George Obama, the half-brother of US President Obama was just arrested for possession of marijuana (bhang) in Kenya. Obama's brother lives in a slum in Nairobi and they have had little contact. George Obama was not invited to the inauguration of his brother.

Perhaps this event will take marijuana off the back burner for Pres. Obama and he'll finally do what his constituents have been demanding - decriminalize cannabis!

perhaps but mostly not, obama is famous for excommunicating members of his family he dosn't approve of. His brother looks wiser than he is, although his eyes are red you can see he is not a shallow person that barack has the look of.

Sounds like they are making an example of him due to whatever new found notoriety he has.

This is the report from webehigh.com about Nairobi, for some insight into how it goes down over there:

webehigh.com said:
Smoking tolerance level [1= very illegal 5=virtually legal]: 3

Legislation: very illegal, fines are high, due to anti corruption laws, they will make an example

It's technically illegal, but i smoked in broad daylight walking down the street. I personally would not suggest doing this unless you have cash, because Nairobi is very...not corrupt, but money minded, anywhere someone can make a few extra bucks, including cops, they will.

Law Enforcement: they are more concerned with arm car jackers then a bunch of pot heads, but don't blow smoke on the cops face, bad idea

ALWAYS carry some extra cash with you for bribes. If you are caught they will mess with you for a bit, but then just pull the head man aside and "settle" this problem.

Ask the main men at Nyari police sub-station, he he...bribes are on a sliding scale, if you seem rich,(mmm...white or indian) be ready to cough it up. a friend i know has paid as little as 200ksh 4$ to 15000ksh 250$ depending on how nasty or awesome the cops are!

must be weird for someone living in a 3rd world slum to have there half-brother as president of the richest country in the world even if they have little to no contact with one another.

Updated: February 2, 2009, 12:02 AM EST 2497 comments Olympic great Michael Phelps acknowledged "regrettable" behavior and "bad judgment" after a photo in a British newspaper Sunday showed him inhaling from a marijuana pipe.

PHOTO: Phelps smokes a bong You can't believe it, can you? Well believe it. There is an actual picture of Michael Phelps smoking a bong.

Of course, Phelps is just the latest in a long line of athletes caught in compromising marijuana situations. Check out sports' top tokers to relive all the glory of years past.

If you can pick your jaw up off the floor, you may also remember that once upon a time, Phelps dominated a historic Olympic Games. Check out the Top 10 performances from Beijing here. Want more? Here are the Top 10 choke jobs.
In a statement released to The Associated Press, the swimmer who won a record eight gold medals at the Beijing Games did not dispute the authenticity of the exclusive picture published Sunday by the tabloid News of the World.

"I engaged in behavior which was regrettable and demonstrated bad judgment," Phelps said in the statement released by one of his agents. "I'm 23 years old and despite the successes I've had in the pool, I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way, not in a manner people have come to expect from me. For this, I am sorry. I promise my fans and the public it will not happen again."

News of the World said the picture was taken during a November house party while Phelps was visiting the University of South Carolina. During that trip, he attended one of the school's football games and received a big ovation when he was introduced to the crowd.

While the newspaper did not specifically allege that Phelps was smoking pot, it did say the pipe is generally used for that purpose and anonymously quoted a partygoer who said the Olympic champion was "out of control from the moment he got there."

"He grabbed the bong and a lighter and knew exactly what to do," a witness said of the swimming superstar, according to the News of the World report.

"He looked just as natural with a bong in his hands as he does swimming in the pool. He was the gold medal winner of bong hits."

The party occurred nearly three months after the Olympics while Phelps was taking a long break from training, and his actions should have no impact on the eight golds he won at Beijing. He has never tested positive for banned substances. The case is unlikely to fall under any doping rules.

Phelps' main sanctions most likely will be financial — perhaps doled out by embarrassed sponsors who might be reconsidering their dealings with the swimmer.

The U.S. Olympic Committee said it was "disappointed in the behavior recently exhibited by Michael Phelps," who was selected the group's sportsman of the year. He also was honored as AP male athlete of the year, and his feat in Beijing — breaking Mark Spitz's 36-year-old record for most gold medals in an Olympics — was chosen as the top story of 2008.

"Michael is a role model, and he is well aware of the responsibilities and accountability that come with setting a positive example for others, particularly young people," the USOC said in a statement. "In this instance, regrettably, he failed to fulfill those responsibilities."

USA Swimming said its Olympic champions are "looked up to by people of all ages, especially young athletes who have their own aspirations and dreams."

"That said," the governing body added, "we realize that none among us is perfect. We hope that Michael can learn from this incident and move forward in a positive way."

Phelps was part of a group of elite athletes who agreed to take part in a pilot testing program designed to increase the accuracy of doping tests. His spot in the program could be at risk, said Travis Tygart, head of the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency.

"For one of the Olympics' biggest heroes it's disappointing, and we'll evaluate whether he remains in that program," Tygart said. "But some good education comes from this because he's going to suffer some penalties."

View more photos >>Marijuana is viewed differently from performance-enhancing drugs, according to David Howman, executive director of the World Anti-Doping Agency. An athlete is subject to WADA sanctions only for a positive test that occurs during competition periods.

"We don't have any jurisdiction," Howman said. "It's not banned out of competition. It's only if you test positive in competition."

Phelps returned to the pool a couple of weeks ago to begin preparations for this summer's world championships in Rome. He plans to take part in his first post-Olympics meet in early March, a Grand Prix event in Austin, Texas.

Phelps was in Tampa, Fla., during Super Bowl week to make promotional appearances on behalf of a sponsor. But he left the city before Sunday's game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Arizona Cardinals, abandoning his original plan to be at Raymond James Stadium.

This isn't the first embarrassing episode for Phelps after an Olympic triumph. In 2004, a few months after winning six gold and two bronze medals in Athens, the swimmer was arrested on a drunken driving charge at age 19. He pleaded guilty and apologized for the mistake.

In his book "No Limits: The Will to Succeed," Phelps recounted how his first phone call was to his agent, and not his mother or coach Bob Bowman, because he knew they would yell at him.

Later, he called Bowman, who was supportive but told him, "Michael, just because you want to blow off some steam doesn't mean you can be an idiot."

Debbie Phelps, his mother, cried at the news.

"That hurt worse, maybe, than anything," Phelps wrote. "I had never seen my mother that upset."

Bowman did not immediately respond to phone and e-mail messages Sunday.

Olympic teammate Dara Torres said Phelps has become such a prominent figure that everything he does is news.

However, she said: "This in no way shape or form diminishes anything he's done."

"It's sort of a double-edged sword," Torres told the AP on Sunday. "When you're recognizable, you're looked up to as a role model. He is recognizable and everything you do gets looked at and picked apart. I guess that's the price of winning 14 Olympic medals."

Jason Lezak, whose remarkable anchor leg of the 400-meter freestyle relay helped Phelps stay on course to break Mark Spitz's record in Beijing, said he was "saddened" to hear of the report.

"While I don't condone his conduct, I am a teammate and fan," Lezak said in a text message to the AP on Saturday night. "Unlike many fair-weather people, I am sticking by him. If my wife and I can help him in any way, we will. I believe he will grow from this and be better person, role model and teammate."

During the 1998 Nagano Olympics, Canadian snowboarder Ross Rebagliati was stripped of his gold medal in the giant slalom after testing positive for marijuana. The victory was reinstated because the sport's governing body did not have a rule banning the substance. Later that year, Olympic swimmer Gary Hall Jr. drew a three-month suspension after testing positive for pot.

"It's one of those substances that every year there's debate over it," said Howman, the WADA official.

The USOC's code of conduct only covers the period from when an athlete makes the Olympic team until the end of the games. But Howman suggested that U.S. swimming officials or the sport's world organization, FINA, could punish Phelps if there is "sufficient evidence to indicate possession, supply or distribution."

FINA officials said they would not comment on the matter until Monday, as did the International Olympic Committee.

"We have to be strong on these things," Howman said. "We certainly are relying on those who are responsible to look into this."

The USOC noted that Phelps acknowledged his mistake and apologized.

"We are confident that, going forward, Michael will consistently set the type of example we all expect from a great Olympic champion," the group said.

What sort of a token is this of Barack Obama's legacy regarding how he intends to deal with the huge disparity between the rich and poor of this world. Does he really love his neighbour as himself and what about his damn brother?! You were right when you said his brother George looks the better man...consider how the article went on to say how he is a humanitarian working with the youth of Nairobi and the poor guy was working for only around a dollar a day and living in the slum. What an outstanding individual to be giving of himself when he had so little to give!!! Which is the greater crime...George Obama smoking pot or Barack Obama's neglect of his own brother???

Perhaps.

Perhaps The Big Drug Companies will let that happen.

He's some food for thought. 1st, Why would Barack Obama do anything for MJ just because of his brother, Their not even close. The antics of a father with another women and shareing 1/2 the DNA don't really make you family. 2nd, everyone that's upset with the Michael Phelps picture. We know what the intent was, but if you study the picture closely. There's no smoke in the bong, that's circumstanstanial evidence. I wonder how much the Frat Brother got for selling him out?

I wonder how much the Frat Brother got for selling him out?

No doubt, no way to avoid these things with camera phones. I see both sides of the story first off its in his private life. Its not enough the guy was one of the few athletes that agreed to take piss test early and often to prove he was not a roider they have to hammer him for something that has nothing to with his occupation. Many of us on this forum have to feel for him in that respect.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" /><o:p></o:p>

On the other hand he makes big dollars on endorsements so he sold his ass to the man to put the big green in his hands. Live by the sword die by the sword. Endorsements equals’ life is public property.<o:p></o:p>

Yeah something isn't right about that picture.

Maybe Obama's a selfish SOB, would it surprise you? Supposedly he's known the whereabouts of his brother for a long time and that $1 a month can really help. Supposedly that's what Obama has been sending the guy, $1 a month. If you saw Obama's charitable donations over the past 10 years you wouldn't think the guy is too charitable. Interestingly, it's a lot less than he expects people to cough up to pay for social programs. Let me put it another way, if we assume Obama tithed to his largely racist church, which can be counted as charitable donations and reported on his taxes, it would mean he either gave his church very little to his church(far less than the standard 10%) and very little to charity. What I just said was a poor way of saying Obama has very low charitable donations on his taxes over the past 8 years, where those donations actually went aren't disclosed, but he's no giver.

I don't know where my edit button went. But I mean to also say, that since $1 is really helpful in his brother's country, it really surprises me he hasn't been getting something like $5 a month or so. How could you not afford $50 a year for a family member if it would change his life? That's what I don't get about Obama. Maybe he thought his brother would spent it on weed? :) Just kidding about that one. Just don't think Obama cared is all.

Some people are proud and would rather not accept charity, not to mention that the brother says the claims are exaggerated and that he has a good life for himself.
