New Wick Cloner For $0

F

Well I've been needing a new cloner because I no longer have the space for many jiffy pots that requires little to no maintenance. So I made my way over to the link-o-rama and made a spin-off of pontiac's cheap effective cloner.

Starting materials...
1 Hawaiian punch plastic jug.
1 plastic tupperware container
perlite and little bit of peat moss
string

I started off by drilling a hole in the middle of my big old hawaiian punch jug and put some random string I found around my house through it. I also made two tiny holes on the bottom ring to allow for some drainage.

I cut my jug in half and filled it up with a mixture of perlite and peat moss (a lot more perlite than peat moss cause I only had a dozen left over used peat pellets...) This was soaked in water and allowed to drain. It took around a half hour.

I cut a little slit into the bottom portion of my big jug so I can easily fit the top back on.

Next I cut my clones and threw them into the mix. 7 clones in total. I used no rooting hormone (I usually do so this will be an experiment).

Back on the top goes and I threw it underneath a 23w CFL along with the mom. I let some of the drained water stay in the tupperware container so the wicks have something to draw up.

We will see if the cuttings take or not. Hopefully it works fairly well and provides another simple cloner.

The clones are still looking good, nice and healthy. But I'm gonna wait a while longer than 4 days to check for roots. I'll be back with updates in another 10 or so.

Cool cool... trying a similar thing with beer cups, coco, and cotton string. My rise is a tad big, though, it seems...

best of luck to ya. If it ends up working nicely feel free to post your results here or lemme know if you make a thread. I'd be interested...

It worked OK, providing that the wick wasn't more than four inches between the bottom of the cup and the water. I tried it with a six inch run and it didn't work well.

Then I adopted it to use with jiffy plugs in the field, and I'll post some pics of that when they've finally arrived in my gallery.

edit: Here we go.

I made some wicks out of cotton yarn folded over and knotted off.

Then I perforated a rubbermaid with forty holes corresponding to the jiffy plugs.

Then, in the field, I filled an unperforated rubbermaid with water up to a point, above which I poked a hole for drainage. I leveled this rubbermaid.

I puffed out the jiffies in the field and stuffed the wicks into the bottoms. I lay the perforated rubbermaid on a sapling over my lap, so I could slip my hand underneath and pull the wicks through the holes, while still having the rubbermaid supported hands-free. The results:

The final with some deer netting tented over from a shrub branch hanging over:

The rubbermaids were like four bucks each, the yarn was five bucks, eighty jiffies were about eight bucks. The labour cost to get them there was fucking astronomical :wallbash:

lmao at the astronomical costs...

Looks like a good outdoor cloner for sure. I love to use the jiffy plugs for cloning. Definitely my method of choice.

Checked one of my clones the other day, and nothing in terms of roots. But nothing in terms of rot either. So I'm still hopeful.

Gonna burn my first bowl in a month later today, so roots or not, I'm fucking excited.

Peace,

And 19 days after being placed in the cloner with NO rooting hormone, we have the following...

ALL 7 CLONES WITH NICE WHITE ROOTS

AND THE CLONER IS ALL ALONE NOW... WHAT TO DO WITH IT??? :headbange

I hope this can end up helping someone else out. I never watered or messed with temperatures or anything. Temps ranged from 60's on a few nights to highs in the mid 70's. This just goes to show the ease with some strains can be cloned without fancy equipment. The cloner literally sat there, under indirect light from a 23w CFL (talking maybe 3 feet away). Now I have an abundance of clones, cause I started some more and figured many of these wouldn't make it. :muahaha:

Peace, love and clones,

Results

Just as a cap, here are my results from the rig I showed earlier.

When I first arrived to the site the other day, after rock-climbing, slipping, and falling over 3KM of bush, this is what I found:

That was 24 wimpy plants out of 70+germed seeds with tails all. Before a closer inspection, I noticed the reservoirs were full and the plugs moist, and we've seen a few hot ones, so I was puzzled at the sprout rate and pinner size.

Then I noticed roots on almost all the lifeless plugs.

And the inevitable sign of vermin, to the peat itself they ate:

So - two weeks in the bush, no maintenance at all, and a stretch of hot weather that lasted five days right after planting (no rain). Over 90% success rate.

Sadly, over 60% lost to pests, and the remainder were the squat runts that grew under the tall ones. I'm used to dropping bigger plants in the woods, which get fewer problems, so this has been a lesson in pestulance. I'll be using every reasonable poison known to man from now on.

Good to see your cloner worked nicely, fb!

Cloner is still in action. I haven't even had to change the water in the lower tupperware yet, and have yet to lose a clone in it.
