Op's on placing ballasts in the attic

EZB you had the most interesting info of all,a point I made earlier in a different life.If you have high wattage HID's in a relatively small area relocating the ballasts will not result in a decrease in temps. They are hot to the touch, but hold your hand six inches away and tell me how hot they are, there is practically zero radiant heat unlike the lamps.I think the only true advantage would be having extra space for the girls. In my case and I bet most others, being able to control temps with airconditioning is a lot more important than having 1K ballasts in the grow area.
LOL! All these voices from the past, including my own! I have been taking temp readings for the last 3 days and see no change. I surely remember the advice that moving them would not make much of a change. They really weren't taking up any space and will most likely end up back where they were. Where I can keep an eye on them! My 10 by 10 room temps are only 5 or so degrees above outside temps, so I figure I have the lights & room vented well. Still at 85 degrees for a majority of the day & at 35 days into flower it's got me nervous. I have a window ac ready to go but not sure how to best cool & keep the air fresh. I just realized I have to haul my lazy ass up into the attic, again! LOL :bat:

Have to go with MTF-SANDMAN on this. I have had 2 1000w ballasts in the attic for years and no problem . And I'm in a area that has 100 + temps for weeks in the summer time. Hell today it was in the upper 80's. And they call this March.

Peace

Si.

You should be fine to run ballasts in the attic. A fan might not be a bad idea though... I keep one on my 150w HPS ballast. 150w ballast might not sound like a lot compared to your 1000w, but let me tell you, it still gets to hot to the touch...If there is no fan on it.

I watched the temps before and after I moved them into the attic. I saw no temp differences over 3 days. So I moved them back. Hey I figured every little bit helps and it was worth a try.
I'll have to run the AC soon. so it won't matter.

Since moving the ballasts "back" into the room two days ago. I see no real increase in temps. Just a degree or two, well worth being able to keep an eye on them. Now the room is 10 by 10' with the ballasts in the closet. If the room was smaller, the heat from the ballasts could be be an issue.
