Been making beer for 10+ years now. Doing all grain(buy 50lb bag in bulk) re-use yeasts....I got it down to $.40 per pint of 5% ale. Much, much cheaper than the local micro cost.

I make 10 gallons at a time, and I would say a 10 gallon batch takes 8 hours of my time from start to kegging. Now the beer takes 2-3 weeks to ferment like Jack D said.

Bargain shop, look on Craigs list for people selling their homebrewing equipment or garage sales.

Better yet, support your local homebrew store.

If you want to mail order (I do- I pretty much only use organic ingredients) check out
www.breworganic.com
They are good folks with decent prices, and have great sales every year.
Shipping is quite reasonable, especially if you are west of the Mississippi.I have to admit I only go to the local store when I'm out of yeast or bottle caps. They are just SO expensive.

Like any other hobby, it can get expensive if you let it, but you dont HAVE to have a ton of gear. I have a handmade SS 10 gal pot with spigot-it was pretty expensive, but a lifetime investment.
My propane burner is the other cant-live-without item. Our electric stove could sit there on high all day before being able to fully boil 6-7 gallons of wort!

AND it has a decent taste? VERY nice. How many hours of work do you say goes into it from thought to drink on the first batch?

for me to do a step mash infusion, my brew day is about 7 hours, to do a single infusion takes me about 5 hours, extracts took about 3 hours to do. then 3 weeks of fermentation and finishing. i am currently converting an old fridge into a 4 keg keggerator using cornelius kegs (the 5 gallon soda kegs) which are about 20 bucks a piece. it will be nice to have 4 brews on tap at any given time, i plan to brew a fat tire clone, a forbidden fruit clone (verboten vrucht or fruit defendu for my european friends) a trippel and a milk stout to fill it first.

and yes my final product is very tasty, intoxicating, and refreshing. i am a member of a homegrewers club, one member who was a cellar master at a midsized brewery, which has helped me learn alot about brewing techniques as well as the various beer styles of the world. we meet once a month and everyone brings some homebrew and we taste and discuss them, taste them some more, occasionally we go to various brewerys for (preferably with restaurants attached) for dinners and tours, and also have contests. this year the hop production is very low, luckily a couple of the guys in the club grow hops at home.
