Cannatastic,

-what are the small towns that you would suggest for me to consider
moving to? I wanted a town where the rent is not outrageous and there
is a good chance to find decent paying employment.

thanks is advance

Isn't it true that you need to have a job setup in the netherlands before you actually relocate? In other words, you can't go there and look for employment. You have to have employment setup before you go there. That's what they told me when I spoke to the netherlands consulate but, I'm also from the u.s. I don't know if it's different if you have EU citizenship. I guess you could go there for visitation and look for employment and then move after it's been setup.

Hey people... So how are you going southflorida ? Did you already went to Nl ? Found a nice place to live and not to expensive ... i didnt, im saving some money ... and then ^^

Hope everything goes fine. Kind Regards

Share The Pain,

Good to hear from you!

Currently I am choosing an employer using the EURES employment network that is part of the European Union Employment Network.

There are many different jobs that are available, and I have many different companies that I am considering.

I will be in the Netherlands by the end of November 2009 to start work for one of the companies of my choice.

I have been in contant with many folks in the NL, and I am aware of the current financial situation in the country. Many people are losing their jobs, in fact in the last 3 months about 150,000 people lost their jobs, which for a country that has 17,000,000 people living in it, this is a lot.

But still, in many industries that are still plenty of opportunities to find a job, and for me it is only temporarily, until my online biz has a revenue that I am happy with. This might take 1-2 years, and until then I will work for someone to pay the bills.

Look forward to meeting everyone in Amsterdam, Haarlem, and Rotterdam when I make the move in November, since these are the three cities that I will be spending the most time in.

Later,

SouthFlorida

Well, I have made the move to NL, and will start looking for a job
in a CS today. If anyone living in NL knows a good coffeeshop in
Amsterdam that is currently looking for people, would appreciate if you
let me know.

Will keep everyone up to date once I find something, and start working
since I think it will be interesting for some people to read what it is
like working in a coffeeshop.

Take Care and Good Luck

Mr.Haze, some, but will keep going until find. It is only a matter
of time when you keep talking to people. Not knowing Dutch makes
it a bit more difficult, but obviously not impossible. Do you know any
CS that is hiring people currently? I was also thinking about going
to places that sell products that have to do with cannabis.

Some of the places I thought about are the Pollinator company, and
similar other companies in Amsterdam.

Dude, you are out of the Morass that is 'Merka - Some find it perfectly acceptable, but some don't.... IMHO, you got out with good timing. We have seen just the 'Tip o' da Iceberg,' problem-wise. Eurpoe has some of the similar issues, but a cooler head about dealing with them...

Keep Talking to People... SF..>!! Enjoy yourself, smile as much as possible, regardless of the weather (a bit challenging, eh..? to get out in the old and rain, on the Bicycle) .. People will find it impossible not to want you around...!! That is the Positive aspect of the American Personality... Bring your Florida Sunshine..

Good on ya'..>!!!!

MR. HAZE in da HOWWWWWSE...!! Lemme just say, da Guy's Got Sole....! Him don't need no Damn Knife to eat no damn Croque Monseur...! Hope you are doing well, Mr. H.

Good luck in Holland SF,I'm sure u will find some work,just gotta try everywhere and be persistent but not annoying...the dutch don't like to be hassled too much,but are normally very helpful IME. There are lots of growshops,headshops etc as well as coffeeshops there that may value a US employee. There are always lots of US,UK and other english speakers that need serving so u could be an asset to some in busier areas especially.

Statis...living in America has taught me to have a positive attitude
and to keep moving toward my goals without quitting or giving up.

And yes, Mr. Haze is a trip, and he says it as he sees it, a really
honest type of guy. In fact he gave me a good kick in the ass
with some of that truth. This was a big help for me, since it really
got me moving, doing twice as much as I should have been doing,
and now it is only a matter of time until I find a good job.

Londinium...after I finish with the coffeeshops that hire people that
speak English and don't know Dutch, I will start with the headshops
and growshops and all the other canna businesses here in the NL.

I am spreading my CV and talking to many people every day, and look
forward to working in this industry that I am truly passionate about.

Will keep everyone up to date about my Amstersdam experience, and
in the near future will start a thread about my experience with the
best coffeeshops and the gear that I try there (both herb and hash)

...my favorite so far has been Amnesia from Rokerie (9 eur p.g) and
the Rifman Aisha hash from Dampkring (8.50 eur p.g.) both tried
through a glass bong and was very satisfied. Amnesia is definitely
for the energetic day high and Aisha is justy perfect for kicking
back in the evening in my hotel, and playing pool, chess, checkers,
or just talking to the visitors and the locals about all the crazy shit
that goes on in Amsterdam and also about everything that happens
in this crazy world of ours.

Agreed....! Nevah Give up...!! It can be infectious.... Someone will be "On your Wagon...!" at some point....

Haha... Good one... Amnesia Haze and Rifman were two of my favorites every time...

Londinium - great quote in the siggy... Really hit to the core... """Melancholy comes with the rain; but 'tis for men of wit and education to rise superior to the common herd of fools, and let neither men nor weather depress their spirit. ""

Awesome. Appropriate for this area, at this time...

All that Summer "mess" almost over..... I am still enmeshed in the morass, in a 'medical state.' ---(lotsa "m's" there)
Many of my Countrymen from around the USA would say that I had the best of all possible worlds... But, I am watching it all go to shizzle before my eyes... Too much B-grade. Too many middlemen/greed. Too many bills to pay, people are desperadoes..

And a bill allowing 1 ounce and 25 sq ft is about to pass. Wrong bill. IMHO, I we waited until 2012 for the vote on this issue, in CA, I think we would be better served...

I'm once again considering (Finally) making it out there to AMS, for a more permanent period. (Other choice is Hawai'i)

Rather than the at least 12 times (lost count) I have travelled there for only up to a month at a time - this would be with the intention staying on. It is a bear, though to relocate in the EU for an American - I am aware of that. Apparently, the best way is to start a business.... In a VERY expensive place... Sounds like a bad idea.

Unless you have a GOOD idea.. I DO have good genetics, and access to many others... lol.. But, growing over there appears to not be a sustainable option.

Hi SouthFlorida ..
Just going through your post ..
I also live in Amsterdam, come out of Riverside, Cali, I have worked at Barneys, there you can definately put in your CV, they are always looking and have some pretty shitty staff currently. I know for sure Dolphins by Leidsestraat was hiring .. Another place that could be hiring is Smokeys on Rembrandtplein.

The best thing is get to know people.. may take a minute but thatll be your best bet to get connections becausea lot of shops hire people through other employess/friends.
Another good thing you can learn is about seeds, how to store, handle and grade them. Well good luck

p.s A little tip, Rokerij is ok with their Amnesia, but head out to grey area and try the Silverbubble or some of the Grey Haze, that'll bring you to some of the best weed in town(from a shop) The shop is located about a 3 min walk from the Dam.

actually the answer to all 3 is "easy"..

Language.. ok now this IS embarressing... I've been here 12 years... I can't speak Dutch.... you'll see - things like the verb and the tense get swapped around in Dutch sentence structure.. it's not "I'm going to the shops", it's "I'm to the shops going"/ ik ben naar de winkel gaan) my other excuse is that Dutch people speak better English than most English people I know and even when you try to speak Dutch to them, they smile at you and reply in English..(it's ok haters, you can tell me off for not speaking the Dutch now if you like :smile:)
j

oh so they speak like Yoda then? I could get used to that if I was more free! ;) So even unskilled jobs pay well then? How readily available are these now? (yes going there to live is something I have been considering for over 10 years too, so good job to those who did it)

If an American wants to work here it is not very easy. First of all you need to be able to do work that no Dutch or any EU member can do, any job must be offered to them first.

You can start a business, if you pay yourself the minimum wage for foreign employees and pay your Dutch and American taxes on the income. Then you will be legal after approval by the Dutch immigration authorities. You will need to apply to be a resident as well as have a work permit to be employed. It takes five years to become a legal resident.
The Requirements
In order to get a residence permit to start and operate a business under the Dutch American Friendship Treaty, the applicant must have the following:

Registration of the business with the Chamber of Commerce;

A business plan demonstrating commercial activities in the Netherlands;

A financial report, prepared by a qualified accountant or tax advisor;

A valid passport valid for at least one year from the application date;

Health Insurance;

Substantial personal capital invested in the business. Borrowed funds are not considered.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Penalties for violations of Foreign Nationals Employment Act:
As of December 1, 2005, employers are subject to increased penalties for breaches of the work permit rules. For businesses, there is a penalty of €8,000 for each non-EU national without a valid work permit found working at the premises of the employer. For private individuals, the penalty is €4,000. Other fines are imposed for failing to keep proper records regarding employment of foreigners.
