what is the main argument for statement that consciousness is fundamental cosmic phenomenon, and not the result of neurologic processes?
Grof: Very little of people know, even very little of scientists, and realize that we have no real proof, that consciousness has its origin in a brain. what we have is big amount of observations, which show systematic corelations among anatomy, physiology, biochemistry of a brain and states of consciousness. but in reality, nothing from it proves that consciousness originates in a brain. I give you example with television, where I see similar type of connection. the quality of certain broadcasting critically depends on functionality of components which makes together any broadcasting possible. in reality, we would laugh on somebody, who tries to explore those components onto molecular level, and believes, that he will find the reason why every morning at 7 a. m. we can see Mickey Mouse. all we have are proofs of corelations, but not that consciousness is the result of a brain. there is possibilty that brain can play important role, but in my experiences it is more role of transmission, mediating role and not creative role.
