Went out and watered again this weekend with 100 gallons, and then it got really windy monday. Checked on the plants and they were mostly good, just a few leaning. So just used the palm of my hand again to firm the soil on the back side and trained them by pulling up and in the desired direction and it worked, even in heavy flower season! Plants have a good root system going this year! :smoke:

Got really cold this week, dipped down to around 40 every night. Next week is likely frost I think, so I bought a couple cases of jars today, and we are on standby. Hoping to let them go until the 14th, but I think next weekend it will be time, with the cold weather coming in. If they don't mold, I can let them stay out and ripen as the weather warms back up mid month. We will have to see. They are really thick, the buds won't freeze. :smoke:

Smoke tests have shown the plants are pretty ripe already, potency is there.
How about a couple shots. Going to water this weekend, keep a good thing going! What do you think? :smoke:

Wow it got cold this week. Plants may have already seen a light patchy frost at 38 this week! Next week is becoming more likely for a frost/freeze. All this cold will be shutting down the growth, so its harvest time before things start going south. Will be harvesting after the cold night or in between the 2, I guess it doesn;t matter, its just time. The cold will only last for a couple hours and its an elevated protected area. Oh yeah cold air drain like an orchard. There is a cliff nearby. :smoke:

Smoke test of a small bottom branch from the tallest indica shows good potency and a refreshing light citrus fruity hue from the sativa candy spice side of the line. The bud was dried on the plant. Was rough on it with watering. :smoke:

Check out the view this evening! :smoke:

Weather is swinging back and forth, and looks like an early frost this year!

I need some guidance from a grower in northern climates. A frost freeze is expected friday and saturday night. How does this affect the harvest? Should I harvest before hand and have them there hanging to dry under tarps when the cold nights show up, or does it matter at all, and I can harvest afterward/ in between cold nights?

I think it would be fine, the buds shouldn't freeze and get slimy with a short period of near freezing or sub-freezing temps. Please let me know you experience! Thanks! :smoke:

Glad i found this great forum where I can get help. I have actually harvested in January, Jan 16th I think it was when I thought the plot may have been compromised. Plant was dried and ready to smoke in Jan. :smoke:

Frost isn't a major concern, I have harvested plants after the 1st light snowfall with no problems.

I always find that after the 1st frost plant growth slows, but resin production continues and may increase as the plant tries to protect itself from the cool tempuratures.

I have seen plants come through a moderate freeze before (-2 to -3c) and continue to grow fine so a frost should not be a big deal. That being said if you notice some tissue damage to the small bud leaves after a frost or freeze either harvest or keep a very close eye on the plant as cellular damage can be an invitation to mold. Best wishes on a good harvest

Pipe
I have seen you hang under a tarp before. I have done this many times and its nice to see some guerrillas still out there. Doesn't completely dry it but enough that a couple of days in a controlled enviroment and it will be dry. Most of the time I try to trim and remove the buds before a hauling them in. Sometimes not possible if you have deer hunters in your neck of the woods.

I live in Northern IL , very near WI, and have dealt with frost a few times. When I first started guerrilla growing it was not uncommon to have frost the 3rd week of September every year. I remember getting up before work or daylight and going out to remove the tarp I had place over my plants. After work putting the tarp back over for 4 or 5 days in a row. Not fun our safe. I gave that practice up because freedom is more expensive weed.

Pipe you've been around and you know it all depends on the severity of the frost. The weather person is rarely correct and it also depends on where you are planted. If you have a tree canopy near you it will help keep the frost off your plants. If you are in the bottom lands where frost tends to settle then more chance of getting hit.

I'm in the same situation, we had calls for frost for 3 days in a row. I live in the city so its hard to to know what happened in the bush. Concrete holds in a lot of heat. I try to look around in large open areas with no tree canopy as I drive to see if we really got any frost. If it was heavy I would then consider heading out to my patch. If its light frost, I hold off. Not a perfect method but I don't like forcing a visit to a guerrilla plot. It should always be planned out.

If the buds do get hit by frost its likely some of the pistols will turn brown . Not a big deal but if your harvest is still two weeks off you then have to watch out for bud rot. Frost bite is never good in my opinion but a little bit will not kill them but again watch out for bud rot in the days after.

Good luck and its great to see you are still out there lurking in the bush.

Thanks for the info hamstring! I'm right in your vicinity near IL. They can get dry out in the bush, it takes about 7 to 21 days. Depends on the weather. There is a field nearby, and the area they are drying in the woods is somewhat open, so that helps airflow.

Will be a potential freeze with frost likely both nights this weekend, and there's also frost potential tonight. Thinking they need to be cut down this weekend. Going to be cold and windy, but it will be good to have the plants down under the tarp before the freeze sets in friday night. Plants are potent, and I'm not carrying any more water. They are at peak potency now which is around 64 days, the recommended Deep Chunk finishing time. They will at least be chopped and under tarps when the freeze sets in. It will go quick with less mold.

Watered yesterday with 20 trips so it was 100-120 gallons. Warm weather this week will help them ripen up. Stay tuned for a few new views from the garden.

Did a deep watering of 100-120 gallons again Sunday. Found a couple molded tops, but its very minimal this year. It is so great not having to deal with mold outbreaks everywhere. Got the plants healthy and weather is cooperating, so harvest is going to be a breeze! :smoke:

Went back out this evening to train the plants back into place that were leaning over from deep watering. Its kind of a 2 day process to water this time of year. The plants want to lean after watering, but you have to wait for the soil to firm up to settle them back into place.

Here's a couple views, I have been busy, theres a few more shots to go through. :smoke:

This is my favorite plant. Its just like the choice indica resin plant, only taller and LOUDER resin. I really like this one, well I bent the stem to the top bud. Its so tall. I was trying to look at a dead leaf, it was a minor budworm, and was pulling it the wrong way and it bent. Thankfully we have a branch nearby to support it. Got a sampler from this plant this evening, one branch top molded. :smoke:

Just realized, the tall favorite indica is the sativa candy spice from 2017. Several of these plants have that smell and look. I think I may be just a few generations out from having an inbred line of that phenotype. See if I can dig up a pic from around 2017.

Few more shots from the garden. After I took these pics, I found a little mold in a couple small tops, so the garden is starting to get chopped up a little. Actually mold is very little this year since there hasn't been too much rain lately thanks to God's grace! We had some rain in September, but it wasn't a large amount. Less mold will make harvest go fast and be fun. May not get as much finger hash, but plenty of clean herb to go around. I think the watering really helped the plants fight off mold as well.

Had a 37 F frost last night, and then it was above 70 today, and will be for a couple days until this weekend its forecast to be near freezing, so the plants will be ready to come home, I think. Colors will be maxed out this year. Its usually doesn't get this cold until the end of the month.

How about a few more views from the garden. Enjoy! Happy Harvest! :smoke:

So glad to have been able to capture these shots. You just have to try. Weather was so nice this weekend. Good for pics. Warm crystal clear skies. Next weekend will be cold and windy.

2018 Album pics

Pretty sure this is the Sativa Candy Spice ( medical indica resin) phenotype in the first year planting out seed from choice plants. Need to look in the thread to make sure, but the resin is linked in inheritance with certain flower morphology traits. :smoke:

Here we go, pretty sure this is it too.

Black seed trait was passed down when choice was made. Not linked with any one resin phenotype, but they all have similar hues/flavors of resin in common.

Frost showed up a couple weeks early here, so it was time to chop. It wasn't just frost, it got below freezing a couple times! Waited as long as I could to chop to let them ripen. Smoke tests were showing mature resin profiles, so it worked out fine! Drying outdoors has been easy this year. Weather has been dry and somewhat warm with a breeze, so the flowers will probably be dry after just a week hanging to dry.

Was a beautiful fall day for harvest, had to snap a few shots while I had the chance, but then it was all work into the full Harvest moon. :smoke:
