Outdoor weed associated with "pine taste"

I've heard from several people (who in my opinion don't know anything about cannabis) that outdoor weed often has a pine taste to it. They'll try to act like a cannabis connoisseur and ask if it's outdoor weed because it has a pine taste to it.

Any basis for this assumption or purely urban myth?

the taste has 90% to do with the genetics and 10% environmental factors...

that's BS, the haze pheno of fighting buddha i grew out (indoors/400w) had the strongest most distinct pine flavor i've ever tasted........u should educate your friends whether they like it or not

in the north east, when we get outdoors... they tend to have a piny taste / smell... and if they are bad outdoors, they don't...
not saying all good outdoors are piney, but the ones we pick up in this section of the country are.

but anyways, i know outdoors from indoors by look... not taste or smell.

Tons of bagseed I've grown out has a piney smell to it. Some of those dropped nanners once due to a timer failure crossing with my Lifesaver leaving me with tons of seeds... that I grew out of course. Many of them have a piney smell to them. Some more than others.

Nah, I just wanted to make sure I was right. If I tried to undercut their "expertise", I might end up saying more than I should. I feed off of knowing I'm better than them without having to prove it.

I've noticed a good amount of outdoor I've got had a definatley pine taste. Then again I've gotten a good amount with no pine taste at all. I don't think they're connected at all...I just think the US gets a ton of outdoor purple pineberry from canada during harvest season lol.

the outdoor that would come out here in massive quantities would smell almost neutral in the bag, but when you broke it down to the stem, a strong sweet smell was released. came from humboldt as far as i know.

If they let it go late into the season it has a very DARK purple color to it sometimes due to cold. Other than that, how the F can you tell?

Ditto on that. I've had a few happy (or unhappy rather) accidents with an Affi - the offspring have had a number of piney phenos.

i've grown alot of strains and plants outdoors and have only had a couple smell piney and that was bagseed....i haven't had 1 piney smelling or tasting strain in the last 5-6 yrs i've ordered or made my own seeds. i don't like piney, some people like it but i don't find it tasty compared to fruity,sour, skunky, ect...so i stay away from anything that might be piney that might be the reason none of mine turn out piney.....so your friends theory is shot down.

it's pretty easy to tell indoor from outdoor grown weed, outdoor just has a different all around look then indoor grown buds, they have a rougher/tougher look to them probably from fighting the great outdoors their whole lives. it's kinda hard to explain but easy to see.

if you've grown a fair amount of both indoor and outdoor it should be pretty easy to tell the difference.
