Outdoor 2010 - from scratch

Hi everyone,

Newbie here. I tried a little grow last year ('09), didn't work out too well due to some problems with light pollution and a late start, but it definitely had it's moments.
As I've been out of [decent] work for over two years now, own pretty much nothing besides some dried food, some camping equipment, 40 Cannabis seeds and a piss-poor credit rating, I'm looking at going pretty much all out in '10.

So without further ado, here is quick outline of my plans, as they stand:

1. locate a nice spot

My main considerations here are:
a) security - I don't want to get shot, I don't want to get arrested, I don't want to get ripped off.
b) growing season - It's got to be long enough that I can germ, clone, sex, and still have enough time to get some decent-sized plants before they flower.
c) soil, water, etc.

2. site-prep, clone production, etc.

I'd like to get the seeds started ASAP, at the lowest cost possible.
What I'm thinking of doing is setting up sort of an in-ground greenhouse type of thing, and then I'll need to do something to insulate it. Once it's warm enough outside, I'll also use this for cloning & sexing.

Security concerns aside, probably the largest obstacle I'm looking at right now is digging the holes, and amending the soil. I don't plan on growing anywhere with any clay soil, but for all of this to be worthwhile I'll need to do something to improve the soil, I'm sure. Right now I'm leaning toward coco-coir and organics, as almost anything else would just be too much to carry, but any advice in this area would be ... welcome.

3. grow, harvest, dry, pack it up and head home! (or somewhere else, at least)

I'll probably set up camp somewhere a couple miles off-site. I'd like to get off of the ground if possible. If I could get a little fishing in that would be nice, too. Otherwise most of my time will probably be spent watching the plants.
While that promises to be a challenge in and of itself, it will probably be the most straightforward aspect of the entire operation, and undoubtably the most enjoyable.

Well ...that's it, in a nutshell! Thoughts, questions, comments?
I'm hoping to get this rough idea refined a bit, any help would be appreciated.

I'm considering an autoflower strain for this application now, which I'm thinking would work well with the coco. Have any of you outdoor growers had any experience with either, or vice-versa?

If you dont have much cash id forget the autos for now. They are good for a early harvest but if you have some extra cash laying around I suggest you use it to buy some fem full season plants instead.

I donno, I could get 50 SS#1 for around $125 and then run a few for seed. That sounds like a plan to me.

I'm not trying to be a dick, I'm just thinking here. I'll have pictures maybe in a few months.

PlEasE COME VISIT ME aT MY JOURNaL!!!

Im just saying dont waste time on money (ie containers, soil, nutes, and effort of bringing it all to the site) on plants that will be half male and females that will yield 2 zips max. Max out of those 50 short stuffs you are going to yield 50 ounces, more likely it will be half that or less. For that same 125 bucks you could buy some fem seeds that will each yield a pound, and you wont have to waste time worrying about males. seems like a no brainer to me.

Ive ran the autos before and will again, but i wouldn't bet my season on them.

I'm hoping for one zip/plant, so I'm looking at maybe 25z's. The plan is not to get rich, it's just to have enough.
That's not to say I'm against running anything for a full season, if I found a really primo spot I do have some HGS NL#5 F2's (or whatever), it would really nice if I could run a few of them but I do have fairly limited resources, yes.
Thanks for the suggestion though, and I will keep an eye out for a spot like that, fo' sho!

chicken shit!? Really? I've heard chicken shit is the worst shit.. Really high Nit. that can fry your girls?

I'd like to run with pure coco, I'm trying to work out something with an underground resevoir, an earth wick, and some kind of drainage, but if that doesn't work out I could run a soil mix, it's something to fall back on, and it probably wouldn't be half bad, either.

its great stuf.
what you mean is the fresh shit.
before using it you have to composed it first for about 1 jear.
and its has not onley ni,it has the ful spectrum of npk and micro-organism.

Assuming your going to be camping most of the time. One of the things i have learned from backpacking a lot is to travel as light as possible.

Don't use toilet paper, just use leaves.
Instead of a full size shovel use a collapsible military shovel
Don't bring a gun. 1 if you do get caught nothing will look worse in court then having a gun. and 2 if i saw a guy just passing though my property i'd just let him pass on though, but if he had a gun i would defiantly confront him and wonder wtf hes doing on my property with a gun.
If you want to do some fishing, Maine has some awesome trout fishing, a low population and you can grow up to 100 plants and its only a class D misdemeanor. Just watch out for slugs up there, they'll wipe out your sprouts.

ChICKEN SHIT IS THE BEST SHIT!!!!Pot loves chicken shit, you jsut have to have a light hand if its right outta the houses or fresh liter. The best thing to do is til it in bout a month before if its fresh and let it cool off but a good bucket of chicken shit tilled into your hole will keep your plants deep green and booming all year!!

And as for the auto's I would tank that idea for all the work you are talking about doing. You will be lucky to get half a pound if you start with 50 because a lot of them wont get enuff light or to much water or not enuff get stressed and be about the size of a wild daisy without enough meat on their bones to make a good joint when it dries!!!

Don't use blood and bone outside. The critters will dig it up everytime. If soil has clay you can still use it, just mix in some rice hulls. They really work to loosen the soil, and are natural. Much cheaper than cocoa. You indicated that you had the ability to sex and clone. Buy a pack or two of some seads that will finish in your area. Generally, you can add a week or so to what the seed vendor says is the finish time. If you get started now, you can have about however many plants that you need to meet your target. Lots of outdoor grows here but dont know how many people just camped out in the bush with their girls. Sounds like fun. Good luck on project

doesnt 3-4 full sized plants sound alot smarter that 25 little ones? your taking a much bigger chance and probably looking at way more time for multiple plants than 4 spaced out.

you can get a 10pk of any nirvana fem seeds for less than $8-9 a seed. white rhino, white widow, snow white; all are big producers of very fine herb. easy to grow and low maintence.

good luck on your 2010 season

Yea if anything i would stay clear of the autoflowering strains, tho i can understand you want to get out of there early and not using autoflower means you have to stay there all summer. But still; do not use autoflowering strains, they are low yielding, not very potent(tho i have only tried indoor autoflowering weed) and they are an abomination!! Evil i tell you!

Seriously tho; go for the real deal, buy your seeds now, germ, sex and start getting the cloning right. And i do feel for you man, i've been in your situation aswell, no money, no food, no nothing except a pissload of debt, now i own a house, car and shit is working out. Stay focused and safe!!

If thats your plan noob, forget it. It sucks. You're going to spend a lot of time, money, and effort and go through a lot of hardship for a lousy 25 zs? How many zs do you need to sell? How many will you keep? Will the end profits justify your time and expenese? If no then it would not be worth it to me.

First off your strain is all wrong. You can't clone autos at all. Any cut you take will be flowering and probably very small. It wont grow out to reach the size of the mother because it won't veg. You want to clone? Buy femmed beans and veg them before cloning. These may not yield as much as the fully vegged mom, but still, you can make up the yield with numbers. You'll never do that with autos.

Second your approach is all wrong. If you are going to live on site more or less, why dig some way too eloborate and convoluted set up? It is also overkill for those little auto plants, and you could risk over watering them. Grow in raised beds instead, easier to construct if you use that black sediment retention shit you see at construction sites that keep all the loose dirt from washing away. Just use water crystals if you don't wanna hand water daily.

Lastly, if you're gonna do this for money, MAXIMIZE YOUR INVESTMENT. You're going into the woods or whatever for god knows how long, and you're looking to come home with a two week paycheck while leaving the rest of the years wages behind. Why are you so set on autos, living on site you could grow longer flowering strains veg em and clone em then flower them early with a black out tent or something, if pressed for time. If money is tight, why waste it on fox farms and coir? You can get the same results with compost, bat and sea bird guano, and compost teas all on the cheap side. Spend more of your money on seeds, those are what's gonna pay the bills. Fuck fox farm if you have limited resources. Don't spend more on nutes than seeds, especially low yielding ones and males at that. Get femmed seeds and accept no substitutes.

Ain't trying to be harsh on you, but I'm planning an early spring grow myself. And if all I had was your plan I would forget it. Sure my plans have a few weak spots I'm trying to shore up, but they are more solid and profitable than yours. I'm just giving you a few pointers that could make your grow earn more money and smoke. Hey aint that what we all want at the end of the season? Don't give up, refine your plan a little more.

Ok Sanchez what DC said has truth. Harsh? maybe but also informative. You simply cannot clone autos, time+ money invested far exceed your projected return. Sounds like your in a situation that could benefit extremely from a succesful crop and not afford to lose out. Take the constructive criticism and try to learn something, That's what were here for. Growth. So listen up when you ask questions. These people have more experience and speak for a reason not just to belittle a stranger on the Internet. Maybe they're selflessly providing information by taking time out of their day to help a brother out hoping to prevent you from making beginner mistakes and leading you twards success. Take it all in. Listen and learn or have fun trying to clone autos in your treefort newb! Jk but no really you can't clone autos. There... I feel much better :)

I don't know where darby got that, that I wanted to clone AFs. I did say something about growing a few out for seed but I wasn't even considering AFs when I started the thread. Thanks for taking his side tho! :ban:
