New grow room

Hey guys it's been a while but it's finally legal to grow here in Boston. So I'm currently setting up a small tent grow probably 3x3 with 4/6 plants flowering maybe a separate little cabinet to keep a couple mother plants and clone . My question here is what are some of the better grow tent companies to look at I'd rather spend a little extra and have the assurance it will be light proof with no leaks. I'm going to be running a 400w light and will be growing mostly ogs and sour type strains. Thanks for any help was hoping to get it started this week

If you are handy, converting a free scrap refrigerator (that already leaked out the freon, usually the ones that don't work) into a grow box is an awesome way to do a small grow and 100% light proof if done right.

A free mini fridge makes makes a nice momma clone cab as well. I never owned a tent but if I did I would end up covering it with foam insulation and beefing it up with extra supplies anyway. A fridge already has all that, and stealthy to boot, plus saves useful junk from going to a landfill.

Otherwise from what I've heard the most expensive tents aren't a whole lot better than the cheap ones. I was scoping out the vivosun 4x4 a few days ago, looks like the best deal of all tents to me but they only have like 2 sizes so far and no 36x36. Here would probably be my next choice: https://www.amazon.com/iPower-GLTENTXL1-Hydroponic-Push-Lock-Water-Resistant/dp/B00RW2V5G2/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1482135794&sr=8-7&keywords=apollo%2Bgrow%2Btent&th=1. Or the apollo's if you like pretty purple stitching. Anything else seem's like a rip off especially gorilla's.

I see using a tent as like a 1 shot deal. Buy a cheap one and use it once or twice, then use any funds to build a solid room if you plan on growing. Even if you don't own the room I would rather build a portable wood structure that could be taken down and moved, held together by screws or brackets.

Like jaybo says some start to deteriorate and that means there is toxic crap going into your house and buds. Especially if it's made in china you can probably be sure of that.

3x3 is pretty small hence the reason I suggested using a refrigerator, which when gutted is about the same size. It would last a long time and could be cleaned very well. I would still rather have a free or cheap 3x3 wood cabinet of sorts than a tent that cost a bill. 4x4 maaaybe. a 5x5 or bigger though I might do someday in a pinch, I could produce enough in one i'm sure to negate the cost of the tent over a few runs then throw it away or use as a drying chamber without harsh UV's breaking it down even more. I'm sure there's plenty of tent growers out there but not sure why they don't chime in to help?

They sell 4x8 sheets of mylar coated foam panels at home improvement centers for 10-12 bucks a sheet that could be metal taped together into a 4x4 area, then just hang everything from the ceiling or reinforce into a cheap 2x4 frame. I would be willing to help guide you to build even without expensive tools if you need, can't recommend a good tent though.. my buddy just got a gorilla for like 500+ dollars and had to tape all the holes AND make light proof ducting for the vents. They are supposedly the best and to me are a joke..

Build your own. It's cheaper, use a corner of a room...2 walls are done. L frame the rest...poly paper...zipper door.

Upgrade....need a 6x6 now? Widen it 3 more feet...

I've got 6 year old secret jardins that still work.

I think there are lots of decent tents on the market, why not visit a big hydro store and see some in person that are set up and loaded with gear and check their stability/functionality.

I cant see going smaller than a 5x5 and a thousand to flower 4 legal plants.
you are going to want plenty of extra for gifts, no?

here's a 5x5 with 9 plants and a thousand.
I put my fan and filter on the floor next to the tent blowing through the filter and saving space and wear on the tent.

Dude, it's been legal for 2 weeks! You're just thinking about this now?!?!?!
Are you a 6 plant household or a 12 (2 or more adults)?
I tend to agree that you might do better with something that isn't a tent, but I've never used one so who am I to say. I suggest finding a good grow shop and touching the tents they have for sale. Get an idea of what quality you get get for the price and availability sizes. Then drive down to Ikea and do the same.
After that, look at your apartment with a measuring tape in hand, crunch some numbers on size & wattage.

I checked the local hydro store ...unfortunately all the stores in my area are a chain and offer the same product which is the gorilla tent . I'll have to try and find another store other than the local hydro chain

All the people suggesting a wood cabinet or a fridge or make a room , I don't have the room to do it or time that's why I want to get a tent that can go up and take down and move around that is light proof and ready togo. I wish I did have the time and ability and room to make a grow room but it's not an option right now

Thanks for the help even if I had a 12' x 12' I still wouldn't have enough space ...I love variety and smoking and I'm pretty generous with my coworkers and friends . The local hydro store was pretty high on their prices so been browsing craigslist for the right deal

Take a look at Vivosun. I have one and so far it is good. It was cheap and easy to set up. It took me around 15minutes to set up.

I have 3 300W LED, a circulating fan, an extraction fan and a filter hanging from it and it is solid.

I have had it less than 1 year, so I can't comment on how long it will last.

It has plenty of 6" and 4" holes for circulation as well as two openings on each side and a window on the door.

I just started a grow using a Secret Jardin. I picked them because their tent height best fit my ceiling height

I spent a fair amount of time looking ovr various tent threads and youtube videos. My impression is that to a degree you get what you pay for.

I also got the impression that there is no such thing as 'no leaks'. I opened my SJ and did a test with my main light on and my room lights off. There were two small pinholes along the main line that the tent was folded on. There was also some light visible at the zippers.

from reading reviews and watching videos, you'll find the same on basically every other tent. Keep in mind, the issue is not leaks out if the tent, it's leaks into the tent. In that view, I did not see any light leaks. Even if there were, you can just slap some duct tape over them. If you get a cheapo tent whose zippers are not well sealed, hang a curtain of black poly over it and little to no light will get in. same for port hole leaks. Those are the areas that the more expensive tents tend to do better than the cheap ones it seems.

last bit of unsolicited advice, no matter what size you get, there's a good chance you'll quickly be thinking of getting a bigger one. Save yourself some buyers remorse and go up one size, e.g. a 4x4. it;s not that much bigger in terms of room impact but the available grow space is 50% more. also keep open the option of a veg tent

Have fun.

oh btw, i ordered on line. I couldn't find anyone around here who carried SJ tents. I couldn't find the model i wanted on amazon or e-bay either. I typed it into google and three hydrostores popped up. I called the one with the cheapest price, ordered and had delivery of an intact tent with no issues. Added plus was their shipping was free. I've just started growing with it so I can't tell you more than that.

sorry for all the extra blabbing. hope it was of some use

Take care, Ona

Haven't had any problems with my two apollo tents yet... pretty decent material and if they last a couple years I'll be more than happy with the ~$100 bucks I spent.
