with very few if any unwanted seeds .I realize that my few male plants don't compare square miles of plants but they are much closer. I think you should just try a few and see and then we'll know. You could try growing varieties that flower at different times than the hemp , or you could use a row cover to keep the wind - pollen off them .don't give up !
