New quantum electronic ballast

M

moses224

I just got my quantum horticulture ballast. Its 600w but can be run 50% power 300w, 75% 450w or 600w one hundred percent. For me its a downgrade as I run one thousands but read allot about efficiency so gave it a try. It was !$200 for the ballast, reflector, bulb, one twenty volt plug, and 240v plug. It strikes both MH and HPS runs 120 or 240v, has built in fan, claims to be 15% cooler then other ballasts. For the money you cant beat it.

I mounted between two 1000s so it really fills in the lighting between the other two reflectors and i hung just bare bulb (no reflector). Its been running for one week and absolutely no problem the output frequency is definitely more stable them other 400 MH electrical (veg room) which tends to flicker every so often.

Anyways I don't work for them I have no interest other then sharing the experience and good value with my fellow IC'rs . I really found the alternating power really cool especially for smaller growers as you could veg at 300w then increase to 450 then flip it to flower with HPS 600. Similar ballasts are around this was just the first i purchased and am real impressed

Ride on bro I just got 2 of the 1k's that Dim. I am going to see what I can do when I fip to 12/12 with the power at 750 watts for the first month and the second month of flower will be 1k. I dont know if it will yield the same as if I were to run 1k throughout the whole 8 or 9 weeks but the longer part of flower the last 4 weeks and if it goes 1 more than it will have been 5 weeks under a 1k. So I hope to get as much, Its nice to have though if your only doing a couple or if you need to veg in the same room it will work perfect at 500 hps or m/h!
So does anyone run a 750 watt and then switch out to a 1k like I mentioned? Does anyone think it will yield less than if it were 1k all the way through

Interesting write up Moses, I am very happy with my Lumatek 600s but the dual bulbs [HPS&MH] & adjustable power functions are fantastic, just what I have wanted for ages, it just has to be the best option when vegging clones.

Funny you should say that... I just started a thread about this... some friends who really know what they are doing are telling me to reduce lighting by as much as 50% in the last 3 weeks, with a single light system you could do this really nicely.

Are these ballasts silent like the lumateks are supposed to be?

:joint:Cheers. I have the same exact quantum ballast with a cooltube reflector on the bulb. I was wondering if you know if it is bad for the ballast to run a 400w bulb on a hundred percent(it's a good amount brighter)??? I'm having problems with the 600w bulb I got and it's all I had on hand for now, but I don't want to do any harm to the ballast running it like that. any idea?
Congrats on your new ballast!

Well, first nobody answered my question, but i will answer yours. DON'T EVER USE A BULB THAT IS NOT RATED FOR A PARTICULAR BALLAST!

You are lucky it has not exploded. It will damage the bulb as well as the ballast and I don't believe that is covered under the warranty.

so if you dont mind me asking, where did you find a deal like that 200 for bulb, ballast, and reflector?? and can i get it?

I'd aslo like to know where i can get this kind of great deal. This would be a good addition to the (Variac) dimmer i bought for the vortex fan i have.

haha man this thing looks so cool - really oldschool!

is it possible to let a 600w light on just 450w then? it sounded like it would be

Ive found a manufacturer in China who claims to make em for Quantum. The specs seem to check out just a different case. $130USD. Search DIYTrade and Alibaba under digital ballast, the pages are full of em and you wont pay over 130 for a 1000W dimming.
I been using old magnetics and was going to upgrade to lumatek 600s then I found this and thought why not, buy a 1000 and get a 600 in the same unit. You cannot get dimming ballasts here in Australia yet

new lumatek ballasts are dimmable .

NEW - A dimming knob has been added which will allow them to be set at 50/75/100% (only reduce the amount of light not the power usage).

why do you want to lower your lumen output ?

I just think that the first days of a rooted cuttings life are critical for maximising a SoG, there has to be a time when you raise the lumens from Flouro levels in your propagator to 100% HPS or MH.

From what I have seen and done myself, this stage could well be optimised and never is, with a SoG, I believe this stage really sets up what you end up with - providing you get the rest right..... :)

Yep, I dimmed mine when I put fresh rooted cuttings in, gave em a few days to get used to the lights (and don't have to keep moving the hood height.) I did some measuirements with my F/C meter, and my Quantum 1000's are exactly 10% brighter than my Sunlight SUpply analog/coil MH and HPS ballasts. No idea on power draw though, do clamp-on ammeters read draw like that?

I too have a Quantum 600 and I love it. When I put the new seedlings into the tent I set it on 50% for a couple days then moved it up to 75% for a couple till they looked ready for full power. It is not the quietest ballast I have ever used since the fan makes a little noise, but it is no big deal.
I plan on adding another 600 to my tent setup soon and am going to get another Quantum for sure.

just picked up a 600 myself, waiting for it to get here..... tick tock lol

can't wait to see how it performs, I have played with the lumateks and they are pretty sweet, just wanted to see how these compare personally and know I can sell either or when I make up my decision OR better yet keep both and setup 2 cabinets.

have now run side by side with 6 lumateks and 4 lumateks blew and where rapidly replaced by manufacturer still np with quantum

I am still having no problems out of my Quantum 600. My grow just finished and I am about to get the next round planted today. So I am looking forward to using the dimming feature to get them started.
I will have another one of these ballasts before I put them into flower this time.
