The camera will allow you full control over how long the shutter is open for, the size of the aperture and the sensitivity (iso).

Now Auto or P is what I use. P meaning auto but with full flash control.

If you select S of the dial you have Shutter Speed priority. Here you can select the speed that the shutter is open for. And the camera will match the aperture size. A useful setting, but not as useful as the A setting.

A will give you Aperture Priority, this is very useful. Enabling you to increase DOF (depth of field) and indeed Decrease. This is the F stop. Ranging from F2 for say macro lenses (normally f2.8) going all the way to F22 and above, for big depth of field.

Now the camera will select the speed for you, so if using flash like we do, using A setting and manual focusing, playing around with F stops, you can really see what the camera can do.

M setting is completely manual. YOu select speed, aperture ISO etc.

This is about the extent of my knowledge, but can I recommend a DVD set to download. YOu can find it on filestube etc,

Bob.Guiliani.The.Basics.of.Close.Up.Photography. Parts 1 & 2. Really good. It will all make sense.

Dude, go and join his class. Learning those basics properly are what I need to do. TBH, once you have grasped the basics, camera use, light metering etc, the macro work will just fall into place. At the end of the day, alot of it is about the equipment, which we have, so why not learn how to use all of it properly.

I need to invest in an expensive tripod next. My current £120 one is not sturdy enough when loaded with lenses, extension tubes and flashes. Dam thing vibrates when the mirror in the camera moves to take the shot. Really annoying when playing around with tubes, low light and in F2 stop. Using a remote fire and it still looks like I have given the camera to a parkinsons suffer to take the shot. LOL (well slightly exaggerated, but still).
