Perfect pot size for Auto Flowers?

I use bigger pots than necessary on everything I grow, especially autos. Autoflowers like pots with lots of depth. The plants show the best quality and health if the roots can extend downward without hitting bottom. They will do this in most pots and it will cramp their growth.

cut the tops off 2litre bottles, they work well and you can cram many into a small space. always worked perfectly for me

Agree that autos like a deep pot. Last year I used 3 gallon which were too big and ended up wasting soil in all strains except Mi5. 3 gallon is a good size for them. For indica based like Hindu Kush and Pakistani Ryder a 1 or 1 1/2 gallon is good. For other strains that get a little bigger, like Diesel Ryder, White Russian, etc. a 1 1/2 or 2 gallon is fine. I just bought some 6 x 6 x 9" deep square ones that I'm going to use for my first indoor grow.

online or hydro store, i suggest the local hydro store. seems to be safer then having pots shipped direct to you.

The biggest pot you can grow with! Rootspace is loved and necessary, and you don't want to stress autos by transplanting them too late. Good rule of thumb: Just avoid it if you can!

Hydro store or any local garden center, they usually have a few kicking around fore re-sale or for free!

2-3 gallon, might even learn more towards 3 gallon. I planted my runt auto in the 3 gal as that was the only smart pot (breathable grow bag) I had left. Since then, its getting bigger, and much bushier than the others. Similar stature, just looks much happier in the 3 gallon. For optimal yields, 2-3 gallon pots.

Fwiw, I would germ seeds and put them into maybe 16oz cups, and repot once into a 2-3 gallon pot. I used starter cubes --> 1 gal pot --> 2 and 3 gallon growbags, and I truly believe it fucked my yield. Auto's seem to be very finicky from my experience and what I have read.

As stated earlier, I do believe depth may be more key than total size. I would start in the 16oz cups, and just cut out the bottoms and transplanted like 2/3 of the cup into the medium.

I used 3 gallon pots last year for all my autos. When I harvested I cut the stalk above the soil line. I then loosened up the soil and removed the root ball so I could see how big they were. The only strain that completely filled the 3 gallon was the Mi5, which didn't surprise me since they were considerably larger, around 30". Any of the phenos there were in the 15"-20" range used about 2/3 of the pot. The smaller ones, below 12", used less than half the pot. Based on that I plan on using 2 gallon pots this year for strains like Diesel Ryder and White Russian that are in that 15 - 20" range and 1 1/2 gallon for the dwarfs like Hindu Kush and Pakistani Ryder. IMO using bigger pots for those is only a waste of good soil.

Thanks !

Btw, are The Purple Jems Considered Dwarfs? Description Say's They Grow Between 25 - 35 Centimeters ( 35 Centimeter = 14 Inches ) ?

Yes, in my book anything under 20" would be considered dwarfs. Non dwarfs, or for a lack of a better term, mid sized, would be ones like Mi5, Onyx, White Label Snowryder, etc. that get 2 to 4' high.

Thanks !

I would err on the side of too big rather than too little.

I went with 2-3 gallon for some Lowryder#2's, and they completely filled them, and needed more room.

I currently have some EasyRyders in 5 gallon smart pots, and they seem to love stretching out in there..Won't be able to tell until I chop them as far as what they used, or didn't, but I would rather have a little extra soil go to waste than stunt a plants full potential due to something as simple as container size.. IMO

I Found These Real Nice Square Black Pots That Have Nice A Depth To Them.

4 Inch Wide x 10 Inch Depth
5 Inch Wide x 8 Inch Depth
5 Inch Wide x 12 Inch Depth

Which One Should I Choose?

I picked up a lot of standard 5 gallon buckets. Is that way overkill for autos?
I was thinking maybe put two in a bucket. I read somewhere that that works to let two seeds know they should grow up to be opposite sex and reproduce.

I've seen mossy post pics of big pots with a few plants in them, don't know what size they are. I am using 2Gal grow bags right now. I used 1Gal round pots last run, i was happy with the result, but i am seeing what truth there is to this bigger pot deal. As far as auots go anyways. I just hate cutting them down to see a half bag/pot of wasted soil. I don't like root bound but full usage of the medium is nice.
