Nutrient Darkening or Root Problem?

the more i look at the picture, it looks like a root problem, with some dead roots or something. i've had a lot of dark roots in the past, i use GH FloroNova and that's some thick muddy shit..so... thoughts? the bright white fresh looking root spots are what's got me confused.

I won't say what your water looks like. Your not using some sort of root rot prevention? You can easily do this by adding hydrogen peroxide. I suggest adding 5.5ml (1 teaspoon) daily or 11ml (2 teaspoons) 2-3 times a week of 3% hydrogen peroxide per gallon (3.8L) of water. You can get this at the drug store. There are other root rot control products you could use like hydroguard or sm90.

What are your res temps?
Do the roots smell funky?
Are the roots slimy feeling?
Do the roots pull apart if you drag your hand across them?

Before you start treating your "problem" and possibly damaging your plants or the microherd, you might want to find out what the problem is instead of just treating the symptoms.

Res temps are about 65-70F with all the lights on.
the roots don't have any noticable smells.
not slimy feeling. they're pretty strong and don't fall apart easily.

as i was checking things out a second ago, the more and more i looked at it, it looked like some kind of nutrient coloring or hardening. like, it rubbed off and was just wet. hard to explain. but certainly didn't seem like root rot, which i've dealt with only once before. this feel different.

Are you using any enzymes for your roots? H2O2 will work, but you should think about cultivating good bacteria and fungi instead of trying to carpet bomb everything. It looks like you got something in that water, and it doesnt look good.

I highly doubt the H2O2 is gonna do anything for you then since it's not root rot.

Are there any light leaks into the buckets? Kinda looks like an algae bloom (which would fit the profile of it washing/rubbing off).

Are the plants otherwise healthy?
