Need some music ideas for a restaurant!

I've booked an act for every evening during the next few weekends, but I need some good tunes to play over the PA when there isn't live music playing. Any genre is fine, although keep in mind that we are in the Bible Belt and a fair share of the customer base is elderly or quickly approaching it, so it can't be too heavy or profane. So far I only have a few ideas:

-Umphrey's McGee (Mantis, probably a couple of others)
-String Cheese
-Gentle Giant (Free Hand)
-RJD2 Instrumentals (Deadringer)
-Pete Rock (all of his instrumental albums)
-Sound Tribe Sector 9 (Artifact and Peaceblaster)
-Sublime (40oz and self titled)

plus a few others I can't remember off the top of my hazy ol head

much appreciated peoples!

lol elderly listening to sts9 and bassnectar :biglaugh: not sure they'd quite 'get it'
cant lose with sublime theres a few songs on 40 ozs you might need to skip..

what kind of restaurant are you running btw?

What kind of restaurant is it so we know what to mention?

Is it a:

Sushi bar? Is there a younger crowd?

Steakhouse? Are people dining that have money?

Italian restaurant? A family sitting?

Greek style restaurant? Are you serving ethnic crowds?

Examples like above, help us out so we get a better feel of what to tell you.......

one sure way to run out of the food business, is to annoy your customers who want to enjoy a peaceful meal with a bunch of tunes over the PA...

if you want to listen to the music you like, get some ear-phones...

but whatever you end up doing, play the music with very low volume.

my two cents.

peace

Why even bother replying if you don't even read the original post?

Bingo. Smooth instrumental jazz played nice and soft.

Very casual environment, not an expensive joint but very high quality food...fresh burgers from house-ground sirloin, etc. that kinda thing, all fresh local produce, meat & beer from local breweries. Basically a "beer garden" type restaurant if you guys know what I'm referring to, very large deck and it's outdoors right near the river with a great view of the mountains, so a very relaxed feel to the music in general is what I'm aiming for. Jazz/blues/bluegrass/even old soul are at the top of the list in terms of what customers out here seem to like (from the live perspective, anyways).

bombadil- thank you, but I've been doing this quite some time and understand the difference between the type of restaurant I run and the type that what you posted applies to...obviously the music is there as an enhancement to the atmosphere of the restaurant and will not be played loudly or obnoxiously in a way that reduces the enjoyment of my patrons.

any volume of the unwrapped CD. check it out it's jazz covers of mainstream hiphop tracks. it's the best of both worlds kids hearing a pac melody will make them happy but it being remade into a classy jazz track with a solo by a sax, piano or violin will make the elderly people think it's just good jazz.....

Get Martin scorceses sountrack for his documentary The Blues, if you're feeling bluesy, plenty of variety without getting too monotonous(sp?) 5 discs.

For old soul stuff I have on my ipod "Hitsville USA The Motown Singles Collection" a 4 disc-er that has plenty of soul and gospely stuff, also a sam cooke box set called "The Man Who Invented Soul"

For just relaxing kinda jazzy stuff, any Grover Washington Jr, esp Winlight, can also double as make out music when the lights go out :D

For Jazz, Miles Davis Birth of the Cool and Kind of Blue.

safe rock records, rubber soul- the beatles, Beach Boys-Endless Summer, all of the Eagles records up to and incl Hotel California, 1st Boston Record (edit Smokin :)
Mellower stuff- Jimmy Buffet, James Taylor.

For Reggae, look for a 4 disc compilation called This Is Reggae Music, The Golden Era 1960 -1975

All of these I got by checking out cd's from the local libraries. I can go online at the library near me, put in a artist name, and see cd selections from that artists and order what one's I want. They email me when the cd's arrive and best of all, it's FREE!!!!!!

I have a 20,150 song database now, actually, 1800 cd's woth of music, it's an Endowment Of The Arts, :D enjoy, BL

i can't think of names but what about modern covers of jazz or blues standards ("hey i remember so-and-so doing that") some goooooood voices, throw in the odd classic, but always keep it moving at least at a bossa nova beat, that rules out 12 bar blues (love em but not there). if you're in "country" country throw in some the same idea, a good "twang" :D

Old people? Down south?

Play death metal in hopes to give them a heart attack!

Seriously I have no clue what to play for them, I would get a sateilite radio and put it on the oldies station.
