Organics for mites

I use this product from KIS (the compost tea brewer folks).

$13.99 for 1 lb. and the suggested application rate (foliar) is 1.5 tsp. to 1 gallon of water. This amount weighs about 4.5 grams meaning that you get 100 gallons of seaweed extract for $.14 per gallon.

Pretty expensive stuff, eh? LMAO

Seriously - this is a top of the line product. And it's actually about 40% less than Maxicrop's dry seaweed extract powder that you'll find at mainstream nurseries.

Good stuff!

thanks kindly again CC

That -is- kind of pricey for some hulabaloo isn't it? ;) Should be able to get some soon.

Going both routes on the lavender, buying some plants and sprouting some as well. I just can't not grow my own if possible. :D

blind hogs? LOL sight don't matter when finding treasures located by smell. ;)

shhhh.... shut up! I can't see!

simply take some lavender sprigs( sticks with flower buds on them) and strip the flower buds off. take a 1 liter bottle, add a 1/4 cup or so of lavender flower buds. let soak for 48 hours, then strain the plant material out well. dilute 1:50 and spray your plants lightly on infected areas, make sure to get under the leaves. repeat in 5 days. so far everyone i have told it to and has tried it has had success in killing mites, coot said even the eggs die which is pretty cool.

What's that ? One part lavender water - 50 parts plain water ?
Sry for my confusion :shucks:

When looking at a dilution rate of say 1:50 here's how I was taught to convert that into something that makes sense.

There are 128 ounces in 1 gallon of liquid. This number is rounded off to 125 to make the math easier I guess.

1 gallon = 256 tablespoons = 750 teaspoons.

If you divide the '50' into 750 you come up with 15 which is the number of teaspoons in a 1:50 dilution rate. There are 3 teaspoons in each tablespoon (which is 1/2 ounce) so 15 teaspoons would be 5 tablespoons which would be 1/4 cup (which is 4 tablespoons) + 1 tablespoon = 5 tablespoons or 2.5 ounces.

That will give you your 1:50 dilution ratio.

If it were 1:125 then you'd be looking at 6 teaspoons which is 2 tablespoons which is 1 ounce.

SSM it's for a friend. I told him what to get and have no idea where he bought the stuff, sorry. Knowing the guy i could hazard a guess and say he googled it and bought it from the first web site that popped up.

CC - Appreciate your time doing that for me :respect:

I just re-read my post and I made things WAY too complicated. Let's try it this way......

1 gallon = 125 ounces (in this scenario - the actual number is 128 ounces)

1 gallon = 250 tablespoons

1 gallon = 750 tablespoons

That's easy enough. If you have a dilution rate of 1:50 then simply divide the '50' into one of the numbers above.

1:50 = 2.5 ounces
1:50 = 5 tablespoons
1:50 = 15 teaspoons

Sorry for any confusion.

does the lavendar dilute work on any other pests? ie. gnats?
I've used it on other's gardens for both mites and gnats.

A friend in the Southwest who battles white flies found it to be effective as well though he was far more dubious than I was.

A source, perhaps, for fresh lavender flowers is through a local flower market (wholesale). Almost all cities of any size/consequence have a commercial wholesale flower market where the local florists buy their plant material. Often these are adjacent to the local produce district.

Baring that, dried lavender flowers (organic food grade) are easily sourced at a billion web sites. Prices vary so do some homework.

Peeps around here use a lot of lavender in landscaping and yeah the farmer's market is stocked full of lavender then also some farms where you can go pick in certain areas. I've got a few bunches of dried flowers in my place and like to sprinkle some lavender essential oil on them now and then to revivify them a bit.

As for a direct source you might try Liberty Natural Products in Oregon as I know they maintain their own farms and are certified by OTCO. Most of it goes into essential oil production I think but seems they stock dried flowers 'in season'. I'm fortunate in that I can collect it from a few different neighbors.

There's actually a few varieties and most of what I've seen available seems to be a higher producing varietal but not the most fragrant both in intensity or quality. I'm guessing it's the essential oil content that's a major contributing factor to lavender's effectiveness for mites and other pests...similar to what's in a product called Pest Out but this also has veggie oil to smother eggs I guess like End-All. Lavender grows like a weed with little care required.

Liberty Natural Products is a couple of miles down the road - great folks and an incredible line of extracts, botanicals, etc.

Another good source out of Eugene, Oregon is Mountain Rose Herbs and they have smaller packs on many items whereas Liberty Natural has sizes that may be too much for some folks. Like powdered Yucca root extract - not many people would have a need for 5 lbs.

Liberty Natural was where I first purchased lavender a few months back - I got a paint bucket full for $5.00 as these were not the prime flowers for market.

They were still shaking their heads when I left after telling them what I intended to do with the lavender.

"Insecticide? Seriously?" - chorus of laughter followed.

The lavender extract i made with french variety worked wonders on my seedling thankyou very much!

I have new fronts opened up now. A cucumber vine i have in a hanging basket and a wong bok going to seed in same... the extract has slowed em down some but they are still hanging around!

Time to break out the heavy guns.... neem oil/seaweed/aloe vera soap + the lavender extract spray should do the trick! Bit too strong to be used on my babies.

You get the 'double whammy' with lavender as you do with neem oil, i.e. it's both an effective pesticide and as well as a fungicide (powdery mildew, etc.)

Not bad for something you brew for a few hours, eh?

Yeah its awesome stuff alright.

I can confirm however it doesnt affect aphids. The lavender that is.

Neem works very well.

Some people that I know (i.e. I wouldn't necessarily call them either friends or associates) are wanting to bring a neem and karanja oil product to market and I've been helping them as far as sourcing neem oil from trees grown in the USA.

I've applied their neem/karanja oil mix 3 times so far (1 oz. to 1 gallon of water) using soap nut meal as the emulsifier and both aloe vera juice and yucca root extract for the surfactant deal.

Pretty impressive results so far. Quite nice actually.

lmao you think

i prefer to just eyeball it. 1:50 isnt the 100% answer. that was just a guesstimate to give everyone who likes to measure some ballpark. simply making a dilute solution works wonders.

"Over Medicated" - the local buzzword for being stoned.

LMAO

CC

Yup, over medicated, but I did not buy it, I had to offer donations for it.

Funny how the buzz words creep in, I'm no longer an old stoner, I'm a patient that enjoys alternative medications :dance013:
