do you smoke tobacco? if not, would you be cool with someone firing up a cheap-ass cigar and blowing the smoke in your face? second-hand smoke etc.
I know my opinion isn't super popular among this crowd.
you're good as far as i'm concerned. :good:

I've have been to jail for weed and have had cuffs on a few times. I didn't like it, but they were really just doing their job. I also hated cops when I was young, and if you're an asshole they'll treat you that way. I've learned over the years that a little respect goes a long way.

If I was a cop I wouldn't want to punish people that were cool. But I would have no problem getting out the baton for the assholes who treat me like a dickhead. I know my opinion isn't super popular among this crowd. Especially if you were in prison. But you really should be more upset with the citizens and politicians who were against weed that created those laws than the cop who enforced them.
Give respect get respect......how it works in prison.

A cops job is to put people behind bars. Most are dicks and enjoy power and fucking people's lives up. You can say they are just doing their jobs but they obviously support the oppression or they would find a different line of work. they are a goon squad for politicians. JMO after doing time for growing weed for a cancer clinic.

My brother in law is a cop, retired now but he told me him and his buddy used to set up the radar gun, he would speed and his buddy would clock it on radar and use it all shift and whenthey pulled someone over they would use that number and drop the speed a bit, issue a ticket and the person who got teh ticket would thank them for lowering the speed and they would laugh about it.

About 1/4-1/5 of cops in the US are military veterans. So at least 1/5 automatically have my respect.

I agree though, some are assholes. Cops in Truckee CA weren't cool to us snowboarders when I lived there. We were totally targeted. Once got a ticket for 5 over when I passed a county cop on I405 in WA state. The speed limit was 65 and I passed him at 70. What a dick. I've been arrested in CA, WA, ND, and SD so it's not like I love cops. But how you interact with them makes a huge difference.

The only way to fight cops is with a lawyer in court.

I have no use for police. But I don’t go out of my way to make that known. Many idiots are dead because they couldn’t sit still and shut up. Even if you could beat up several cops with guns, what then? Do people think the cops will chalk it up and try better next time?

I think most people are conflicted in how they think of cops in general. There there are "shades of grey", but a cop's job could be divided into two types of work:

1) Protecting the public against harm. Stopping violence or other direct threats against the citizenry. I think most people respect this type of work that cops do.

2) Hall monitor, Tattletale, arbitrary enforcers of victimless crimes. Maybe stopping someone walking down the street minding their own business and finding out they have some weed on their person. Or maybe doing a wellness check on someone in their home, smelling weed and busting them for it. This is the kind of work that a lot of people have zero respect for. Cops clearly are given an amount of latitude to make personal judgement calls on violations of laws on the books (otherwise giving someone a warning wouldn't be allowed).

Focusing on the first type helps society remain intact. The second type is unfortunate and a manifestation of a broken aspect of our society.

Oh sure, we can say that cops don't make the laws and they're not the arbiters of what laws to follow or to what extreme, but let's use an analogy related to the business world. Let's say a company made a policy (ie a "law") saying that all employees had to do some sort of demeaning, embarrassing exercise that was really, an invasion of their privacy. It's a stupid policy and everyone knows it. The manager (ie "the cop") is given the task of making all employees follow that rule. A manager that carries that task out to a letter...are they respected by the employees at all?

Those damn cops. Who needs them?

Daniel Alfin, 36, and Schwartzenberger, 43, were killed and three other agents were wounded on Feb. 2, 2021, while trying to serve a search warrant in a child sexual abuse material case at an apartment in Sunrise, near Fort Lauderdale. When law enforcement later entered the apartment, the agents’ killer had committed suicide.

While the exact numbers are not clear, the slain agents were part of an investigation that led to nearly 100 arrests and more than 40 convictions of members in an online pedophile ring in the United States and Australia, according to news accounts.

Some people hate cops until they need one.
I called them once, got woken up by a nutter with a serrated 10’’ cleaver while asleep with my girlfriend in the back of a car and tried to get away but the windows were misted up and couldn’t see much so ended up in a ditch with said nutter smashing rocks against the window trying to get in, happening on and off for about four hours.

The sun was coming up by the time the police arrived, breathalysed me and accused me of making the story up to get the car out of the ditch, when they realised they couldn’t pin anything on me they tried to leave us there and only agreed to give us a lift to the nearest village to wait for the recovery truck because my girlfriend started thumping one on them in the chest.

They communicate with violence, and own a monopoly on the use of it. It takes a particular personality to survive in a job like that, an unthinking thug who drinks heavily would do well in this line of work.

Anyone with a moral compass and capable of independent thought wouldn’t last long.
They’d be asking why they were being told to kick in the doors of people suffering from ms, cancer, autoimmune disease, ptsd ect and steal their homegrown medicine.

Same goes for the military, wouldn’t anyone in their right mind be thinking these aren’t terrorists with weapons of mass destruction, these are farmers we’re terrorising with fields of hash plants that we’re burning because their leaders decided to start selling oil in other currencies than the $.
They just got on with it and locked up the army of human shields that went over there dressed as clowns to support the locals in Guantanamo.

not what i meant, sorry. would you enjoy breathing the second hand smoke? lots of folks don't like the smell, and i'm one of them. i KNOW i'm not the only one like that. "stink up the joint" doesn't sound very concerned about others possible preferences. i go outside to fire one up at a party if it is a non-smoking household.
