Off the shelf retail store screw-in LED and CFL bulb comparisons

This is a good idea. Although this thread taught me everything I know so far, it is listed under "micro grows" and people who don't grow in small cabinets likely don't even know this exists. More visibility and wider input among growers could prove interesting.
I'm not sure why this thread hasn't been made a sticky in all these years, but it remains active because we have no other place to talk about these "secrets".

It's really hilarious on Reddit. I keep posting cola photos and saying this was grown under regular everyday household LED light bulbs. And 100% of the time, the response is "BS! No way! Are you stupid?". I get down voted like crazy. Then I post a pic showing the lights in the photo with the plants, and it's like "OMG WTF!?! I couldn't believe it, but you're right! I'm really sorry for not believing you." Then all the people who down voted me, up-vote. Hahaha!

Where on Reddit? Microgrowery? A lot of SIL growers there.

/r/microgrowery is a terrible place full of arrogant growers with some experience who are decent, but think they know everything and if you do anything differently than they do you just get downvoted. the rest of the sub is really inexperienced growers who think they know what they're talking about because they read it somewhere, despite having no actual, tangible experience to pull from.

honestly, do yourself a favor and just go there for the pictures. i don't suggest trying to contribute much, half the time when you say something correct you just get downvoted by the ignorant masses.

No, just canadagrows, cannabiscultivation, and canadients so far. The only SIL growers I've seen posts from on the subject is here, but it's not like I've been looking for them. The reaction so far has been interesting!

r/microgrowery: where know-it-all second time growers talk down to first timers

So I checked out microgrowery, and the first thing I noticed was some poor guy asking if they could use regular light bulbs not meant for growing plants and he gets immediately down voted like crazy. Then another guy replies "Because they’re not meant for growing.", and he gets 27 up-votes in 10 minutes! What a laugh!

Anyway, my girls are really growing up and one of the plants will likely be ready within the week - the other 3 plants at least 2 weeks. Here's a photo of the one nearly ready:

I decided to take a photo just after the lights went out:

Very interesting thread, I've been using household CFL's for veg but it seems like I'll have to make the switch to LED when these bulbs run out of juice. Thank you to all that have provided the information for all the utilize :)

Super Skunk - Sensi Seeds - 51 days flower chop. I got a work assignment at the beginning of the year out of town so I had to cut it earlier. Pic was taken 6th Jan. It could have gone on 2 more weeks or so due to stress even though on website they say 45-50 days for flowering... but anyways... acceptable high and smell.. it will do for the next weeks. Got a new seed in germination and I hope for better results next time.

Peace and happy growing for all! :tiphat:

:woohoo:

if i may, lumens is a measurement of light at the source only. it has no relation to a measurement of light at the target.

The light required to light 1 meter, to the level of 1 lux, is 1 lumen.

This is a foot candle

It's not as useful

I have to say I really like coming on here to read some stuff and actually learning.

I am going to have to put this info to use. Thx Blynx!

Wow, this thread has been such an eye-opener and super informative, I´ve read the whole thing over the last few weeks. This thread convinced me (as a first time grower) not to go with the 200 watt CFL-growlight that I already have and instead go get me some screw in leds! Since I have zero experience growing I would love to get some input on my lighting set-up.

I have a 2x2x4 grow tent inside a pretty big walk-in closet. I´m thinking of going with a total of:

85W (7430 lm)

22,4W/sqft consisting of:
5x9Watt (806lm per light) 2700K lights

4x10W (850lm per light) 6500K lights.

This would be my absolutely cheapest option at 36 dollars. Would that be OK you think? If I can yield around 40 grams per grow I´m very happy.

Are your eyes really open?
The thread recommends at least 30watts in flower,
which means 120watts for your space, leads to 3x3=9 of 15watt bulbs.
If you are smart with plant count, super cropping and all the other techniques a yield of 100g is of course achiveable.

Yes, my eyes are open. From somewhere in the thread I saved this quote from Terpene: 32w per sqft is as bright as I ever went and routinely burned plants when I was closer to the canopy than about 5-6 inches. Ive since flowered at 19w per sqft and then went a bit brighter to 25w per sqft. I think 25w is really about as bright as you need to be. 30w/sqft actual wattage used should be more than enough for any setup you want to run. Past that, you're primarily adding heat.

Sure, I understand 22,4w/sqft is on the low side, hence my question. But the thing is I actually don´t want too big of a yield since the laws in my country are kinda crazy. As mentioned, 40 grams would be good for me.
