Fred, 24-36 hrs is a good ballpark. There are some caveats to that but for the sake of keeping things simple, 24-36 hrs.

They go bad when they go anaerobic, after 5-6 hrs without aeration they're a no go so that's the most obvious way. Dump it on some plants outside. There are other ways for them to go 'bad', ie; loss of diversity.
bubbler is workin fine but it got down to high 50's last night and my tea doesnt have any film on it..i put a heatin pad under it a while ago and will see what happens...from what i've read there should be some slime on top...what do ye think?

one more question..how long, after i give plants microbial tea, should i wait to feed an alfalfa and molasses tea?..does it matter?...next watering?

what is the ideal number of days to brew these teas and if they go bad will it be obvious?

It also takes longer when it's cold. Average is about 40°F here at the moment, using near freezing rain water it took 5 days for my last tea to froth up. I gave it another tbs of molasses on the 4th day to make sure there was still plenty of food available for the little guys.

so the tea is really no good til it froths up?

Good morning folks, wake and bake and tea time. :sasmokin:

here's how to brew an effective tea.

Fill a 5 gallon bucket with water and use an airstone connected to an air pump to aerate the water for 24hrs, this will evaporate any traces of chlorine in the water wich can kill beneficial bacteria.

Ingredients (these are for 4 gallons of water)
This is a base tea, you can water with this every watering.

4TBS of worm castings
4TBS of molasses
1-2TBS lquid seaweed
2TBS of liquid karma (optional, substitute for humic or fulvic acids)

To feed the plants you add to your base tea:

2-3TBS of either high N or P guano

I don't use a cloth bag to hold the solid ammendments, I just dump everything in because I find it brews much better and the solids have a better contact and surface area with the rest of the brew.
The only drawback to the "no pouch method" is it can clog you airstone, what I do is keep the airstone suspended as opposed to sitting on the bottom.
Once everything is setup and the ingredients are brewing keep it bubbling for 24-48hrs loosely covered in a dark place, after 2 days you should have foam at the top.
Use guanos only when you want to give them a boost and not everytime as guano is high release, I use guano once high N in veg and 3-4 times during flowering, the rest of the time just use the basic elements and skip the guano.

:woohoo: post #500
i see that you said to brew tea for 24-48 hours so thats what i'll do...most of what i've read says dont use after 36 hrs..

Here is my tried tested and true recipe, a soil mix is alot like cooking, the fun is dialing in the recipe.
I like this mix because it is simple, cheap to make, and relatively complete even without the use of teas at least for awhile.

back to business..

60% ProMix HP + Mike
30% perlite
10% worm castings for micros and BB

To each gallon of this mix I add:

2 TBS/gal dolomite lime
1 TBS/gal blood meal
2 TBS/gal bone mean for P (flowering mix only)
1 TBS/gal kelp meal

The most important step is now to compost your soil mix for 2 weeks before using it, you want to wet the mix to create an environment where the beneficials in the soil start munching on the soil elements and creating a stable environment with some nutes ready to go for a well rooted clone.
I use LiquidKarma for a wetting mix @ 1TBS per gallon (some B1 goods right there ), as instructed by the wise ones.

I use Mike with every transplant, i transplant 3 times and flower in 5 gallon pails.
I feed a microbial tea every watering with no nutes just EWC, LK, and molasses, to me this is a base.
I use a stong N tea once towards end of veg and a strong P tea about 3 weeks into flowering every 2nd or 3rd watering until about 10 days before harvest.
I use liquid seaweed lightly and regularly as K is essential throughout and as a bonus over other mineral sources of K kelp is rich in growth hormone and micros.

I'll get to teas in the morning, i'll be here waking and baking.
Pimp your mixes.

when you refer to a strong nitrogen tea towards the end of veg, exactly what are you talkin about?...and also a strong p tea about 3 wks into flowering?...i know it's some form of guano but want to be sure..

It's pretty straight forward, a strong N tea (ie; more N food than usual) at the end of veg. A strong P tea is good in week 3 cuz most strains have stopped their vegetative stretch growth and are starting to pack on pistils and bud sites. It doesn't have to be some form of guano by any means, any quality P source will do.

Fred, fwiw all your answers can be found in the Organics for Beginners thread, I assure ya.

every tea that i read about has got liquid karma, ewc, mexican guano or peruvian seabird guano...a few days ago i didnt have any of these items and now i've got em all..gettin ready for the resurrection!!...rasputin,you have been most helpful...YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEHA UNCLE JED!

Just thought I'd say Hi to those that remember me as Pyrex (Von, Subs, and Jay) and as well to those who dont. Still organic and back at it again.......just can't help myself. Been a long time off but always feel a special kinship to the organic folks.

dr von,if liquid karma and molasses are about the same thing, why would suby use both of em in his tea?

First, this was written several years ago..........when we all started working with LK.

Now read the following......

Liquid KarmaTM contains seven (7) major groups of nutrients based on their specific effects on plant growth and development:

A. Fermented Compost Solution - prepared by exhaustive bacterial and enzymatic fermentation of fish meal, composted seabird guano, spirulina, sea kelp, and soybean meal. In order to enhance the fermentation process and obtain a product which contains the highest possible biological activity, the fermentation is carried out in different stages in the presence of humic acid, citric acid, raw sugar cane, complex carbohydrates, glucose fructose and over 72 trace elements. Fermented Compost Solution prepared in this manner is used by an increasing number of organic gardeners to obtain luxuriant vegetative growth, huge flowers and flavorful fruits and vegetables.

B. Amino Acids - Liquid Karma contains essential amino acids which are derived from casein hydrolysate and soybean protein hydrolysate. Amino acids are important plant nutrients because they serve as building blocks for structural proteins and enzymes. In addition, amino acids are also involved in the activation of transfer ribonucleic acids (t-RNAs) and DNA synthesis. The following amino acids derived from casein hydrolysate and soybean protein, are present in Liquid Karma: glycine, alanine, valine, leucine, isoleucine, serine, threonine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid, aspartic acid, glutamic acid, asparagine, glutamine, lysine, arginine, histidine, cysteine, cystine, methlonine, proline, phenylalanine, tyrosine, and tryptophan.

C. Vitamins - All of the vitamins used in this formulation are extremely beneficial for plant growth because they function as co-factors for enzymes involved in carbohydrate metabolism and the biosynthesis of macromolecules. Liquid KarmaTM contains significant amounts of riboflavin, thiamine, pyridoxine, and all of the other B-complex vitamins obtained from fermented yeast extracts.

D. Plant Extracts - Liquid KarmaTM also contains aqueous and ethanolic extracts of etiolated wheat seedlings and Zea mays. These extracts contain high levels of the plant hormones known as auxins and cytokinins. For successful plant micropropagation (tissue culture), the crucial requirements for an auxin and cytokinin are well documented in botanical literature. An example of the beneficial effects of using Liquid KarmaTM in tissue culture is shown in Figure 1.

E. Humic Acid - In addition to the ingredients indicated above, Liquid Karma contains optimal levels of humic acid derived from leonardite. This substance is known to stimulate the growth of roots, shoots and flowers, by maintaining the proper osmotic concentration in cells.

F. Seaweed Extract - Liquid KarmaTM also contains a high proportion of seaweed extract obtained from North Atlantic Kelp (Ascophyllum nodosum). Kelp extract contains metabolically active carbohydrates, complex carbohydrates, minerals such as cobalt, strontium and iodine, and growth substances that are known to be beneficial for plant growth.

G. Carbohydrates - Carbohydrates are included in Liquid KarmaTM because they are the direct or indirect precursors of virtually every metabolite. Their precense provides the added burst of energy required to assimilate and metabolize all of the other wonderful ingredients present in Liquid KarmaTM.

The seven nutrient groups used in the formation of Liquid KarmaTM act synergistically to produce optimal plant growth.

What is in there?

We use EWC........

1. Fermented Compost Solution.....covered in the EWC (home made)
2. 72 trace elements...found in Kelp meal

see where I am going with this?

If you build your soil accordingly.........with the proper ingredients.......you do not need 20.00 a bottle LK.

Now most importantly.......your question......why is Molasses and LK very similar

and what do they offer in common?

Carbohydrates to feed the bacterial populations in the tea or soil.

so ewc and molasses is all ye need?....what if anything would you use liquid karma for?

Fred...

Don't get upset. Liquid Karma, if you do enough research, is really something that you can EASILY make yourself. After all, Botanicare had to make it from something, didn't they??

There are many things that are to a certain degree VERY interchangeable...

However, if you decide to add beneficial bacteria, molasses and a bit of kelp and EWC, you are making the very same thing that LK adds to your medium. The major difference, is that for most growers, LK is much easier to get and therefore a more simplistic route. However, given enough consideration to what is the most cost effective way to grow your own medicine, well, you find you can do the very same thing yourself with a little bit of research and dedication.

My point is not to imply that LK is not worth it's weight in gold. For a very long time it was my own personal "magic" in my garden. Then I got educated. Realized they made it and they make it for the purpose of profit. And much like anything else, I began to understand if I was diligent and truly wanted the best possible cannabis, I could make the same thing myself ....CHEAPER.

Fred, there are many things you need. I build my soil so most of the ingredients in LK are in my soil. EWC is one if not the most important ingredient to have.

If you read te first part of the OFC we came to the same conclusion as NSPB.....we were attempting to replicate LK which most of us did in our own way with local or home made products.

As with all bottled nutrients......it is convenient to get and easy to use.....for those who know no better. But as you realize how easy it is to make your own you will ten ween yourself from the bottled nutrients and graduate to the next level.

That is why we are here......that is why we started the OFC. We as a collective educated each other to the next level.......much the same as you are doing now.

Start building your soil also. Rock powders, fresh compost, fresh EWC. Try and get as much diversity in the soil so you will not be dependent on bottled nutrients. We have all grown this way in the past.

Welcome to the club.
