Noob cab grow, need help!

So ive been anonymously reading various posts, online info, books etc. and I came to the conclusion that it's time to grow my own goods!
I think that with a little help from people here I can be successful.
Also I plan on doing this long term so my cabinet will be done right.

Here's what im starting with:

My design is based on this concept:

I could use some recommendation on lighting and venting.

I will use a 400w MH/HPS SunTube for main area.
1. How many lumens for mother plant, clones? I will use cfl lighting there.

My 400w SunTube is on its own ventilation system, intake is from outside the cab to the light, an inline fan will pull air through that and exhaust outside cab.

2. I will have a separate system with a carbon filter (smell outside the cab is an issue, this is required), what size fan, filter would be recommended?

3. Should this be on a 4" or 6" ducts?

Before you go figuring light,etc.

Figure out how big the flower area,mother/clone/veg are will be.

Here's what I've got so far. Air and light tight, used foam weather stripping and silicone caulking.
Upper level will house the fan and filter, pulling air up and in through a grille. Middle section will be to veg/flower, 34hx28wx16d, hps/mh lamps, holes for air to lower part. Lower section will hold mother(s) and will be used to germinate, T5 cfl, intakes from outside the cab will be there allowing fresh air in.

Now would be the time to take those dimensions to sketchup.

Welcome to ICmag. :tiphat:

Everything is planned out, I'm slowly gathering what is needed. Time to pick some seeds, any suggestions, seed bank, strain for a scrog?
Thanks

Looking great so far there. I have to question how your seam in the middle on the vertical where the doors meet is light and air tight?
For air intake I would suggest use of darkroom intake baffles. Super easy to install, light tight and simpler than designing our own air system.
T-5 will be a great choice for the mom/clone area.
Wanting to see how all you electrics/fans/filters will be housed.
These cabs can get real complicated and expensive depending on how you go. Think things out completely before you start cutting holes. Go high quality all the way and you will not regret it. Your plants will thank you as well.
I have built 2 that have worked great for years and are pretty stealth as well. Love to help or give advice if its needed.
Good luck with this. I will be watching the outcome.
I think you will do well.

Awesome, feeling like I'm on the right track here, that's for the encouragement. I'll be keeping things updated as events go by.

Negative
I need to chAnge my seam from open cell to closed cell black weather stripping, used my phone to record video inside and noticed light through the front and right side, no prob to fix.

Was wondering what to do for intake, PVC light trap, like a few elbows in a row?
Haven't seen those baffles, where can I find them?

For the light trap, use black PVC or spray paint the interiors with flat black. I use a bit of black panty-hose between the elbows for a dust filter. The best way to check for light leaks is to install your 400, turn it on, close up the cab and turn off the room lights. You'll see any leaks easily. Good luck.

Good call, that's what i will use.

Not worried about light coming in through the intakes with this setup as that section is my veg area, should have 24h light right?
Connection through first shelf will be a pvc light trap with panty hose, to avoid cfl light coming up and into flowering area.

personally its all personal preference. I found that its hard to start with prefab cabs and a lot easier and some times better to just custom build around your needs. Maybe next time since you already have something in the works. Welcome to ICmag and positive vibes my friend I will be over here on my bucket if you got any questions.

PVC as descibed above will work just fine. I personally like the space savings and ease of cutting 1 hole for the darkroom vent. It fits flush and does not protrude into your grow space much at all.
Here is a picture.

Sweet idea using the cell phone cam on inside of cab.
Man you can go wild on these cabs. Magnetic locks, super stealth quiet fans and dual extraction are just a few ways to go. Let your mind wander. Your on the right track though.
You will not save a ton on the 18/6. We are talking 6 hours of T-5. Watt wattage I do not know but thats not a big deal, especially if you live in a area with cheaper power.
I have done both 24/0 and 18/6, heck I even did 20/4. Go 24/0 and you will be good. You also as you said do not have to worry about light entering that area then since there is no dark period.
