Northern Lights

The genetics of Northern Lights is one of the most confused of all existing cannabis seeds strains, simply because there is no one who can take the entire credit for its creation.

Northern Lights was developed as an indoor cannabis seed strain in the late 1970s, near Seattle in Washington - although the genetics involved in the cross were known to have originated from California - the original home of a great many of the most famous cannabis seed strains. It was initially a stabilised cannabis Sativa strain, crossed with an Afghani indica hybrid.

Northern Lights travelled to Holland as a clone, where it was introduced to the commercial cannabis seed market in 1985 by The Seed Bank. Because it arrived as a clone it could not be inbred for stability and cannabis seed production, therefore Skunk No 1 and Original Haze were used to produce seeds from it so it could be used as a parent plant.

Northern Lights distinctly shows its Afghani Indica genetic background; it is a small plant that produces big, highly resinous flowers. Although it was initially developed for indoor growers, excellent results have been produced outside.

Northern Lights has a sweet, resinous taste and produces a physically comfortable but lazy feeling, known to some as ?couch lock?.

i believe that sensi's version was NL5xNL1, with NL2 eventually substituted for the NL1 somewhere along the line in the breeding program.

i believe it was once said it was an afghani x thai x kush ,,,
selected for least odor , superb high , frosty compact growth
for indoor farms,,, when people had to start bringing their stuff inside from busts and also for people to grow inside in wet . rainy or otherwise un-desirable conditions and . or climates...

i had nl#5 from bcsc and i got a bunch of serious nugs !
i had nl#1 from positronics ,,,less couchy !!!
the nl1 was a little more stoney and less couchlock and the nl5 had me sitting on the couch in the same spot with the lighter in one hand and my bowl in the other watching tv after 2 hits for 3 hours motionless...
i cant remember what i watched but it was the best fukkin tv i ever seen :bigeye: i seen every little detail like it was slow motion!!!!
i woke out of it after my ass start hurting from sitting on the edge of the couch in one position for 3 or so hours :abduct:  :canabis:

Right on - now that's what I'm talkin' about. Like gettin' high for the first time all over again. I'm going to have to try some of these. How big do they get? What kind of yeild could I expect in a 2 x 4 area with 400w hps and soil? With say 3-4 plants. Or could I fit more in that space?

Spaced...

i would get 10 seeds
plant them lovingly (stressfree) in 3 gallon pots
veg till 8" then 12/12...
nl yeilds nice,,,, i only use 1000watters cause they give way more bud its worth the upcharge!!!! with a vent fan you could use it!!!
400 will do tho,,,, you will def get a respectable yield for a 2 person smoking frenzy!!!
i would take clones in veg and perpetuate that shit!!!
determine the best plants after growing and smoking...
establish a mother and ride that wave brother!!!!
northern lights fits any category!!!
its an all around great bud!!!
some can be really super stoney !!!!

I read this at hg 4 2 0

"This strain was developed by " The Indian" on an island in the Northwest. He started with 11 seeds and named them NL#1, NL#2 and so on. Of the plants, Nl#5, NL#8 and NL#1 were the best, in that order. Neville of the Seed Bank shuttled clones back to Amsterdam from Seattle in the mid-80s. Today, Northern Lights #5 is the main variety that breeders use. It's often crossed with other varieties, such as Blueberry, Haze, Juicy Fruit and Jack Herer. Varieties are available from Sensi Seeds (who Registered the name), Canadian Professionals and Nirvana. At least 70 different varieties contain NL genetics. Northern Lights #5 is an absolute must if you grow indoors.

Genotype: Predominately Afghani Indica/Thai Sativa; very stable.
Taste: Strong, full-bodied, hashy.
Smell: Sweet, piney.
High: Body/cerebral stone can cause couch-lock.
Potency: 14 - 16% THC; very strong; great resin production.
Culture: Easy to grow; can be pushed with fertilizer.
Traits: High Flower-to-leaf ratio, compact buds, purple tinge to leaves as plant matures.
Yield: Very good; a favorite among Commercial growers.
Disease / Pest Resistance: Somewhat resistant to thrips and spider mites.
Indoors: 60 - 70 days.
Outdoors: Early October.
Ease to Manicure: Easy and fast.
Water Hash Quality / Quantity from Trim: Good but low volume."

This is a quote from Reefermans you can find this thread on his site under the help desk forum.

The northern lights 5 and all the other northern lights lines were sold in seed form only so the cutting story from washington was bs nevil was embarresed that he lost the line , the source was Robert clarke ! all the northern lights lines early pearl , early girl etc etc were purchased by nevil from robert clarke the author of marijuna botony .
It takes a few years but the facts always surfice , most of the lines sold by nevil were purchased from Rob , Skunkman and old Ed and ed rosenthaul in the old days .

I forgot where I read this but Northern Lights#5 is supposed to be: (Haze X Afghani) X Afghani X Afghani, which makes it 87.5% indica.

I am a first time grower and by far from what I read this is the strain to go with. My question is 1. What would be the best place to purchase these seeds being discreet, fast shipping, and good security for shipping to the southeast? 2. I have a 12 bucket bio-bucket set up and would like to fill it up the first time from seed how would I go about this?

"Northern Lights was well established as a Pacific Northwest indoor variety by 1978 and arrived in the Netherlands as four (4) sister clones. Northern Lights lines eventually came to incorporate Skunk#1 and Haze varieties around 1980. Northern Lights was mostly used as an crossing partner to provide the furry resin look often associated with potent varieties. However, Northern Lights also tends to have very small resin heads, both in comparison to the length of the gland stalks and in relation to other sinsemilla varieties. Northern Lights is found in at least 10% of Dutch Varieties."

Some info from Robert Clarke. Taken from the article at CannabisCulture, thanks to Capt.Cript for posting it.
