Yep - both of them are dry, and although mild-tasting/smelling are both quite potent. The citrus and strawberry smells are a little more apparent now it's in jars, but it's not 'stinky' weed at all, and very smooth to smoke - no coughing, presumably because of the light resin coverage. Does seem fairly potent, even at a week, so longer curing will only improve it. Also I wouldn't say it's particularly indica-leaning in the high either - nice 50/50 mix really.
The last pheno is drying now, and I think it might be slightly more narcotic and stronger too - just a hunch, but I'll report back on that.
This is my first SAGE grow - from a clone gifted to me by a friend, and it's a pheno that turns purple in the last two weeks.
It's very attractive, and has many different colors close-up, even when dry - there's burgundy calyxes in there and almost black budleaves. The aroma is spectacular - one of the most pleasant-smelling strains I've ever experienced. It's candy-sweet tropical fruit (mangoes, papayas, etc.), mixed with exotic herbs and spices - it's like an amazing fruit curry - I can't stop smelling the jar! The taste is creamy fruit with an exotic herby aftertaste. There's no sage, but as if I care about that trivial point.
The one note of caution is that it threw a male flower at the base of each bud at 21 days - no idea why, as it was very happy. I pinched them off and they never returned. But I'm picking one or two selfed seeds out of every bud, so I should be able to reproduce this pheno fairly easily. No-one else I know reported any hermie traits, so it must be a one-off. Yield isn't too bad, at 38 grams for a small plant, so I'm happy with that.
The smoke isn't the most potent I have, but it's a beautifully balanced one - perfect 50/50 sativa/indica just as advertised. It's quite long-lasting too, which makes it a great daytime smoke, but it doesn't have much ceiling, so it can get quite heady if overdone - which is easy when it's so tasty!
I probably would grow it again, as it's incredibly easy to grow, tolerant of nutes and pests, and looks and smells amazing...
The search for exotic sativas is still ongoing, and this is one of the most exciting yet - the legendary Highland Oaxacan Gold from Mexico.
This plant is one of only two seeds I got to germinate from a gifted batch (see the HOG thread in DJ Short's forum for background info), and both were female. The other female sadly began throwing male flowers at week three - not a lot, but enough to be problematic, so it was culled, although I have a backup plant for another run later.
This plant was much more stable, with only a few seemingly sterile bananas in the last two weeks - sharp-eyed viewers may spot on or two lurking in the buds. The calyx to leaf ratio is amazing, and trimming took no time at all - virtually the whole plant was bud, on skinny stems, and it was a nightmare trying to get them to stand up to photograph them, but with a yeild like that I don't care.
The smell is spicy, peppery and slightly fruity, but overall is like a spicy tomato sauce or mild curry, with a hint of diesel or acetone. Resin coverage is pretty good for a pure sativa, and it finished exactly at 12 weeks, which is good enough for me. When it's dry I'll do a proper smoke report - again, check the DJ Short forum for that.
Thanks - they were - about ten minutes. That's my favourite Flo pheno there - hopefully now soon to be receiving some pollen, after three years keeping it going...
These seeds were gifted to me a while ago, and were made from 2nd-gen seeds apparently made from the original DJ Short Delta-9 collection. I don't have any direct evidence of that, but the grow was a test to see just what came out. A friend grew some out a while ago from the same seed-batch, and it was amazing.
This is the faster pheno of my two, at nine weeks, and quite indica in structure. I pulled many of the shade-leaves off last week, due to a small mite attack that was getting established, and didn't want to risk my other plants unduly, hence its shorn appearance. Until recently the plant had a very tart fresh blueberry fruit smell, mixed with a distinct diesel/gloss-paint smell - that is now receding, and is mixed with a more orange liqueur smell - gorgeous, basically.
The buds are rock-hard and fairly resinous, and have taken on quite a 'club' shape - they're also unusually 'tufty' in appearance. I'll report back once this has dried, and also post pics of the other, more sativa pheno in about a week:
Interesting Blueberry pics EM (not saying the others aren't). 98' inline DJS Blueberry F3:s eh?
I look for mutual traits with my own DJS Blueberry, but seem to have a hard time finding them. Not the colors, not the bud structure, the phenotype vaguely,
I would not have guessed Blueberry from the pics only, but that's what make it the more interesting. Variety.
It's a very indica pheno, definitely, and no purpling at all, but that doesn't really mean dubious lineage where BB is concerned.
The other pheno, whilst still green, has a much more 'blue' tint to the budleaves, and looks a little like one of the buds in the Cannabible 1 - kind of 'bobbly' look to the buds. It's almost done, and is really interesting - more foxtaily, and the resin is building to much higher levels than the indica pheno.
It should be done in a couple of days, and the smell is the one I've been looking for - it's so Blueberry, it's ridiculous, but there's a definite orange liqueur thing going on too - and a perfume finish that takes it away from weed altogether. I got a couple of girls to sniff it today, and they were definitely excited...
This one will also get some new Flo pollen dumped on it, as the potential combinations of flavours and highs is just too much to think about...
This is the second of my two Blueberry experimental phenos, and in my opinion is far, far closer to the ideal than the last one. Still no purpling, but a much more 'blue' look to the budleaves gives a clue as to where it might lead.
What's interesting about this pheno is that the stems seem much too skinny to produce such large buds, although they're quite strong in reality. And the thin leaves suggested very thin buds originally. In fact, most of the leaves on the plant never got beyond three blades, and are a very odd shape.
But what's amazing about this pheno is the aroma - pure Blueberry ice-cream, with orange liqueur sauce. Interestingly, some of the candy/perfume smell it had earlier on has been replaced by a more tart berry smell as it's finished off, whereas I thought it would go the other way and end up very sweet.
The buds are foxtaily, but in a compact way - kind of 'bobbly', and very resinous. They felt heavier wet than pheno #1, which has dried very light indeed - I only got 24 grams from that first plant, which actually more resembles some Cali Orange now it's dry!
I'm hoping there's an ounce here at least, but it's the flavour and high I'm most interested in, and if it's as good as I hope, I'll definitely be running this again, and getting some clones to a couple of other growers I know to see if it can handle heavier hydro techniques...
And here are a couple of shots of the plant in early veg, showing the odd leaf-shape - the leaves are also very delicate, tear easily and feel slightly furry:
On my most purple Flo the older fan leaves are turning brown from the edges in. Going crispy too. The rest of the plant is really healthy and the smell is of Cuban cigars!!! Really excited about this one...should I be worried about the browning thing? I remember reading somewhere that you had that issue.
Really keen to get some authentic DJ stuff...do you know if if F-13 is available? I'm tempted by the Vanilluna.
It sounds like my purple - they would eventually wither up and drop off, and it was quite alarming until I learnt to use gentler nutes, and less of them. The specimen outdoors, which has only been fed organics occasionally, looks much better, but even so, there's a constant dying-off of older shade-leaves - more so than other strains.
This is the healthiest specimen I've grown so far, in terms of leaf-burn/loss, etc. - this was grown in my back garden in rainy England a couple of years ago, and only yielded 2 ounces from a three-foot plant, but it was delicious...
Wow that is some nice looking outdoor Flo...If I get anywhere near that I'll be delighted. Here she is by the way for your perusal (including dry crispy leaf scenario):
What do you reckon? Doing ok?
I mighty tempted by some Vanilluna by the way. Have you enjoyed that strain?
Man, you have no problems there at all. That's just normal shade-leaf death in my book. The rest of the plant looks awesome, and will be interesting to see how the tops develop on a less branchy specimen.
As for Vanilluna, I'm smoking some now, and would definitely recommend it! I decided to keep the least fruity pheno of my pack, and probably the closest to the Cocoa Kush in flavour, though they're still distinctly different. Mine's only 'vanilla' like the Thai stick is 'vanilla', so not too sweet, but leathery, liquorice, earthy, creamy - really hard to describe, but delicious. Almost has a hint of old herbal cough-medicine about it too...
If you can get either of those strains for real, I would - F13 in particular is meant to be over. That said, there's plenty buried in the Flo genetics to dig out - I'm on my 3rd generation now, and they're looking very interesting (pics soon).
Here's the first of my MoFlo 3rd-gen plants down - this is from one of the two seeds, one male, one female, that I got to germinate from the reverse-hermie male documented way back in my Flo breeding thread. The male produced pollen, but as far as I can tell from the plant I applied it to, it's dud. The same however can't be said for the female, which although small, is perfectly-formed. And not a trace of male flowers, which suggests it's good to keep for further inbreeding.
This is the most indica-leaning Flo plant I've ever had, and although it was small when it went into flower, the budsize is high, although only the top ones are significant. But a plant vegged out to a bush might produce quite decent yields - definitely keeping the clone for further grows, as in many ways it's a much more robust version of my original #3 purple from the packet.
It's very fast to finish - this was 46 days, and it's done - rock-hard buds with a decent covering of resin, though not as heavy as others I have still to harvest. The smell is heavy in the 'mentholated mushrooms' spectrum - earthy, but minty and creamy at the same time. I'm getting quite used to these odd combos now, but it does occur to me they might not be typical Flo aromas to many growers.
Beautiful as always, a truely excellent representation of how good things in the uk can be......your grows have been a pleasure to watch over the last few months i've had to suffer without growing, i look forward to getting back into posting some pics soon.
Peace
