New FBI Phone Tap Tech. "Roving Bug"

The FBI appears to have begun using a novel form of electronic surveillance in criminal investigations: remotely activating a mobile phone's microphone and using it to eavesdrop on nearby conversations......

any computer tech or sercurity afficianados familiar or aware of this?? First I've ever heard...I heard the report on a network news station first....gave me thas sick feeling in my gut.....

any input is welcome.

Nextel is always the next to tell. First they listen in on the phone calls. Then they remotely turn on mic then the camera. I also hear that soon they are for the first time ever going to record and save ALL internet activity.

This is a fukt up invasion of our illusion of privacy, indeed...
It does seem unlikely for info to be accidentally discovered this way...
Most likely used on persons already under investigation, and imho, if you're under investigation it's already too late...

as head said about "illusion of privacy"...thats exactly what it is. its not as though we are actually able to have a life that consists of actual privacy, at least not in the U.S.S.A. we are led to think we are safer all the while, what the govt and private sectors of corp. america are really doing to make us "safer" is stripping us of any legal rights so that they can easily expose any threats...and when I say threat, I don't mean, "jihadists" or "terrorists" but those of us who may be making, or attemping to make a living in any ways that will undermine there bottom lines.....its truly a shame every single thing on this planet is under surveillance.......sure there aren't cameras in trees, but there are big cameras in space, sattellites, and at the risk of sounding paranoid, they have incredible capabilities. I don't know if anyone is familiar with "google earth" but that is a very low grade example of the ability of surveillance even the general population has access to, not to mention the govt and many network news programs have programs similar to this but with updated satellite imagery and greater detail.....

Kill your PC!!!! :D

I'd suggest either dropping the whole cellphone thing during operations or get an anonymizer software for those WinMobile phones and get all your contacts a copy of the software so that your kind of creating a virtual private network over GSM/CDMA.
Since its using M$ stuff i cant say it'll be perfect though...Plus a smartphone might be more complicated to remotely operate if you change the phoning software or put Linux on the thing.

And use Torpark for email and web browsing. Even undercover agents and military in Iraq use it because its as good as it gets when you need to access public parts of a network such as the internet and this website without being easily traceable and more importantly WITHOUT YOUR ISP KNOWING WHAT YOU'RE DOING WITH THE SERVICE YOU'RE PAYING THEM FOR!I think that should be the basis, imagine how people would react if USPS ou FEDEX opened and read every mail you sent or got....

there found the link about encrypting software for cellphones...

http://www.securegsm.com/pages.php?pageid=70

Looks good but we still need to identify who runs this company to be sure its safe and that their software doesnt have a phonehome or backdoor feature. One thing that is certain is that your cellphone provider won't know what you're doing with your data/voice access if both you and your contact use this or similar encrypting software.
The popo, well, if there is a backdoor they might have access to it, by force or by cheating and thus decypher the data.

This is why I dont own a cell phone and never will...... plus there a big waste of money for the terrible service they provide. Im glad I never got on the cell phone wagon...... im happy with just my lan line. Ill also never have a car with an onstar system. No mic on my PC either..... aint hapenin. Its pretty simple guys....... just get rid of yur damn cell phones. Everytime I turn around I see someone with a phone glued to there head. People have become addicted to cellphones and talking on phones, its pretty pathetic if you ask me. Like I said, just look around you, you'll see atleast one out of every 3 people with a cell phone stuck to there head all damn day. What the hell do you need to talk on the phone so much about anyways. Most of the time people are just calling others on there cell phone just to us ethe damn thing... not because they have something important to say. It saddens me.....

^^^ c2ccCaptChronic ^^^ you called that correct,,

MY wife just PUSHED me to get cells for the family,.,. as per the MEDIA screem.. she is sure that possesing a cell phone will save your life (hence our kids wil now be safe, what shit),, like that call will stop some crasy ass from doing some ilegal shit... or shooting your ass...

the deal with the phones is this,,, now they have a way to track you, listen in on you ... AND WE PAY FOR IT<,, look at the highend cars,, SHIT they can control your car watch where you drive, HOW you drive (ya nive black box tech stuff)

I would love to get a newer car someday. but, NOT with all the TECH in it,, I would rather drive a old VW than be tracked and listened to,,,,,

it is one more distraction to the REAL world and a cost to our personal econamy...
