Paying with large bills

hush

Anyone ever get hassled, or just turned away, when trying to pay for stuff with large bills? I do a lot of freelance work on the side, and my clients sometimes pay me in cash. When they do, I don't deposit it into my bank account... I just shoebox it, and use it for "going out money" with my wife. But last night I had some trouble paying for my $40 tab with a hundred dollar bill... The manager of the restaurant kept hemming and hawing about it, asking if I had a smaller bill. Needless to say, I won't be going back there again, but it made me realize that there are people who presumably use cash only, all the time, and it made me wonder if there is an anti-cash sentiment going on out there these days? Has electronic money completely taken over now to the point that cash is no longer king?

Anyone ever have problems paying with large bills? And I'm not talking about buying a pack of gum right after the store opens for the day, with no change in the drawer yet. I mean, for reasonable transactions.

Especially restaurants, bars and gas stations. Not for small purchases either. Got hassled recently about paying for 80$ in diesel with a hundred! I love when they try to get a credit or debit card from me instead, I don't have one! Always look at me crazy when I say that. Haha

Yes. Places do that all the time so my response to them is always the same... Either take my cash or this shit is on the house. their attitude changes real fucking quick.

yes n' no up here in MN, smaller stores don't seem to mind if you hit them with big bills late in the day, as mentioned above breaking a c-note early from someone's till can torque a store owner who might struggle to make change after that.

btw:
I bought a 3-pack of those currency testing markers, you know, the ones the cashiers swipe across your big bills to test for counterfeits. anyway I bought a pack of them and started carrying one around, when I'd hand a c-note over the counter it would get tested, when I was given 20s in the change I'd fan them out and test them myself.

every fucking cashier looked surprised as a mofo.......

The only places I usually have any issues is at gas stations or places that just generally don't keep much cash in the register.

Had one issue at a restaurant once. They wouldn't take my $100. And their credit card machine was out of service, lol! They actually tried to get me to walk to the ATM down the street. I told them they were shit out of luck and should have informed me BEFORE I ate that their CC machine was down.

Got tired of their bickering and so I told 'em I was gonna run to the ATM. Went home instead.

 WTF? i could understand if you were at 7-11 buying a pack of gum and were going to take ALL of the change, but a restaurant not having change for a $100 is because the manager is a fool anyway

we have a take and bake place in denver called papa murphey's. i went in to pick up $63 worth of stuff with a $50,a $10 and a $5 but they wouldn't let me do it. they don't take any bill larger than a $20 and it's company policy. when i asked WTF the girl at the cash register just shook her head and said "it doesn't make any sense to me either" ......... which is probably the only sensible answer that there is to the situation, so i just smiled and handed her a credit card

Always been a bitch getting rid of them up here. I don't even take hundreds from the bank anymore if I cash a check. Best way to put a stupid look on the server/clerk/staff's face is to pull out a brown note. Double meaning there if you're into fart jokes. Our hundreds are brown.

By law, all businesses are required to accept Federal Reserve Notes. Says so right on the front of the notes, in all caps: "THIS NOTE IS LEGAL TENDER FOR ALL DEBTS, PUBLIC AND PRIVATE". Anyone refusing to accept them in the United States is incurring, at a minimum, a civil liability. It is only a matter of time before some prick business - like the Papa Murphys mentioned above - gets sued for refusing cash, probably be a class action.

The government of course does not like you to use cash as it is impossible to completely track it (yet). However, seigniorage rights are a big deal and they can't relinquish their currency monopoly without allowing for payment in, say, gold.

Ironically, almost all electronic payments incur a fee paid to one of the credit card companies by the merchant. Yet you can't buy a car with a credit card (at least in my state) because the car dealers don't want to pay a fee to the credit card companies.

Finally, I would note that the cash economy is not going away. In countries where the banking system is known to be insolvent, cash rules. Japan, for example. Europeans love their euros because it prevents their governments from stealing their savings...as has long been past habit in countries like Italy. Sadly, the euro is doomed precisely because governments like Italy love to steal from their citizens by printing their own notes.

Yea I can relate. U got to pay the cashier and pull out a $100 bill and they just look at it with this dumb ass face. Like its alien currency, and than look around like you just pulled your dick out and were trying to hand it to them... Then they tell you "I cant take that"... "Well.. that's all I got so your SOL", , right? Im a cash only kinda guy. Ive never had credit cards or plastic money of anykind. I dont even like to keep large sums of money in the bank. My logic growing up was who needs credit, when you got cash. As I get older, I'm starting to realize credit is just as important for those larger purchases
;)

I usually carry upto $1k on me mostly large bills, whatever will fit in my wallet, if I can. People wonder why do I carry so much money on me, well, bc I can. Ive been broke and Ive been paid, if I wanna keep cash on hand, its none of your damn business, and why are you counting my pocket anyway? Worry about your own.
Sorry for that little rant.

If the total is less than 20 bucks, I'll ask first if they can break a 100.

I got options, but I would take exception if told to go to the ATM, lol.

You'd be surprised how well received your cash is, if you ask first.

40 bucks for lunch for two? Yup.

Back in 1996, lol.

:)

I was joking around, i appreciate you clarify because what i had imagined was something else. that you might havr had wads of 100s, makes me think about it, that i had an erroneous perception. If you have one 100' there are bigger chances that you have a lot of them i guess.

Even if you had lots of money, its a right. I dont feel resentful towards the rich at this time.

It depends on the days I guess, i know i can be happy for people, sometimes i am frustrated/tired, and i think i have become envious of rich people. For me, prosperity is not making 100 000+ a year. For me at this time is 40000-60000$ Tbh, i made around 12000-14000 last year, but i had some school courses also so was not working fulltime. Some are making 100-200gs.

I d rather spend my energy towards money than cultivating that kind of feeling.

Might as well be productive. And i can fill with my needs with my salary, but its with surprise financial needs that you can have problems.

Eating as much as you want, with quality food, buying some new clothes, bedsheets, some decent housing. Being able to pay the dentist. Being able to buy yourself a new pair of shoes. I think its not too much to ask, being able to become an owner at some point if youd like.

Money is not everything i know, there are some jobs i might not be willling to do for that amount of money.

Nobody but the exchangers would accept ANY US money in China.

A "dirty old"hundred dollar bill was rejected in Vietnam where they are happy to accept us dollars, just not old ones.

Was given a hard time in Taiwan, no problem at all in Malaysia, Hong Kong, S Korea ( lol which is more western anyway ) .

Back in the day all I would keep on me were $100's. Someone in Brooklyn gave me a few counterfeit $20's and I folded them up and put them in my wallet. This is circa 1980. Was in southern NJ a week or so later and stopped to get gas and they would not take my $100 bill, the bright young attendant told me his boss told him that most of them were fake! Asked me if I had anything smaller and I must admit I paid for my gasoline with the fake 20's. He seemed happy and I certainly had no problem with dat! :)

Was quite the surprise when traveling to have any denomination rejected because it wasn't in pristine condition. I had to go through several 5s and 10s until bills were accepted in se asian countries that otherwise happily accepted us currency.

No problem in moving "benjamins" here in So Kali. BTW, paying your electric bill at those utility bill payment places is great way to move a stack or two without any "bank trail".
