They had a search warrant, if he hadn't opened it, they simply would have had a locksmith open it-- Possibly having to ruin it in the process--:tiphat:

depends on the particulars in the warrant
probably no benefit to opening it up voluntarily, that only helps the police

i'd agree that a safe isn't a good shield against a warrant
but the legalities are complicated, and cooperation seems to buy you nothing(edit: value of safe, not much imo)
it certainly wasn't a good place for his stash, though we'll see how it plays out
