Non drug-testing blood and urine tests and marijuana

A friend of mine was asking me about how dangerous it is for her to go in to the doctor to have urine and blood tests done checking for illnesses. I told her I doubted that marijuana compounds would register on the tests because they'd probably have to be looking for specific reactions, and why would they waste their time. Then again, with today's equipment, testing is getting easier.

We don't live in a "medijuana" friendly state. I consider her and myself both medical users, but a lot of us have to hide what we do for the sake of our jobs and scholarships. She has been sick a lot lately though and pot is about the only thing that makes any difference with the nausea. I'd like to see her able to get in and get tests done without fear she'll be persecuted for medicating on the sacred herb.

Any advice the community could offer would be appreciated. Stay safe folks.

P.S. - Maybe this should be a sticky? I'm sure many people wonder this one.

Make an anonymous call and ask if they screen for drugs with the samples. I would bet and hope there are laws against screening for and making a part of her records something unrelated to what she's there for. Seems to me no reason at all for her to be screened for MJ and far less reason that her records should end up in the hands of authorities even if they did somehow find it, such as the tests screen for drugs just to make sure they detect the possibility of drug use they being a reason for the symptoms. But I would still think they have to tell you in advance and even if they did cannot release that to authorities. The only other question might be if an insurance company or someone associated with her employment might have access to her medical records but I believe it's all confidential and private by law.

i can make a guess for you,
but you should always ask to be sure..

i doubt they will check for mj. it costs more money for that test, and they are cheap - insurance won't pay... only thing i would question is if your underage person, and your parents ask the rx to test for drugs behind your back.. but even in that case i think there is some sort of confidentiality.. not sure if its ethical to do that, or even let your parents know the result...unless the doc is your dad, lol.

but this may happen: they might donate your left over blood sample to a company that likes to do testing for studies and stuff..like an anonymous random sample (no links to you at all) for drug use or aids..etc. but never attached to ur real name/identity.

results should ALWAYS be private between u and ur rx, they aren't gonna call the cops on ya..

i do remember reading someone posting about telling a doc about their mj use, and having the doc write that down in their file - in a negative way, like patient is addicted to marijuana..don't remember who -- but not sure how permanent that is, or if that info would be shared with your insurers -- i think you have to opt out of it or sign something to not participate in info sharing w/3rd parties, before your go to a doc like that...or ask the doc to see your files, and him/her to stike his comment from the record..and then you can change doctors..

more info is needed on that tho, as i'm curious ...

Good point. Actually, if there's even a chance you'll need insurance or anything some day, like a background check might be performed for a job, etc you shouldn't tell docs anything. I know it sucks but I shared some info with a doc and that a-hole wrote it all down like a good boy then an insurance company came in to check my medical records and were very suspicious. It's weird but it's best not to tell docs anything unless you really think it's part of what he needs to know to make you well because it can come back to bite. In thinking about this thread it probably is best to check any make sure exactly what they'll test for and if the results can be excluded from medical records later should someone request a copy of them. This insurance company I was trying to get coverage from went back like seven years and that's a long time, things you don't think will matter that far out can.

It's just that there are professional reasons nothing must be on paper anywhere. Definitely can't let that happen. Would mean instant firing and other issues. :(
