winter crops suck and are best used for extracts...fluffy buds..i used to grow year round in so cal and new England in heated greenhouses there...yeehaw..if you get cheap firewood get a hydronic heating system...well worth it...I could burn stumps and other undesireable wood...also heated my house and floors and water with it..

By winter crop you mean crop number 3 or crop number 2? I agree with you on crop number 3 which is why it will only be used for oil. I don't even need the $$ from it I will most likely donate most of it for edibles/tinctures to local terminally ill patients who receive free medicine.

Crop number 2 will be flowering out at there ideal times in nature which is mid October-Xmas, many of these strains (haze, Thais, Colombians etc) don't start pushing pistils until October even if you start them in the spring.

Of the tunnel greenhouse setup? I don't have that designed yet that is for this winter. My neighbor is an engineer, my dad and bro are mechanical engineers, and I will also consult a local contractor who does lots of ganja jobs.

Page 9 are some coverings I'm looking at. Length will be ~100', not sure in width yet. It'll be on a windy hillside, though the whole garden will have a wind blocker to help some, I will only cover the plants if it is really bad weather though so it will only cover the plants about 7-10 days a month in the winter.[/QUOTE

It will be interesting to see what the minimum needs will be for heat in the winter months. The sierras Nevadas have that great climate but like you mention get close to freezing in winter months.
With some sort of heat sink in the greenhouse it seems possible but cold seems to be the limiting factor.

I will not be using any heat. Crop number 3 will need to be a tough plant, that's why I'm looking at himilayan landrace plants.

Crop 2 will be fine weather, though it will be chilly which is why I will need to grow out hundreds, maybe thousands, of seeds looking for winners.

Mother Nature is very forgiving in my location, and that is the point of the tunnel greenhouse to protect them when Mother Nature is not in a forgiving mood. If I had to grow locked in a cage, I wouldn't grow.

I was referring to mother nature hiding the sun. A week (or more) of darkened skies can severely affect a grow

My bad I misunderstood. supplemental lighting is just annoying to deal with for me, and at present I will be able to apply as an outdoor farm for new Cali law since no supplemental lighting will be used. Honestly though I'm really not worried about a week of cloudy weather, few $$ lost from having slightly smaller plants is more preferable then the headache of running supplemental lighting. Also the whole idea with this strategy is no energy is used, for heating or for light.

I'm thinking of just going all in with gale force.

Leaning towards one fully loaded growers package at 30' wide, 60' long, 1800 square feet for just under $10,000.

They sell just the frames. I can get a 30' wide 96' long, 6' high side wall, 11' high at center, for $5600. At 7' spacing I can comfortably fit 50 pots. So with two I can get my ~99 pots for $11,200 for the framing.

On the same page they sell the solarig, really tough GH plastic for 21 cents a square foot. The greenhouses are 30*96=2,880 square feet* 21 cents=60,480 cents or ~$604 per greenhouse

I'm just looking for a very sturdy frame that I can throw a very sturdy covering over the plants only during storms. Storms happen up to a week total each month, rest of time is nice weather.

are you only covering the roof? the sides added in would make the plastic more like 54' wide.
Sounds like a good plan, especially the no energy costs part.

I'm not sure yet how far I would go down, I think I'll go all the way down and thanks for pointing that out. I contacted the company who sells them to see if the solarig and gale force can be used in combination.

ya but you used lighting .....he aint gonna have any electric....big difference...yeehaw

Yes and he is flowering out his landrace sativas in February, also a big difference, I will be flowering them out at there normal time in nature-October-December, if I understand you correctly then pure sativas cannot be grown outdoors at all to high quality? Or are u referring to crop 3? Which again I would agree it could only be used for oil without Additional lighting.

I will only be doing harvests 1 and 2 in 2016, then expand to harvest 3 the following year, hopefully. Also dropping the additional smaller gale force until next year, California is just still too sketchy and grey even if I have my waterboard permit out front with those types of numbers.

Yeah I've got an intake luever...with evaporative cooling pad..only needed in summer. Winter controls set on heating and purging cycles...keeping the space warmer while decreasing humidity.
