Totally agree. I can't ever seen myself being a genetics snob but I understand why some people want to close the world off from their gear. I'm always down to hand out seeds to whoever needs them.
I see both sides to the gene hoarding. Preserving and sharing the best plants is good for all the obvious reasons and just makes sense from the angle of making sure that plant is still around for all to enjoy. But from a business standpoint having a unique product is of great value. And sometimes a great deal of time effort and money have gone into the process that led to having such a great plant.
My own standpoint at least for now is that I will share most of what I have and only hoard (usually still shared with a few) my hopefully good breeding material at least long enough to be a generation ahead of whoever I share it with.
The only people I really do not like sharing with are cash crop types that are not even connoisseurs (easy to spot, they tend to ask what heavy 8 week strains I have), people that do not have a veg and flower room (they will be expecting more) and people that are not actively seeking new material (starting seeds).
Keep the best cuts away from the big commercial guys. The other 2 are because they will never learn to respect the entire process and just expect someone to always makes sure they have good clones.
At some point (sooner than later) a grower should complete the whole process. From learning to grow. To researching the thousands of seed choices and breeders. To purchasing a few packs. Growing, labeling, harvesting, curing. Selecting the best smoke (not always heavy one) and going back to the clones and growing it out and really dialing it in.
Once a grower has done this a few times they have an understanding of why I only prefer to share with other people that are also searching.
Just noticed you said seeds. Not clones. Lol. Sharing seeds for free is awesome. Even more if they produce amazing herbs.
Yeah I feel the same way. I give away seeds to novice growers or growers trying to find something special like myself. When I started a few heads shared with me, so I do the same..Sharing is caring especially in our world.
