The tub is 12 gallons, and the drill bit was somewhat undersized. I really didn't care what size it was because after I drilled it, I tapped each hole with a 10-32 tap. Since I was only running thru PVC, the predirlled hole size really didn't make much difference. If I do another, I won't bother to tap, I'll just under-drill the hole slightly. Since both pieces are plastic, they screw together fine without the threads. No sealant was needed at all. Besides if it leaks a drop, what does it matter? It's just going to drip back down into the reservoir anyway. Hope this helps.

Hi there Pipedream.
I was looking at some old photos from OG and found your setup today here at IC.
You got skills my man. Everything you throw up here is awesome. One of these days, I'll shut down my closet-grow and get me a cabinet. Me ol' bag is buggin me about her needing the closet space. lol
anyway...keep doing what you do!

Thanks for the kind words. I try to remember the old Chinese proverb that says something about "the journey being as important as the destination". I've always gotten as much joy and relief from building my garden and tending it as I have from the med's it produces.

Hey everyone,

Thanks for stopping by. If its your first time here or your 25th I really appreciate your visit. It's been a tough year for me both health wise and garden wise as a result. I've had starts that I was unable to keep up with, and growing problems out of my control. However, in spite of it all, I never lost faith and enjoyed every moment spent with my garden. I'm up and running once again so I figured I should throw up a few pic's. As always I'm glad to hear your thoughts and questions. So take a look at my hopeful "Mom-To-BE" .........

Sprout almost died so I left it outside in a stream for a few days.

About two to three week after being revived.

Another couple of weeks & it split to two main branches.

Looking sad at a friends home. Had to be relocated for a while due to major home repair work at my place.

This is her currently, back at home in tyhe box. That's Jr. catching a bit of shade.

OK, so to continue where I left off............

Today, I finally got around to taking some cuts for clones. The Mother plant is now under 12/12. If it turns out to be female, I'll grow out and flower her and the clones. If not, then everything goes into the compost pile and I start all over from seed.

Lets hope for the best.

Take care everyone!

Pipedream,
Thanks for the great info! You set the standard! I have a couple of questions....
1) Does the air stay on all the time or cycle off with the light?
2) I plan on using a 150w hps bulb in a cabinet very similar, will 4 feet of vertical grow space be enough or should I give a little more space?
3) I plan on starting with some bag seed I have been saving, or should I order some seeds, where did you get the Jamaican Sativa? What is your approach when starting from seed...lighting cycles...nute amounts etc.
4) Can you clone from plants in the veg chamber or take some clippings from a plant when you harvest the bud?

So far I bought a really nice all wood armoire that matches our furniture by searching craiglist for 175$. The first thing I did was put in a cam lock bought at ACE for 7$. Ordered a 150w hps security light and replacement bulb from e-conolight 58$. Ordered all the air equipment like hoses, valves, pump, tubing, air stones and tees from petsupply 40$. Found some cool little 5 liter containers from the 99 cent store, they have green lids with clear bottoms so I used black electrical tape darken em up also from the dollar store 8$. I sure wish I could have found the ones you got, those are cool. I looked at every dollar store in my area with no luck. I ordered a tds and ph meter from Ebay 38$. I still need to get the nutes, hydroton, net pots, timer, and build an odor scrubber. I am taking my time to try and start off on the "best foot forward" so to say. I really admire your setup and thank you for the great info.

Thanks for the kind words.

1) Air and Exhaust Fan on 24x7

2) 4 feet is plenty, even for larger plants. Some folks do it in a computer case!

3) Bag seed is OK to learn with. However, for all the time and money you'll invest on your first cycle you'll be happier with good known genetics, even cheap ones. I bring my seeds back mysefl from Jamaica, been doing it for years. I pop my seeds in water or a damp paper towel, then move them to rockwool. Lights are on 24x7. No nutes till you have your first set of real leaves. Then start off very weak (150 PPM) and slowly move up from there.

4) Both work, however its much easier to take cuts from a pant in veg. Once flowered, it takes forever to develop a root system.

Sounds like you are well on your way. Keep me posted and feel free to ask if you have more questions.

Pipedream,

Much thanks for the reply!
1) ok, so start out 24/7 with the lights and then approximately when should one switch to the 12/12, a couple of weeks to one month?
2) What is the max ppm on the nutes, 1000?
3) Should I try to get the new plants as close to the light as possible while vegging or will setting them on top of another similar container be enough with the 4 feet of vert in this cab?
4) I noticed you are adding plants into your cab during the 12/12 light cycle and letting them grow together harvesting every 2-3 weeks. Did you allow these plants to fully veg somewhere else on the 24/7 schedule, or did you just allow them to veg in there on a 12/12 with the more mature plants?
5) Can your system work with different kinds/strains of cannabis, or does it work better if all plants are of the same mother or batch of seeds?

These questions may be a little newbified, my apologies, thanks for taking time to help out your fellow man!

PIFF - Your 600 is more than enough light for your closet. You'll wind up with 100 watts per square foot. While you can grow fine bud with less, the 600 will kick ass. The issue will be.....can you cool it. That 600 will generate a ton of heat that will need to be extracted. Remember, keep you light high, draft as much air thru it as you can, and have it exit near the top of the closet. Let fresh cool air come in thru the bottom. Good Luck!

stub - How long you let them veg can vary anywhere from a week or two up to two months. It all depends on how you intend to prune them and if you are going to train them. In any case, I like to at least have three sets of alternating nodes before any plant goes under 12/12.

The max on nutes will vary with strain, lighting, and available CO2. In any case every strain I've grown has maxed out between 875 & 1150 PPM. Your guess of 1000 is right in the ballpark.

Keep your young plants close, but not untill they are well established. Putting sprouts too close will stunt their future growth. Rasieing a pot by placing something under it will work fine.

If I'm starting from all new seeds or clones, everything goes in together. First on 24/0 then 12/12. If I'm staggering my harvest, new plants are started from seed or clone and vegged on the kitchen window-sill as a house plant. During the evening they have a small CFL over them. In that case the box stays on 12/12 all the time.

I often have a variety of strains going at the same time due to the gift seeds or clones from fellow growers.

I hope I hit on everything.

Piffdaddy,

You are not butting in, thanks for the help, 2 grows under your belt is 2 more than I have so any input is welcomed and appreciated.

Pipedream,

Thanks again, you hit everything! Based on your answers I am going to see about designing the bottom portion of my cabinet as a vegging area using CFL's. I need to be ultra stealthy. Even though I have been smoking for years and have a prescription...my inlaws might freak. The only people that know are my wife and my mom. And my wife does not want to shout this out from the rooftops...believe me. My wifes family is over weekly so I am hoping to use the closet for everything. I could probably squeeze out about 19 inches of vertical space in the bottom. Would that be enough space for vegging? If not might it work out to keep a mother to clip from and do batches of 6 clones at a time without staggering?
I was also wondering if you have ever used a vaporizer? I have never used one but it sure sounds like it would make smoking awesome! What if any do you recommend?

You can veg fine in 19 inches of space, or keep a mom as a clone doaner. Like I said earlier, there are folks doing complete grows inside speaker boxes and computer cases.

I've tried several vap's, and even built this one myself.... (see below)
It's a basic convection unit. They are fun to build, but not really worth buying. (convection one's, that is)

The price on them runs from dirt cheap, all the way to where you have to sell your first born. And like the old saying goes...you get what you pay for. It's a great way to use marijuana if you are truely health-conscious. Used properly, they eliminate almost all of the toxins associated with smoking. A lot of medical users get great results with the whip and box type. Check out the Vapor Brothers or the Vapor Doc to see what I'm talking about. From my experience, the portable ones aren't worth the money or effort, so count on still smoking or eating while away from your home.

Pipe,
You da man! I have learned sooo much from your threads!!! Thanks for taking the time man seriously. How do you like that little vap unit you made? Do you use it often? I love smokin, but I hate all the extra gunk....sometimes instead of getting more high....I get all choked out and start getting a headache. I wonder if my lungs look like the goop scraped outta my pipe. I thought the vaporizer might be what I am looking for. I am leary about chunkin down 2-4 hundred bucks though.
Once I get all the misc bits and pieces gathered together for the cabinet I will post some pics.

Pipedream, you have a masterful set up. I've been reading and re-reading your set up so I can hopefully adopt it for my own needs. I'm going to be a freshman in college in a few weeks and I'm looking to start growing now that I'll be away from the (rightly) paranoid eyes of my parents. So how secure is would you say your system is if left in a walk in closet? Assuming of course my room mate isn't a rat (highly unlikely, I'm going to a well known stoner school), and my RA isn't overly intrusive into my room and life. Are there any overt signs that your cab gives off, aside from smell as I intend to go heavy on smell prevention. Does it leak light during the veg cycle? Will it require more work and effort then a full time college student can handle? Thanks for the inspiration and help
