No more burner phones?

Looks like they are going to end the ease of burner phones by requiring registration.

Today U.S.lawmakers proposed a new bill that would require anyone purchasing a prepaid cell phone to register it and show identification during the purchase. "This proposal is overdue because for years terrorists, drug kingpins, and gang members have stayed one step ahead of the law by using prepaid phones that are hard to trace," Senator Chuck Schumer said. If the bill is passed, U.S. wireless carriers would be responsible for holding prepaid buyer information on record so that the purchaser can be identified by law enforcement officials.
"While most Americans use prepaid mobile devices lawfully, the anonymous nature of these devices gives too much cover to individuals looking to use them for deviant, dangerous means," Senator John Cornyn said.

Someone mentioned to me buying 15-20 burners and selling them later for a profit.

I wonder if someone clean could start a little business buying prepaid phones and reselling them?

I know there are ways around this fake ID, get a homeless guy to buy it etc. But it sure does take a major blow.

I wonder if anyone will stand up and fight against this as a privacy issue or if this is just going to walk through.

Get a landline phone...mobile/cell phones give me an earache and make me paranoid.

Some good points in your post, but I think the bill will pass.

Like the idea of buying up a load too.

Not gonna happen. For instance, you can buy a prepay phone off of an individual, and then use the service. Now what good is the registration? Not to mention I can't see any carriers that would be real eager to do this...They already get that information anyway for the most part. I know, I worked for a major wireless carrier. So when that person leaves the store w/ the phone, what's to stop him from giving it to someone else? Nothing. Then push comes to shove, it gets tracked back to the original purchaser, so what? He is not gonna have any idea who has the phone, maybe it's been passed down 5 times since then. It just doesn't make sense. What about the retailers that sell them packaged off the shelf? What about online orders and sales? Obviously the folks pushing this have no idea how they are sold or work.

I thought about buying phones from other people.

But how long do you think it would take them to:

a) pass a second law making it illegal to sell a phone with service
b) slap people with conspiracy charges

A is way more likely. Both are easy to prove and enforce.

Hey Mr Bob, we confiscated 3 phones from 3 drug dealers that were in your name. How did they get them? Oh you sold them? Well you are in violation of Law A.

It may be back to pagers and pay phones...... LOL

There are no functioning pager services in the US anymore, so I'm told. Payphones have also become quite scarce.

Did you see they're trying to pass a bill to allow wiretaps to email and texts? Apparently they are still unable to capture texts unless they get a phone on one end. That means texting is safer than phone calls, at the moment anyway.

Off to go buy a case of tracphone burners...

make sure you register and/or upload them from a computer not associated with you. IP addresses are registered when you register them, etc.

look around theirs PLENTY of alternatives , You can buy anon Simcards off the net from Hong Kong for example, youll pay a little more for your calls, but what price do you think security is worth i guess

Allthough saying that, im know the US cell network is a little different than most , but it works for me,

+1, text msg's are the (relatively) safer option right now but that's not to say they're wise to use to discuss MJ/growing, IMHO. Most cell phone companies don't store them past 7 days. AT&T is on record claiming 48 hours then total removal and Verizon claims 36 to 72 hours. Sprints the exception - they hold them for 2 weeks. Then they're deleted. So they claim. These are also the same companies, by & large, who handed over tons of our private data to the gov't without a warrant or even pc. So really, fuck them & whatever they claim.

Also, their removal by the phone company doesn't mean they're gone forever. Some phones store them even if you delete them until new data takes up that space. Like a computer, the deleted info is marked so that it can be overwritten but it isn't 'gone' until you actually add new data to take up that space. Others can be retrieved using certain techniques for data retrieval. Depends on the phone, whether it uses a SIM card or downloads data direct to the phone. Sim holds less deleted info but is easier to access. Phones that download direct store more deleted info but are harder to access. But if its a SIM card phone for 150 bucks I can buy a device that will let me download, decode and read someone's messages that they thought were deleted. Imagine what Leo can or will do.

what do yall think about fake emails. just use phones to page eachother...send a little text with a code phrase, then respective parties check their decoy emails. just remember to delete all your emails, and use a program that doesnt save your username password so computer technicians cant find your account if your computer is seized.

i dont like text messages period because ive seen cops on TV pull up records. having texts in your phone is just too much evidence against you.

Before you go buying up a bunch of phones just remember they will probably be worthless if this passes and any anonymous phones would probably be quickly deactivated until they got correct customer info to comply with federal law. This would consist of more than just giving them random names and info like people do now, a state issued ID is not too easy to fake or really worth the risk of doing so for that matter. Might be easier if they just legalized pot for everyone so you can talk about it all you want. ;)

You are competely wrong about text msgs being safe, they never have been safe, EVER!

Apples and oranges, wiretaps have nothing to do with what info an iPhone stores locally. And a foxnews link? I hate to sound all liberal and snobby, but I detest those folks. Also, anyone who doesnt know what their smartphone stores and how to clear it often, probably shouldn't be using one for Illicit activities In the first place.

yea plus smartphones have geotags in them too. dont use your smartphone for conducting illegal business for sure. go to metro PCS and buy their cheapest POS phone. the older the better. then use a believable name (not FUK YOO) lol....i like using actual names...i pull them off craigslist reality listings or i go look at movie credits and pick a random name. or i use the names of my enemies lol.
