So I went over to Yahoo to check some email accounts and I find this on their home page listed in their Pseudo-news.
Eventhough when you read it you reailze that nothing is being said but the headline alone will have the uninitiated and not so smart lumping us in with child molesters and suicide bombers.

Marijuana may increase psychosis risk

By MARIA CHENG, AP Medical Writer Thu Jul 26, 7:25 PM ET

LONDON - Using marijuana seems to increase the chance of becoming psychotic, researchers report in an analysis of past research that reignites the issue of whether pot is dangerous.

The new review suggests that even infrequent use could raise the small but real risk of this serious mental illness by 40 percent.

Doctors have long suspected a connection and say the latest findings underline the need to highlight marijuana's long-term risks. The research, paid for by the British Health Department, is being published Friday in medical journal The Lancet.

"The available evidence now suggests that cannabis is not as harmless as many people think," said Dr. Stanley Zammit, one of the study's authors and a lecturer in the department of psychological medicine at Cardiff University.

The researchers said they couldn't prove that marijuana use itself increases the risk of psychosis, a category of several disorders with schizophrenia being the most commonly known.

There could be something else about marijuana users, "like their tendency to use other drugs or certain personality traits, that could be causing the psychoses," Zammit said.

Marijuana is the most frequently used illegal substance in many countries, including the United Kingdom and the United States. About 20 percent of young adults report using it at least once a week, according to government statistics.

Zammit and colleagues from the University of Bristol, Imperial College and Cambridge University examined 35 studies that tracked tens of thousands of people for periods ranging from one year to 27 years to examine the effect of marijuana on mental health.

They looked for psychotic illnesses as well as cognitive disorders including delusions and hallucinations, bipolar disorder, depression, anxiety, neuroses and suicidal tendencies.

They found that people who used marijuana had roughly a 40 percent higher chance of developing a psychotic disorder later in life. The overall risk remains very low.

For example, Zammit said the risk of developing schizophrenia for most people is less than 1 percent. The prevalence of schizophrenia is believed to be about five in 1,000 people. But because of the drug's wide popularity, the researchers estimate that about 800 new cases of psychosis could be prevented by reducing marijuana use.

The scientists found a more disturbing outlook for "heavy users" of pot, those who used it daily or weekly: Their risk for psychosis jumped to a range of 50 percent to 200 percent.

One doctor noted that people with a history of mental illness in their families could be at higher risk. For them, marijuana use "could unmask the underlying schizophrenia," said Dr. Deepak Cyril D'Souza, an associate professor of psychiatry at Yale University, who was not involved in the study.

Dr. Wilson Compton, a senior scientist at the National Institute on Drug Abuse in Washington, called the study persuasive.

"The strongest case is that there are consistencies across all of the studies," and that the link was seen only with psychoses — not anxiety, depression or other mental health problems, he said.

Scientists cannot rule out that pre-existing conditions could have led to both marijuana use and later psychoses, he added.

Scientists think it is biologically possible that marijuana could cause psychoses because it interrupts important neurotransmitters such as dopamine. That can interfere with the brain's communication systems.

Some experts say governments should now work to dispel the misconception that marijuana is a benign drug.

"We've reached the end of the road with these kinds of studies," said Dr. Robin Murray of King's College, who had no role in the Lancet study. "Experts are now agreed on the connection between cannabis and psychoses. What we need now is for 14-year-olds to know it."

In the U.K., the government will soon reconsider how marijuana should be classified in its hierarchy of drugs. In 2004, it was downgraded and penalties for possession were reduced. Many expect marijuana will be bumped up to a class "B" category, with offenses likely to lead to arrests or longer jail sentences.

Two of the authors of the study were invited experts on the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs Cannabis Review in 2005. Several authors reported being paid to attend drug company-sponsored meetings related to marijuana, and one received consulting fees from companies that make antipsychotic medications.

Can't believe the Lancet would actually consent to publish this garbage. "The researchers said they couldn't prove that marijuana use itself increases the risk of psychosis" - but hey, let's publish this saying it does, anyway. Rehashing old junk science doesn't make it better.

All they found is that people with latent psychological disorders are 40% more likely to use cannabis... And the Govt. propaganda machine spins it into this bullshit...

The shame of it is that good people who don't know much about cannabis are slowly being convinced that it is worse than crack.
Meanwhile their children are being feed all sorts of Pharms for everything from Acne to ADD,which when I was a kid was known as TOO MUCH EFFING SUGAR.

this is ridiculous...i smoke pot everyday and i'm way more likely to be psychotic if i'm not toking...somewhat unfortunately the fact of the matter is that there IS a certain segment of the population that shouldn't smoke pot b/c of what they are saying in this study...i've smoked pot with a ton of people and there have been a few (lets say 10-20) who, after getting somewhat high, experience what i can best describe as a low-level 'ego-fracture'...anybody who has read the mckenna's works knows what i'm talking about...

now in my opinion (and i have a degree in a relevant field) these are simply people who are predisposed to mental illness and pot is only one of many substances or situations which is able to elicit problematic personality traits which have a tendency to sit below the surface of many people's psychological makeup...i have refused pot to these types of folks once i see how they act and will continue to do so...to me its sort of like people who drink but shouldn't, its no fun for them or anyone around them...

to me the study is very incomplete...why limit such observations to pot if they had these people in the study for 25 years? i find it difficult to believe that all of the problems of the people who went nuts was b/c they were smoking pot...as if they didn't drink alcohol, use other drugs or have other interpersonal issues going on in their lives...or perhaps was the level of psychosis from MJ use not as intense as psychosis brought about by alcohol or cocaine use? i'm betting it wasn't...anyhow i hope the stupid fucks who authored this skewed study have occasion to take a big cock ball deep in their asses sometime in the future, against their will...maybe that could be another trigger for psychoses, lol...

Hey Nugz great points. I am an avid supporter of McKenna since meeting him at a lecture at ColumbiA U. years ago. Oddly enough the lecture was about Quarks and black holes. Somewhere around here I have a few old cassette tapes of some of his own lectures. very ineeresting and entertaining.
My favorite quote of his (when discussing the world conscience and the use of Peyote)'
" There's Some One in there and they want to talk to us."

Yeah Brother I've been toking since '76 and if anything weed has mellowed me out. It gave me the time and focus to look inward and dump what was undesirable. I have two acquaintances diagnosed as Schizophrenic and they both claim that smoking weed on a moderate basis helps them maintain and function more or less in society. Their doctors agree with them and help them maintain a balance between the Pharms they must take to stay stable and the weed they smoke to help cope.

Why all this hatred aimed at weed?
Any thoughts everybody?

Sigh... :fsu:

I may not have a degree in psych but I have worked with statics in several classes and these two setences totally point to the underlying bullshit canned in this trash study.

They used information gathered by other studies, another shaky and relatively incocnclusive way of using already focused and biased data. Plus it all rests on the honesty of the people used in the main data set and I'm compelled to point out that someone has to assess the psychoses or mental irregularity to include it in the study...fishy at best.

It doesn't state the degree of psychoses, almost 100% of the population is sticken with a very minute level of some sort og mental irregularity, any of the quacks that get psych degrees can argue to a point that you have this or that, take fingernail bitting...they could argue you are neurotic etc.

We have a local french radio celebrity that argues that doing pot in the 60's was less damaging to mental health because the pot today in breede to be much more potent...*cough**cough*bullshit*cough**cough*.
It just means you need less of the same drug to get the same result, I mention this because this is the interpretive aspect of dealing with conditions of the mind, to one Dr you are fatigued and to another you have depression, to another you have OCD and to another your overly neat.

this was the final thing that made me feel good about toking daily..

And the business wheel keeps turning, what a surprise that people payed to be somewhere are feeling inclined to agree with the study..if only hypocrits could be locked up in a mental institution :rasta:

dude the pharmaceutical companies hate the fact that something so effective with virtually no side effects wasn't made in one of their laboratories and they can't make a ton of dough on it :badday:

It threatens many business interests, from Big Pharma to Big Oil to Big Booze to the cotton growers to the corn growers. There isn't hardly an industry it won't affect, and they all have lobbyists.

The inertia of Big Business loathe to change, lest it affect their profits, is what will be the downfall of our civilization - like big stupid dinosaurs, caught in the tar, too big to get out, too slow to change quick enough.....

Besides, meth and crack makes you stupid, easy to control, easy to imprison. A fascist government's wet dream. Weed makes you think, reflect, search for new ways and this scares the shit out of the authoritarians pulling our strings.

Gotta love circular logic: Bust a kid with pot, give him the choice of jail or rehab, of course they all take rehab, then point to the numbers of how many people are in rehab for weed. See how it works? No one ever asked if they need to be in rehab. That's some sneaky shit in the drug warrior's arsenal.

Valid point Heady Pete and i never looked at it that way. But you nailed it. Given the choice of rehab or jail fo rpot anyone would take rehab. I know a guy that went to rehab for pot to avoid jail and all the other addicts there made fun of his ass for being there for pot. But it dont mean as you say that they need rehab, they just didnt want to go to jail and took a easier route.

Kind of like saying drug dealers love chopping wood based off of all the dealers that get the choice of jail or bootcamp where they cut logs for 6 months. It dont mean that they want the discipline or work out routine of bootcamp, just means they rather spend 6 months at camp then 5 years in the pen.

I dont even see why people believe a fucking thing the government tells em at this point. The same government that in the 70's and 80's said coke was as bad for you as a candy bar, wasnt addictive at all. The same government that told us there was WMD in Iraq ( when we all knew it was bullshit) and got suckered into spending 10 billion a month for a bullshit scavenger hunt.

Problem comes down to us! Me , you and every single US citizen that has not called bullshit on this government. They say MJ is bad for you, i say prove it! Because the proof is on our side. They say its a gateway drug, i say prove it. More kids have a soda before they are 8 years old so their first drug is caffine revving the lil fuckers up so you can give em riddlin. Bottom line is call bullshit on em. Its our right, fuck that , IT'S OUR DUTY!!! call your congressmen or senator and call em on their bullshit. Write emails everyday to em , show up at their offices, set up protests but god damn it do something. We have the power and always have, we just are too scared to use it. Remember, its a government for the people, by the people. Not a people for the government by the government, despite what they will lead you to believe

Yup, my first drug was either nicotine or a bottle we swiped from a friend's parents stash. Maybe it was the fun sips of booze at family events when I was younger....now I hardly drink, but that heroin monkey is a tough one (kidding).

It's hard to prove something when you have a 50 year moratorium on any mj testing and research, as the US has in place.

Republicans believe it is their god given right to tell you what to do with your life, but don't you dare take a look at theirs.......coward, authoritarian loving sheep......

It certainly is madness. Just a side point. When I was growing up the Government was US, not THEM. People participated, even when a monster like Nixon tried to consolidate power in only three men, hmmm sound familiar?, had to step down by mandate of the people. Don't forget that the present Neo-cons that continue to steal our civil liberties all worked in that administration.
But what happened in between? Did the Summer of Love become the Vehicle of Commerce?
These things are all connected in someway. It makes me psycho.
I better smoke a J...no HASH!

Reagan happened......Republicans aligned with Big Business orchestrating the theft of the US treasury. Who gets more handouts than big bizz? No one. Corporate welfare 24/7.

Same old crooks...Abrams, Wurmser, Scooter....etc.

It is the grand rip off of all time. Neocons are stealing the treasury and giving it to Halliburton. Hello, Haliburton just relocated to UAE or Kuwait or somewhere over in the middle east. Nice fucking traitor company. There is no loyalty to country by a multinational.

Cheney is a neocon and has his hand up the ass of the puppet idiot Bush. This is why they refuse to bring troops home. They are stealing the treasury and stealing the Iraqis' oil. There are no meters and the oil is being trafficked through Kuwait (They owe Bush Sr a debt of gratitude after getting rid of Saddam after they told him to go in and invade Kuwait.) The longer they prolong the chaos, the longer they can steal and give it to their campaign contributing friends in the war profiteering business. All a grand fucking setup - those Bush traitors have been trying to overthrow the gov since grandpa Prescott was around, financing the Nazis. This family needs to be thrown in the Hague for life.

This story is not a brand new story, just the same old recycled news from "The Lancet" and was a response to the overwhelming amount of recent scientific studies on the positive, safe medical uses of Cannabis.....

Leave it to the US media to blast this outrageous story on the front page and blow it way out of proportion as well.....

never mind all the drunk-driving deaths and tobacco cancers, we all now have to fear this psychosis-causing weed, am i right???!?!?!

Once i have thoroughly read the actual study in "The Lancet" (which came out last year by the way), i will show in this thread all the ways that it has been blown out of proportion.....so far i have only read exerpts and general summaries....

:ying: kind regards from guineapig :ying:

Treasury? What treasury? Dubya spent it all. There's nothing left to steal. We went from a record surplus to a record deficit in only 7 years. :badday:
