the type of vpn i am talking about is a paid service, if you don't trust your cc on the net this thread isn't for you
for those who don't know what vpn, vpn stands for virtual private network. a feature of vpn, is a vpn tunnel lets you change your ip while keeping your existing isp, and at the same time encrypt your connection, making it harder to hack and or trace you. the downsides with vpn is it can sometimes be slow (i lost about 20% of my dl speed), can cause websites to not work properly, comes with buggy software, and it generally does feel weird trusting your data to some no name company off google, atleast in my case
how i started my vpn chase was i was looking for a way to access an irc chatroom without exposing my ip, and i settled with trying vpn after putting it off for years. i use freebsd, a unix variant, and installing a vpn was as simple as downloading the client from my package manager, configuring a few lines of text, and rebooting. after that all outgoing networking was encrypted to the vpn, email, web browsing, chatting, and online gaming. on a windows/apple computer/laptop its as easy as going to a vpn supplier and downloading a program. vpn also makes downloading torrents and files encrypted and anonymous so you don't have to fear about downloading pretty much anything off the internet. every vpn is different, some are faster, some are slower, some don't work with certain programs, etc
why i think everyone on icmag should use it: it makes you roughly 70% less likely to be hacked. if hackers can't find your ip, it makes it somewhat difficult to get into your system. on all os, you still have to deal with viruses, but some will not work on a vpn connection.
i got vyprvpn for an extra 10$ from my usenet provider, giganews. usenet might be out of the scope of many members here but i can help people in this thread set up both usenet and vpyrvpn.
if anyone is trying to pursue a vpn connection on their computer, read as much as you can before you start paying money and installing programs, you can possibly break your internet and you'll have to either take your pc to best buy or buy a new computer
any thoughts? anyone else using a vpn?
